BACKGROUND: Many signs of spatial dysgraphia and drawing errors after right hemispheric stroke (RHS) have been attributed to spatial neglect or impaired sensory feedback. Counterclockwise (contralesional) tilts of graphomotor productions remained to be explained.
OBJECTIVE: To test whether graphomotor tilts stem from a tilted representation of verticality transposed to the top/bottom axis of the sheet of paper, using data from the DOBRAS cohort.
METHODS: Handwriting and drawing orientations were measured from the writing of 3 lines and the drawing of the Gainotti Figure (house roof lines). V

Micrographia is a rare neurological finding in isolation. Most cases of isolated micrographia have been found in association with focal ischemia of the left basal ganglia. Here, we present a case of post-traumatic micrographia stemming from contusion to the left basal ganglia.

In this study, we explored the potential of two forms of discussion (disciplinary vs. traditional) for 39 sixth- and seventh-grade students with or at risk for learning disabilities (LD), before writing historical arguments. Nine teachers who led small group discussions in six heterogeneous social studies classrooms implemented the intervention. Students who were involved in disciplinary discussions ( n = 19) scored statistically higher than their peers who engaged in traditional discussions ( n = 20) on a measure of historical knowledge (partial η2 = .23); they also wrote essays with better p

The purpose of this study was to investigate whether preschool children with language impairments (LI), a group with documented reading difficulties, also experience writing difficulties. In addition, a purpose was to examine if the writing outcomes differed when children had concomitant cognitive deficits in addition to oral language problems. A group of 293 preschool children were administered an assessment battery that included measures to examine oral language, nonverbal cognition, emergent reading, and writing. Children were divided into four groups based on their language and cognitive p

In addition to various lexical errors, the writing of patients with deep dysgraphia may include a large number of segmental spelling errors, which increase towards the end of the word. Frequently, these errors involve deletion of two or more letters resulting in so-called "fragment errors". Different positions have been brought forward regarding their origin, including rapid decay of activation in the graphemic buffer and an impairment of more central (i.e., lexical or semantic) processing. We present data from a patient (M.D.) with deep dysgraphia who showed an increase of segmental spelling

A young female secretary developed a writing disorder, exclusively expressed when using a word processor, following an ischemic vascular event involving the insula and the right posterior parietal region. There was no disturbance of laterality. The neurological examination, completed by neuropsychological tests eliminated any persistent phasic or gnostic disorders. The analysis of the text produced revealed abnormalities leading to the conclusion that the left hand was responsible for all the errors observed. A sensorimotor integration disorder produced a melokinetic apraxia which appeared to

Dyslexia is a primary development disorder characterized by reading and writing disability. Although frequent, it remains underdetected at school and badly known by practitioners. As a consequence, many children remain severely handicapped in their school life, and later on in their adult social life, although being fairly intelligent. Pediatricians must be involved in its early detection and management. ERTL4 test is a useful test of detection to be applied in 5-7-year-old children.

Diagnostic and therapeutic difficulties are described in a case or oral apraxia in a 16-year-old girl who had numerous skull vault bone with concussion and crushing of cerebral tissue. The authors point out that the process of rehabilitaiton of speech disturbances in oral apraxia is long and complex.

Lesions of the corpus callosum have the potential to interfere with a neurologically impaired individual's ability to function in day-to-day activities, since the corpus callosum is important for a number of higher-order activities that involve information transfer between the left and right hemispheres. Even in normal individuals, callosal lesions may lead to apraxia, agraphia, and even an alien hand syndrome whereby the person is unable to control the actions of a hand. It is easy to envisage that callosal damage could compound cognitive symptoms in individuals with dementia. However, despit…

Similarly, the association of acalculia with finger anomia and agraphia with right-left disorientation may have specific implications in the neuropsychologic processing of the evolution of calculation and writing. The impact of visual cognition and memory mechanisms on the acquisition of foundational literacy skills have widely been highlighted in the literature. Visual complexity (VC) and frequency of graphemes (FG) vary across orthographies. The alphasyllabary writing system of the Amharic language has a large grapheme size and several particular linguistic and visuo-perceptual features. This study examines the effects of visual complexity and frequency of the Amharic graphemes on grapheme identification and handwriting legibility skills in typically-developing children in order to draw implications f

Research on the relationship between sluggish cognitive tempo (SCT) and scores on neuropsychological tests (such as those measuring processing speed and reaction time) is inconclusive, and the association between SCT and motor incoordination and dysgraphia has not been objectively investigated. Mothers of 413 elementary school children (6-12 years of age) rated their children on the Pediatric Behavior Scale (PBS), which yields psychological problem scores, including SCT. Children were administered an extensive battery of neuropsychological tests assessing processing and performance speed, work

PURPOSE: Learning disabilities or learning disorders are umbrella terms used for wide variety of learning problems like Dyslexia, Dyscalculia, Dysgraphia, and Dyspraxia. These disabilities are due to the neurological disorders which affects brain functions. Early diagnosis of these disabilities in kids from age 3 to 6 will help to start early medical treatments and get them back to the normal condition.
MATERIAL AND METHOD: we developed a software-based Learning Disability Evaluation Kit called YALU with computer Game Modules for kids targeting their learning disabilities. These Computer game

The task of recognition of oral spelling (stimulus: "C-A-T", response: "cat") is often administered to individuals with acquired written language disorders, yet there is no consensus about the underlying cognitive processes. We adjudicate between two existing hypotheses: Recognition of oral spelling uses central reading processes, or recognition of oral spelling uses central spelling processes in reverse. We tested the recognition of oral spelling and spelling to dictation abilities of a single individual with acquired dyslexia and dysgraphia. She was impaired relative to matched controls in s

A primary goal of working memory research has been to understand the mechanisms that permit working memory systems to effectively maintain the identity and order of the elements held in memory for sufficient time as to allow for their selection and transfer to subsequent processing stages. Based on the performance of two individuals with acquired dysgraphia affecting orthographic working memory (WM; the graphemic buffer), we present evidence of two distinct and dissociable functions of orthographic WM. One function is responsible for maintaining the temporal stability of letters held in orthog

This study directly compared four patients who, to varying degrees, showed the characteristics of deep dyslexia, dysphasia and/or dysgraphia--i.e., they made semantic errors in oral reading, repetition and/or spelling to dictation. The "primary systems" hypothesis proposes that these different conditions result from severe impairment to a common phonological system, rather than damage to task-specific mechanisms (i.e. grapheme-phoneme conversion). By this view, deep dyslexic/dysphasic patients should show overlapping deficits but previous studies have not directly compared them. All four patie

Gender differences in mean level of reading and writing skills were examined in 122 children (80 boys and 42 girls) and 200 adults (115 fathers and 85 mothers) who showed behavioral markers of dyslexia in a family genetics study. Gender differences were found in writing and replicated prior results for typically developing children: Boys and men were more impaired in handwriting and composing than were girls and women, but men, who were more impaired in those writing skills, were also more impaired in spelling than women. Men were more impaired than women in accuracy and rate of reading passag

In Germany the dD by Feldmann is a frequently used test in child assessment. Unknown, however, is the validity of the dD in the assessment of children with specific developmental language disorders. The dD by Feldmann are pairs of three-syllable content words which are presented dichotically. In this controlled cross-sectional study 65 children took the dichotic listening test by Feldmann (dD). The experimental group comprised 34 children with developmental reading and spelling disorders. The control group comprised 31 children with normal reading and spelling development.
