Changes in muscle sympathetic nerve activity and effect of breathing maneuvers during microgravity induced by parabolic flight in humans.

UNLABELLED: This study aimed to clarify how muscle sympathetic nerve activity (MSNA) in humans, which plays an important role in blood pressure control against gravity, is altered under microgravity (microG) conditions, and how the MSNA change is modified by breathing maneuvers. Ten subjects seated themselves in a jet aircraft with their knees extended. MSNA was recorded microneurographically from the left tibial nerve with simultaneous monitoring of ECG, blood pressure, respiration, and intrathoracic blood volume estimated by the impedance method during parabolic flight in a jet aircraft. In …

Disorientation of animals in microgravity.

Disorientation responses of animals exposed to microgravity produced by parabolic aircraft flights and also in-space experiments were reviewed. Disoriented postures in floating are largely species-dependent. Reflexive lowered tone of gravity-bearing extensor muscles by labyrinthectomy is not seen in mammals (hamster and monkey) and frog, though dorsiflexion of the neck and the trunk is not so remarkable in hamster and monkey as in frog. In weightlessness, fundamental vestibular reflexes may be affected (righting reflex in cat), but coordinated performance can be easily compensated by visual fu…

Infection Prevention Performance among In-Flight Cabin Crew in South Korea.

COVID-19 was declared a worldwide pandemic in 2020; thus, preventing in-flight infection transmission is important for stopping global spread via air travel. Infection prevention (IP) performance among aircraft cabin crew is crucial for preventing in-flight transmission. We aimed to identify the level of IP performance and factors affecting IP performance among aircraft cabin crew during the COVID-19 pandemic in South Korea. An online survey was conducted with 177 cabin crew members between August and September 2020. The survey assessed IP performance, and IP awareness, using a five-point Like…

Acoustical, sensory, and psychological research data and procedures for their use in predicting effects of environmental noises.

A demonstration field-research study reveals that aircraft noise measured at two one-story houses is approximately 9 dB less attenuated from measured outdoor levels than is street traffic noise, and, found in other studies, approximately 14 dB less than railway noise. Comparable differences are found between these noises from the application of basic acoustical formulas for quantifying attenuations that occur on site of one- and two-story houses. Reasonably consistent with those findings are results from attitude surveys showing that daily exposure levels of aircraft must be approximately 8 dB…

[Arthrotic manifestations secondary to repeated microtrauma in helicopter personnel].

Following aetiopathogenetic and anatomopathological examination of arthrosis, chronic microtraumatism, often below the threshold of subjective perception, is indicated as a component, aggravating factor in the disease. During flight, especially if the aircraft is a helicopter, these microtraumas (triggered by the varied motions of the craft and its vibrations) operate continually on joints and muscles and so, along with other factors of anatomical and biochemical nature, cause an aggravation to arthrosis in flying personnel, particularly in the vertebral tract.

A Newly Developed Tolles-Lawson Compensation Model Accounting for Eddy-Current Dynamic Response.

Aeromagnetic compensation mitigates the aircraft-induced magnetic interference in airborne magnetometer measurements, thereby providing the measurement accuracy required by geomagnetic navigation and aeromagnetic surveying. The most widely used compensation framework, the conventional Tolles-Lawson (T-L) model, approximates the eddy-current magnetic field as an instantaneous linear response to the rate of change of the external magnetic field. Our analysis demonstrates that this assumption becomes invalid when the structural characteristic time scale is comparable to the aircraft maneuver time…

Among the cases, 7 individuals had previously worked onboard aircraft. RESULTS: Adjusted results indicated a positive association between working onboard aircraft and the risk of prostate cancer (OR = 3.42, 95% CI: 1.28-9.11). The risk was even more pronounced among individuals working as pilots. CONCLUSIONS: The fi …

An empirically grounded agent based model for modeling directs, conflict detection and resolution operations in air traffic management.

We present an agent based model of the Air Traffic Management socio-technical complex system aiming at modeling the interactions between aircraft and air traffic controllers at a tactical level. The core of the model is given by the conflict detection and resolution module and by the directs module. Directs are flight shortcuts that are given by air controllers to speed up the passage of an aircraft within a certain airspace and therefore to facilitate airline operations. Conflicts between flight trajectories can occur for two main reasons: either the planning of the flight trajectory was not …

Occupational exposure to noise and hypertension in pilots.

The role of occupational exposure to noise as a hypertension risk factor has not been established sufficiently. The aim of the study is to evaluate whether chronic exposure to different levels of noise in two groups of pilots, operating with two types of aircraft, could be a risk for hypertension, what relevance the parameters (intensity, duration and type) of exposure can have and, lastly, whether there are any links between hearing impairment and hypertension. After excluding pilots with confounding factors, a study was made of 77 male pilots of turboprop planes (group A) and 224 male pilots…

F-16 Class A mishaps in the U.S. Air Force, 1975-93.

