Rapid test strips have been widely used for mycotoxins detection in foods; however, their application in tea is strictly limited by pronounced matrix interference. In this study, tea-specific cleaning methods were developed to enable rapid detection of aflatoxin B1 (AFB1) and ochratoxin A (OTA) in dark tea and tea infusions. The proposed methods achieved recoveries ranging from 81.5% to 128.07% for AFB1 and ranging from 80.05% to 131.48% for OTA. Method validation demonstrated robust accuracy and precision, with AFB1 recoveries of 83.82%-110.00% (RSDs: 0.46%-12.74%) and OTA recoveries of 82.83

DNA hydrogels have garnered significant attention in biosensing due to their high programmability and excellent biocompatibility. However, the synthesis of their key building block, DNA-polymer, is typically cumbersome, time-consuming, and involves hazardous reagents, which significantly hinders their broader application. Herein, we report a rapid (<1 min) and green synthesis strategy for DNA-polymer via photo-initiated (405 nm) covalent grafting of DNA strands onto gelatin methacryloyl (GelMA). Based on this DNA-polymer, we constructed a light-based DNA hydrogel integrated with a paper substr

Pressed peanut cake (PPC) is a valuable plant protein resource but is highly susceptible to aflatoxin B1 (AFB1) contamination. Its complex matrix can complicate the accurate analysis of AFB1. Digesting the samples in vitro prior to quantification resulted in a significant improvement in AFB1 detection value (25.81-39.40%) compared with untreated samples. Ultrafiltration analysis confirmed that conventional extraction solvents are susceptible to severe interference from the matrix. Molecular docking demonstrated that AFB1 can form complexes with the matrix. Protein hydrolysis leads to significa

Aflatoxin B1 (AFB1) is a highly toxic mycotoxin prevalent in food and feed that poses a grave threat to human and animal health. In this study, an AFB1- degrading strain of Arthrobacter citreus, designated Soilh02, was isolated. Under optimal conditions (37 °C, pH 8.0, 72 h), the presence of Cu2+ significantly enhanced AFB1 degradation, achieving a maximum degradation rate of 93.96%. Ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (UHPLC-QTOF) identified two novel degradation products with molecular formulas C18H 20O7 and C16H14O6, and proposed plausible structures for th

Aflatoxin B1 (AFB1), a potent carcinogenic mycotoxin, poses critical health risks to both animals and humans. Thus, rapid and highly sensitive detection of AFB1 is crucial for ensuring food safety. However, current AFB1 detection methods face a trade-off between laboratory-level sensitivity and on-site immediacy. Instead of relying on absolute fluorescence intensity, this study exploits the UV-triggered addition at the terminal furan double bond of AFB1, which yields a large fluorescence enhancement (ΔF), thereby proposing a novel quantification strategy centered on this photo-induced signal i

Aflatoxin B1 (AFB1), one of the most potent environmental hepatotoxins, exerts its adverse effects through oxidative stress, immune dysregulation, and multiple forms of regulated cell death. However, the upstream molecular mechanisms linking hepatocyte injury to hepatic immune activation remain unclear. In this study, we identified cytidine/uridine monophosphate kinase 2 (CMPK2) as a pivotal regulator of AFB1-induced liver injury. Using AML12 hepatocytes and a chronic AFB1 exposure mouse model, we demonstrated that AFB1 markedly upregulated CMPK2 expression and activated the NLRP3/caspase-1/ga

Aflatoxin B1 (AFB1) is a widespread contaminant of food and feed that poses significant risks to both human and animal health. Developing safe and effective strategies to mitigate its toxicity remains a major public health priority. In this study, we investigated the protective effects of Lactiplantibacillus plantarum SCS7 cell-free extract (CFE) against AFB1-induced liver injury using integrated in vivo (mouse) and in vitro (AML12 hepatocyte) models. CFE treatment markedly alleviated AFB1-induced hepatic damage, mitochondrial dysfunction, and gut microbiota dysbiosis. Mechanistic analyses ind

Aflatoxin B1 (AFB1), a carcinogenic mycotoxin in food and feed, is bio-transformed in the mammalian liver to aflatoxin M1 (AFM1), a potentially toxic metabolite excreted in cow milk. Hence, humans are exposed to AFM1 through dairy consumption. Despite its toxicity, numerous studies continue to report AFM1 occurrence levels (milk-borne concentrations) above the safety limits, indicating persistent exposure risks. A consolidated data set of global AFM1 occurrence levels spanning from 1990 to 2025, coupled with a data driven assessment of trends in AFM1 occurrence and exposure is not available in

Exposure to aflatoxin (AF) triggers the production of inflammatory molecules and free radicals, leading to chronic inflammation, cancer, and neurodegenerative diseases. This systematic review evaluated the effects of AFB1 on the nervous system, particularly focusing on Alzheimer's disease (AD). A comprehensive search was conducted in Scopus, Cochrane Library, PubMed, and Web of Science databases up to 1 June 2024, without restrictions. From 993 records retrieved, 16 articles were included in the systematic review. AFB1 participates in various biochemical processes and pathological conditions.

