Wiggle and glide: fine-scale telemetry reveals unique diving strategies in benthic-foraging sea snakes.

BACKGROUND: The efficient acquisition of two critical but spatially separated resources -food and oxygen- governs the daily movements and diving patterns of air-breathing aquatic animals. Unlike pinnipeds, turtles and seabirds, fully marine ('true') sea snakes spend their entire lifecycle at sea and have evolved specialised movement behaviours. However, fine-scale data on the diving behaviour of free-ranging sea snakes remain scarce, limiting our understanding of their ecology and vulnerability to anthropogenic threats. METHODS: We used acoustic telemetry to track five individuals of two bent

Caecal faecolith, a cause of acute appendicitis.

A 60-year-old woman presented to the accident and emergency department with a 3-day history of lower abdominal pain, which was sudden in onset, localised to the right iliac fossa, constant and aggravated by movements. On examination, she was febrile (100 · F), tachycardic and normotensive. Examination of the abdomen revealed an ill-defined tender mass in the right iliac fossa. A clinical diagnosis of appendicular mass was made and treated conservatively. After a few days the mass became smaller, firmer, mobile and non-tender. Since the mass persisted, the patient was investigated further to ru

Fomite transmission in head lice.

Control of various infestations requires an accurate understanding of transmission. After thousands of years of lice infestation, scientific documentation of indirect contact transmission has been substantiated. Lice can be transferred in the egg, instar, and adult stages. Lice have now been shown in the laboratory to be readily dislodged by air movements such as blow-drying one's hair, combing, and toweling. Moreover, passive transfer to adjoining fabric is also frequently observed. Louse transmission by fomites occurs more frequently than has been commonly believed. Close proximity suffices …

Tracking hazardous air pollutants from a refinery fire by applying on-line and off-line air monitoring and back trajectory modeling.

The air monitors used by most regulatory authorities are designed to track the daily emissions of conventional pollutants and are not well suited for measuring hazardous air pollutants that are released from accidents such as refinery fires. By applying a wide variety of air-monitoring systems, including on-line Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, gas chromatography with a flame ionization detector, and off-line gas chromatography-mass spectrometry for measuring hazardous air pollutants during and after a fire at a petrochemical complex in central Taiwan on May 12, 2011, we were able to d

Three-dimensional modeling of air flow and pollutant dispersion in an urban street canyon with thermal effects.

Effects of excess ground and building temperatures on airflow and dispersion of pollutants in an urban street canyon with an aspect ratio of 0.8 and a length-to-width ratio of 3 were investigated numerically. Three-dimensional governing equations of mass, momentum, energy, and species were modeled using the RNG k-epsilon turbulence model and Boussinesq approximation, which were solved using the finite volume method. Vehicle emissions were estimated from the measured traffic flow rates and modeled as banded line sources, with a street length and bandwidths equal to typical vehicle widths. Both

Smoke exposure exacerbates an ethanol-induced defect in mucociliary clearance of Streptococcus pneumoniae.

BACKGROUND: Alcoholics and smokers are particularly susceptible to pulmonary infections caused by Streptococcus pneumoniae, the pneumococcus. Infection begins when pneumococci colonizing the nasopharynx are aspirated into the lower respiratory tract. The major host defense against this movement is the mucociliary clearance apparatus. Both cigarette smoke and ethanol (EtOH) exposure alter ciliary beating and protein kinase activity in the respiratory mucosa in vitro, but their effects on bacterial clearance in the intact animal have not been determined. METHODS: Male Sprague Dawley rats were e

The Use of Chest Seals in Treating Sucking Chest Wounds: A Comparison of Existing Evidence and Guideline Recommendations.

INTRODUCTION: Sucking chest wounds occur when injuries penetrate the thorax and inhalation results in air entering the pleural cavity. Well documented in the prehospital environment, treatment should be chest seal application to attempt prevention of an expanding pneumothorax. However, a seal might occlude the pathway for the escape of air and lead to a worsening tension pneumothorax. METHODS: The author conducted a literature search of studies reporting the efficacy of various chest seals for treating sucking chest wounds and the prevention of a tension pneumothorax. Study results were compa

What goes up must come down: biomechanical impact analysis of falling locusts.

Many insects are able to precisely control their jumping movements. Once in the air, the properties of the actual landing site, however, are almost impossible to predict. Falling insects thus have to cope with the situation at impact. In particular, for insects jumping to escape predators, a controlled landing movement appears to be a major evolutionary advantage. A quick recovery into an upright and stable body posture minimizes the time to prepare for the next escape jump. In this study, we used high-speed recordings to investigate the falling and in particular the impact behavior of Schisto

Evolution of Sound Source Localization Circuits in the Nonmammalian Vertebrate Brainstem.