All USAF F-16 fighter Class A (major) aircraft mishaps from 1975-93 were analyzed, using records from the U.S. Air Force Safety Agency (AFSA). There were 190 Class A mishaps involving 204 F-16's and 217 aircrew during this 19-yr period. The overall Class A rate was 5.09 per 100,000 flight hours, more than double the overall USAF rate. The mishaps are categorized by year, month, time of day and model of aircraft in relation to mishap causes as determined and reported by AFSA. Formation position, phase of flight and primary cause of the mishap indicate that maneuvering, cruise and low-level phas…

The controller, aviation medicine and air safety.

Aviation medicine has researched many important facts on pilots, but little on direct relationships between controllers, aviation medicine and air safety. The unsuspecting flying public accepts a 'blind faith' in aircraft and pilots, unaware that aircraft are controlled within 'suspect' ATC systems. The deceptive simplicity of controlling air traffic in apparently limitless skies belies the complexity of man-machine ATC systems operated in ever-crowded airspace, sometimes with antiquated equipment and indifferent communications. The indivisible operational controller/pilot team strives to meet…

Combined Pulmonary Fibrosis and Emphysema in a Patient With Chronic Occupational Exposure to Trichloroethylene.

Combined pulmonary fibrosis and emphysema (CPFE) is a clinical syndrome of upper-zone-predominant emphysema on high-resolution CT and a peripheral and basal-predominant diffuse pulmonary fibrosis. Multiple occupational and inhalational exposures have been associated with CPFE. We describe a U.S. veteran, who developed CPFE after a prolonged, intense exposure to trichloroethylene as an aircraft maintenance worker. We believe that this may be another example of occupational-associated CPFE.

Dexmedetomidine Utilization During Air Medical Transport for Agitated Patients.

Fixed Wing Air Ambulance providers routinely transport patients agitated from traumatic brain injury sequelae across long distances in a unique environment. The current paradigm limits options available to air medical clinicians to those routinely found on ground based, short distance vehicles, plus whatever a sending facility might be willing to provide. We postulate that dexmedetomidine offers a safe, effective alternative to improve patient care and enhance the safe operation of aircraft.

Spectroscopic detection of stratospheric hydrogen cyanide.

A number of features have been identified as absorption lines of hydrogen cyanide in infrared spectra of stratospheric absorption obtained from a high-altitude aircraft. Column amounts of stratospheric hydrogen cyanide have been derived from spectra recorded on eight flights. The average vertical column amount above 12 kilometers is 7.1 +/- 0.8 x 10(14) molecules per square centimeter, corresponding to an average mixing ratio of 170 parts per trillion by volume.

Prescribing spectacles for aviators: USAF experience.

This special report was written for USAF vision specialists to use as a guide when prescribing spectacles for military aviators and to extend to the civilian sector the knowledge gained from the USAF experience. Visual correction in aviators presents some unique problems, especially for presbyopes. The demands of each individual aircraft environment need to be well understood. Ophthalmologists and optometrists must consider all pertinent aeromedical factors before prescribing spectacles for ametropic aviators.

A case of left hypoglossal neurapraxia following G exposure in a centrifuge.

Isolated hypoglossal (XIIth cranial nerve) neurapraxia is a rare clinical presentation. We present a case of an isolated hypoglossal neurapraxia following exposure to +7.2 Gz in a human centrifuge. Although a variety of cervical spine injuries have been reported as a result of G exposure in an aircraft, no cranial nerve injuries have been reported. A review of the literature of isolated hypoglossal neurapraxia is presented with discussion of the probable cause of this nerve injury.

Testing the Emergency Evacuation Hyperbaric Stretcher for Fit in Small Military and Civilian Helicopters.

INTRODUCTION: Hyperbaric oxygen (HBO2) therapy is essential for the treatment of diving injuries in the field, but typically requires larger recompression chambers with limited porta-bility. The Emergency evacuation hyperbaric stretcher (EEHS) offers a portable solution for prehospital HBO2, particularly in remote or austere environments. However, it's compatibility with smaller evacuation aircraft remains uncertain. METHODS: A commercially available EEHS (Hyperlite 1) was tested for fit and operational computability in both a U.S. Coast Guard Air-bus MH-65 "Dolphin" and an Airbus H145 helico…

Computer simulation of human body dynamics.

Understanding human body dynamics is important in many situations, such as automobile and aircraft crashes, aircraft ejections, falls, and other acceleration environments. The design of automobile interiors, cockpits, and safety equipment requires knowledge of the forces and accelerations encountered during an emergency. Because of the limited information available from actual events and the various constraints in testing, computer simulations are often the only means of obtaining detailed information. The Armstrong Laboratory (AL) developed the Articulated Total Body (ATB) model to predict th…