Aflatoxin B1 (AFB1), a common feed contaminant, causes substantial economic losses in animal husbandry and threatens reproductive health. This study investigated the toxic mechanisms of AFB1 on bovine endometrial epithelial cells using in vitro experiments. Treatment with 5 μg/mL AFB1 for 24 h significantly inhibited cell proliferation and induced apoptosis, indicated by a reduced EdU-positive rate and increased Bax/Bcl-2 ratio and Caspase-3 expression. Transcriptome sequencing identified 810 differentially expressed mRNAs and 88 upregulated lncRNAs, which were primarily enriched in calcium si

Foodborne illness is a major source of the global burden of disease, but public monitoring of hazards in food systems is overwhelmingly focused on the formal sector in high income countries. We contribute to the development of an evidence base on food safety risk in low-income and informal settings by monitoring aflatoxin prevalence in maize flour in Kenya. Aflatoxin is a contaminant which causes liver cancer and has been linked to childhood stunting. We carry out systematic monitoring of formally and informally processed maize flour from a range of retail vendors across ten urban sites in Ken

The presence of mycotoxins in cheese is a significant concern due to their potential health risks. Mycotoxins can contaminate cheese through two main routes: indirectly via contaminated animal feed, and/or directly, because of mold growth on dairy products. It has been reported that cheese may contain metabolites of aflatoxin B1 such as aflatoxin M1 (AFM1), aflatoxicol (AFL), and, its precursor, sterigmatocystin (STC). This study presents a reliable method for the simultaneous determination of AFM1, AFL, and STC in cheeses made from ovine, goat, or buffalo milk. The method was developed using

Aflatoxin B1 (AFB1) is a potent mycotoxin that poses significant risks to food safety, public health, and livestock production. Taurochenodeoxycholic acid (TCDCA), a bioactive bile acid, exhibits hepatoprotective and intestinal barrier-modulating potential; however, its role in mitigating AFB1 toxicity remains unclear. This study employed a broiler model to evaluate the protective effects of TCDCA against AFB1-induced hepatic and intestinal injury. The results demonstrated that TCDCA treatment significantly improved growth performance impaired by AFB1 exposure. TCDCA alleviated hepatic lesions

A disposable graphite pencil electrode (GPE)-based electrochemical biosensor for the detection of aflatoxin B1 (AFB1) in milk samples is presented. The biosensor surface was functionalized with a ternary nanocomposite comprising graphene oxide nanoribbons (GONRs), MXene (Ti₃C₂Tx), and silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs). The ternary nanocomposite-modified GPE surface was further modified with a functional molecule (polyethylene glycol, PEG) to enhance biocompatibility and facilitate antibody immobilization. The resulting biosensor, anti-AFB1/PEG/Ag@GONRs/MXene/GPE, exhibited high sensitivity toward

Aflatoxin B1 (AFB1) has strong carcinogenicity, mutagenicity, and teratogenicity even at low concentrations, presenting a major risk to food safety and human health, hence, it is crucial to develop a sensitive detection technique for AFB1. Consequently, cadmium telluride (CdTe) quantum dots conjugated with AFB1 aptamers serve as fluorescent signal probes, whereas Fe3O4@UiO-66-NH2 nanocomplexes are employed as magnetic carriers and fluorescence quenchers. Fe3O4@UiO-66-NH2 reduces background signal interference, thereby enhancing detection sensitivity and Förster Resonance Energy Transfer (FRET)

Aflatoxin B1 (AFB1) and Ochratoxin A (OTA) are two of the most potent mycotoxins, recognized for their severe toxicity. In recent years, the consumption of bioactive substances has proven to be a valuable ally in combating their harmful effects on human health. For this purpose, this study evaluates the protective effects of fermented whey (FW) and pumpkin (P), as functional ingredients in bread, on duodenum tissue against sub-chronic toxicity induced by AFB1 and OTA. Nine groups of male and female Wistar rats (n = 5 per sex/group) were exposed to different combinations of AFB1, OTA, FW, and P

The seeds of lotus (Nelumbo nucifera Gaertn.) have been used as significant medicinal and nutritional ingredients worldwide. The abundant proteins and polysaccharides in lotus seeds make them susceptible to contamination by aflatoxin (AF), a fungal toxic metabolite. This study was conducted to investigate the susceptibility of lotus seeds at different stages of ripening to AF contamination, as well as the mechanism of the contamination. Seven groups of lotus receptacles with seeds at different ripening stages (A-G, from immature to mature) were used for the experiment. Spores of Aspergillus fl