The earliest vertebrate ears likely subserved a gravistatic function for orientation in the aquatic environment. However, in addition to detecting acceleration created by the animal's own movements, the otolithic end organs that detect linear acceleration would have responded to particle movement created by external sources. The potential to identify and localize these external sources may have been a major selection force in the evolution of the early vertebrate ear and in the processing of sound in the central nervous system. The intrinsic physiological polarization of sensory hair cells on

Dynamic three-dimensional printing: The future of bronchoscopic simulation training?

High-fidelity models are required for technical mastery of bronchoscopic procedures in the fields of anaesthesia, intensive care, surgery and respiratory medicine. Our group has created a three-dimensional (3D) airway model prototype to emulate physiological and pathological movement. Developed from the concepts of our previously described 3D printed paediatric trachea for airway management training, this model produces movements created by injection of air or saline through a side Luer Lock port. The anaesthesia and intensive care applications of the model could include bronchoscopic navigati

Thunder storm mortality: Issues of medicolegal concern.

Thunderstorms refer to atmospheric disturbances that are associated with electrical discharges in the form of lightning, with acoustic effects from thunder. They involve the rapid upward movement of warm, moist air which then cools and condenses creating typical cumulonimbus clouds with precipitation. Thunderstorms range in severity but are usually associated with heavy rains, winds and sometimes sleet, hail and snow. If the intensity of a storm increases there may be tornadoes or cyclones. In cases with lightning strikes and minimal or no rain there is an associated risk for the development o

Soft robotics-inspired sensing system for detecting downward movement and pistoning in prosthetic sockets: A proof-of-concept study.

BACKGROUND: Vertical displacement of the residual limb within transtibial prosthetic socket, often known as "pistoning" or downward movement, may lead to skin breakdowns and ulcers. Downward movement is particularly difficult to self-manage for diabetic individuals living with amputation because of diminished sensation in the residual limb from peripheral neuropathy. Therefore, a customizable sensor at the distal end that can alert the users when high-risk downward movement and pistoning occurs is urgently needed. OBJECTIVES: Presented herein for the first time is a lightweight, inexpensive s

Biomechanics of stapesplasty: a review.

OBJECTIVE: The replacement of an otosclerotic fixed stapes by a prosthesis significantly modifies the function of the normal ossicular chain. Because the ear works as a pressure receptor, a piston prosthesis will both modify the sound pressure transmission and respond to the ambient air pressure changes in a different way than the normal stapes. Both aspects, the acoustic transmission and the displacements of the prosthesis with variations of atmospheric pressures, are reviewed. CONCLUSION: The diameter of a piston should not be smaller than 0.4 mm and it should be inserted into a significant

The effect of long term ventilatory support on hemodynamics in children with spinal muscle atrophy (SMA) type II.

BACKGROUND: Bi-level Positive Airway Pressure (Bi-PAP) treatment improves breathing efficiency and ventilation in children with SMA type II, but the effects of positive airway pressure swings on heart rate (HR) and blood pressure are not known. Here we studied children with SMA to determine whether Bi-PAP administered during sleep is associated with changes in hemodynamics. METHODS: Ten children aged 8-12 years on long term Bi-PAP therapy were evaluated during a routine overnight sleep study. We recorded HR, ECG, thoraco-abdominal movements and blood gases. Blood pressure was estimated indire

[Mucociliary drainage of the respiratory tract].

Mechanical cleansing of the airways is related, on the one hand, to the amount and physicochemical qualities of the mucus and, secondly, to ciliary activity. Mobilisation of mucus is ensured by polarisation and coordination of ciliary movements. The speed of the mucosal "conveyor belt" depends, amongst other things, on th frequency of ciliary beating movements. The latter may be modified by various physiological factors including temperature, carbon dioxide, cations, pH, certain chemical mediators, in particular acetylcholine, but also by numerous harmful agents present in the air, such as irr

Cranial tumors in aged cattle causing Horner's syndrome and exophthalmos.

An 11-year-old Jersey cow and a 9-year-old Holstein cow were examined for complaints of progressive exophthalmos. Additionally, signs of unilateral Horner's syndrome and reduced air movement through the nasal passages on the affected side were observed. In both cases, a poor prognosis was given due to suspected neoplasia. At 2 and 6 months, respectively, after initial examination, these cows were killed and post mortem examinations of the affected tissues were performed. The diagnosis for the Jersey was sclerosing respiratory epithelial adenocarcinoma and for the Holstein was squamous cell car
