[Does amblyopia therapy make sense in eyes with severe organic defects?].

BACKGROUND: In eyes with severe organic defects the question arises if amblyopia therapy makes sense. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Three children are presented in whom despite severe organic eye diseases amblyopia therapy was tried. The first child had a unilateral large macular scar secondary to retinoblastoma treatment, the second a unilateral severe optic nerve atrophy secondary to an orbital hemangioma, and the third a unilateral large optic nerve coloboma. RESULTS: In the first case a reading visual acuity of 0.9 was achieved by occlusion therapy and in the second a reading visual acuity of 0.

Comparison between anisometropic and strabismic amblyopia using functional magnetic resonance imaging.

AIMS: To assess calcarine activation with functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) in patients with anisometropic and strabismic amblyopia. METHODS: 14 amblyopes (eight anisometropic and six strabismic) were studied with fMRI using stimuli of checkerboards of various checker sizes and temporal frequencies. While T2* weighted MRI were obtained every 3 seconds for 6 minutes, patients viewed the stimuli monocularly with either the amblyopic or sound eye. RESULTS: Amblyopic eyes showed reduced calcarine activation compared with contralateral sound eyes in fMRI in all subjects. The calcarine

The orientation discrimination deficit in strabismic amblyopia depends upon stimulus bandwidth.

We show that the previously reported orientation deficit in amblyopia (Skottun, B. C., Bradley, A., & Freeman, R. D. (1986). Orientation discrimination in amblyopia. Investigative Ophthalmology and Visual Science, 30, 532-537) also occurs for arrays of randomly positioned Gabor micropatterns for which explanations based on either neural disarray or local neural interactions would not hold. Furthermore, when using Gabors, we show that the deficit varies with the spatial frequency and orientational bandwidth of the stimuli used to measure it. We discuss two competing explanations for this, one b

Blepharophimosis, ptosis, epicanthus inversus, telecanthus, amblyopia, and menstrual abnormality in sisters.

Two sisters with blepharophimosis, ptosis, epicanthus inversus, and telecanthus were examined. Both patients also had amblyopia in the right eye and menstrual abnormalities associated with elevated serum luteinizing hormone and follicle-stimulating hormone. The patients' father was suspected of having blepharophimosis and ptosis. It is possible that the blepharophimosis syndrome observed in this family is of autosomal dominant inheritance. We believe that this condition of blepharophimosis, ptosis, epicanthus inversus, telecanthus, amblyopia, and menstrual abnormality found in our patients may

Modulation of amblyopia therapy following early surgery for unilateral congenital cataracts.

BACKGROUND: Stimulus deprivation amblyopia is the principal cause of visual impairment in infants with unilateral congenital cataract. Even if lensectomy is undertaken at an early age, intensive postoperative occlusion of the phakic eye is essential for the development of useful vision in the aphakic eye. Despite this, the optimum method of regulating occlusion therapy is uncertain. METHODS: Interocular acuity differences identified using clinical preferential looking techniques (Keeler cards) were used to regulate target levels of phakic eye occlusion in a prospective evaluation of 10 system

Spatiotemporal Dynamics of Binocular Interaction in Anisometropic Amblyopia Revealed by Classification Image.

PURPOSE: To explore the spatiotemporal dynamics of binocular interaction in anisometropic amblyopia. METHODS: Ten anisometropic amblyopes (26.2 ± 3.8 years) and 10 normal people (23.6 ± 2.0 years) participated in this study. The noise stimulus was a sequence of 9 frames, each consisting of 11 vertical, spatially adjacent bars whose luminance were randomly sampled. The participants detected whether a brighter bar (target) appeared in the noise stream under two monocular and two dichoptic conditions. The spatiotemporal perceptive field (PF) in each condition was obtained with subsecond and subd

Optic nerve elasticity and sheath diameter in amblyopia: A cross-sectional study.

This study aimed to examine and compare optic nerve elasticity (ONE) and optic nerve sheath diameter (ONSD) in amblyopic eyes and healthy fellow eyes. This prospective, observational study was conducted between October 2019 and December 2019. A total of 21 patients diagnosed with unilateral amblyopia were included in the study. The ONSD of both eyes of each patient was measured by ultrasonography, and ONE was measured by shear-wave elastography. The results were compared between healthy eyes and amblyopic eyes. Eleven female and 10 male patients were included in the study, and the median age o

Functional consequences of amblyopia and its impact on health-related quality of life.

Amblyopia (lazy eye) is the most common cause of monocular vision loss, affecting up to 4% of children and often persisting into adulthood. While treating the visual acuity deficit is often the focus of treatment, there is a pressing need for researchers, educators, and clinicians to understand the effects of amblyopia that extend beyond visual acuity. This review article highlights recent advances in understanding the impact of amblyopia on everyday life functioning. Amblyopia can significantly interfere with contrast sensitivity, attention, reading, eye-hand coordination, body composition, p

Neurofibromatosis type 2 misdiagnosed as amblyopia-a case report and literature review.

Neurofibromatosis type 2 (NF2) is characterized by bilateral vestibular schwannomas, and approximately 40-70% of affected children show ophthalmological involvement. Ophthalmological features may be the first sign of NF2; however, the symptoms associated with ocular lesions are diverse. The onset of NF2 is often obscure, resulting in missed or misdiagnosed cases. Herein, we report a case of NF2 in a child who initially presented with poor eyesight. The child had been treated for amblyopia for 7 years and was referred to the eye oncology department due to a lack of improvement in vision. At bir

Comparative Outcomes of Amblyopia Treatment in High Astigmatism: Stability and Sustained Improvements.

Background/Objectives: Astigmatism is a major risk factor for amblyopia. While optical correction improves visual acuity (VA), the long-term treatment outcomes, particularly in children with high astigmatism, remain understudied. This study aimed to determine the treatment effects, time course, and visual outcomes in children aged 3-7 years with high astigmatism and compared their VA improvement with those with low astigmatism. Methods: This retrospective cohort study included 63 children with untreated high with-the-rule astigmatism (≥+2.50 diopters [D]) and 46 with low astigmatism (≤1.50 D).

EEG Measurement for Suppression in Refractive Amblyopia and Push-Pull Perception Efficacy.

In order to evaluate refractive amblyopia suppression and understand the neural mechanism of amblyopia suppression and push-pull perception training, we recorded the EEG of refractive amblyopia children before, during, and after push-pull perception training. We compared the brain activity in different states through the steady-state visual evoked potentials (SSVEPs) response and power topography and compared them with normal children. We found that amblyopic and fellow eyes have different performances in fundamental and harmonic frequency responses. They also show different characteristics wh

Retinal and Optic Nerve Integrity Following Monocular Inactivation for the Treatment of Amblyopia.

In animal models, monocular deprivation (MD) by lid closure mimics the effects of unilateral amblyopia in humans. Temporary inactivation of one or both eyes with intraocular administration of tetrodotoxin (TTX) has recently been shown to promote recovery from the anatomical effects of MD at post-critical period ages when standard recovery strategies fail. In the current study, the retinae and optic nerves of animals subjected to 10 days of monocular retinal inactivation were assessed for pathological changes as a means of assessing the viability of this potential new amblyopia therapy. Retinal
