OBJECTIVE: To describe the appearance and frequency of skeletal abnormalities associated with the Marinesco-Sjögren syndrome of cerebellar ataxia, congenital cataracts, mental and physical retardation and myopathy.
SUBJECTS AND METHODS: Seventeen individuals affected with the disorder, of common ancestry and marked consanguinity, were found in an isolated area in southwest Alabama; 11 were available for radiologic examination of parts of the skeleton. The range and frequency of skeletal abnormalities thus demonstrated were tabulated.

Between October 1969 and December 1980, radical hysterectomies were performed on 311 patients at the University of Alabama Medical Center in Birmingham. The hospital records of these patients were reviewed for perioperative morbidity. One hundred twenty-two patients (39.2%) had had previous cold knife conization. Eleven cases of hamster associated lymphocytic choriomeningitis occurred within a space of four months in Jefferson County, Alabama residents. A single Birmingham breeder was the source of the infected hamsters. Ten cases experienced an illness of one to three weeks duration with grippe-like symptoms being most frequent. This study examines the role that life chances and choices play in determining quality of life among homeless people. Given the prominent negative impact of homelessness, this paper specifically examines the impact of length of time homeless and location on adverse quality of life. OLS regression examined quality of life among 264 homeless adults living in Northwest Arkansas and Birmingham, Alabama. Eastern equine encephalitis virus (EEEV) is a mosquito-borne pathogen that cycles in birds but also causes severe disease in humans and horses. We examined patterns of avian host use by vectors of EEEV in Alabama from 2001 to 2009 using blood-meal analysis of field-collected mosquitoes and avian abundance surveys. This study investigates sex and race differences in normative beliefs about the acceptability of aggression across dimensions of severity of provocation (weak versus strong) and sex of provoker (male versus female). An epidemic of nonbacterial gastroenteritis affected nearly 100 students at a college campus in Jefferson County, Alabama. The outbreak closely resembled food poisoning, since there was a rapid occurrence of multiple cases within a short period. Vomiting occurred in 79% and diarrhea in 64%; fever was uncommon. Spondylolysis, a fatigue fracture in the neural arch of lumbar vertebrae, is common in Eskimos and some athletes. In Archaic Indians from northwestern Alabama, 17% of males and 20% of females with complete lumbar regions showed this defect.
