Mere exposure effect can be elicited in transient global amnesia.

Transient global amnesia (TGA) is one of the most severe forms of anterograde amnesia seen in clinical practice, yet patients may show evidence of spared learning during the amnesic episode. The scope of spared learning in such a severe form of amnesia remains uncertain, and it is also unclear whether findings from single-case studies hold up in group studies of TGA patients. In this group study, we found evidence that extended the domain of spared learning in TGA to include the mere exposure effect, whereby enhanced preference is primed by prior exposure to stimuli. We demonstrate this effect

Transient global amnesia: diffusion-weighted imaging lesions and cerebrovascular disease.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: A hypoxic-ischemic origin of transient global amnesia (TGA) has been suggested on the basis of the observation of infarctlike diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) abnormalities in some affected individuals. We tested this hypothesis by comparing vascular risk factors, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) markers of cerebral small-vessel disease, and other evidence of a cerebrovascular disorder between TGA patients with (DWI+) and without (DWI-) DWI lesions and normal community-based controls. METHODS: We retrospectively identified 86 patients hospitalized for TGA (mean+/-SD ag

[Two cases of transient global amnesia (TGA) following sildenafil use].

Only two cases connecting Sildenafil reception and acute memory impairment have been published. Two similar cases were observed in our clinic last year. Sildenafil is a potent inhibitor of cyclic guanosine monophosphate in the corpus cavernosum and therefore, increases the penile response to sexual stimulation and is used for erectile dysfunction. The most severe and life-threatening complications of Sildenafil are associated with combined administration with nitrates. The incidence of nonfatal myocardial infarction, stroke and death did not significantly differ between Sildenafil-treated and

Transient global amnesia may be caused by cerebral vein thrombosis.

Transient global amnesia (TGA) is a disorder of unknown aetiology, characterized by sudden loss of anterograde memory, in the absence other neurological signs or symptoms, followed by complete recovery in less than 24h. Precipitating actions such as strenuous physical activity or valsalva-like manoeuvres are frequently reported. Since first described in 1958, by Fisher and Adams, the possible pathophysiology has undergone much speculation. Nonconvulsive epileptic seizures, migraine, paradoxical embolism thorough a patent foramen ovale, and transient ischemic attacks have been proposed as poten

Weather conditions and transient global amnesia. A six-year study.

OBJECTIVES: The aetiology of transient global amnesia (TGA) is still unknown. Various events or activities have been shown to trigger TGA. A common feature of these events is an increased sympathetic activity which in turn may be influenced by meteorological factors. This prompted us to evaluate the influence of climatic parameters, and their variation on the incidence of TGA. METHODS: A total of 223 cases of TGA admitted to our hospital over a six-year period were studied. The study consisted of a comparison between the climatic parameters of days with TGA and those without TGA. The meteorol

Normalization of voice in spasmodic dysphonia during transient global amnesia.

We report on the case of a 69-year-old woman with Parkinson's disease and long-standing history of spasmodic dysphonia that reversed during an episode of transient global amnesia (TGA). To our knowledge, this phenomenon has not been reported before. We suggest possible mechanisms by which the pathophysiology of dystonia could reverse during TGA.

Transient global amnesia: neuropsychological findings after single and multiple attacks.

We examined by neuropsychological tests 41 patients who had presented attacks of transient global amnesia (TGA; 31 had single and 10 multiple episodes), comparing them with 41 matched normal controls. Patients with single attacks showed only two impaired memory tasks with respect to controls (immediate and long-term verbal memory), while patients with multiple attacks showed more impaired tasks in memory and visuoperceptual ability. These data confirm that TGA is a benign syndrome, but could leave a few subclinical memory deficits probably exacerbated by repeated attacks.

Transient global amnesia, epilepsy, and migraine: diagnostic comparisons and distinctions.

Transient global amnesia, epilepsy, and migraine are three common neurologic disorders likely to be encountered by military physicians. These three entities share many clinical, electroencephalographic, and pathophysiologic characteristics. We report a patient who exemplifies the indistinct boundaries among these conditions and whose response to treatment supports the use of anticonvulsants for selected patients who have recalcitrant migraine.

Transient global amnesia -- its clinical and pathophysiological basis and prognosis.

28 patients with transient global amnesia (TGA) were followed for a mean period of 73 months. The patients fell into 3 diagnostic groups: a group where patients had associated symptoms and signs of transient focal cerebral ischemia (TIA), a migraine group and a miscellaneous group. 22 patients had evidence of cerebrovascular disease or risk factors for cerebrovascular disease, and a vascular basis for the amnesic attack was highly suggestive in 25 patients. During the follow-up period 2 patients died, 3 had recurrent TGA and 13 developed a completed stroke or suffered from further TIA's. Perma

Transient global amnesia associated with bradycardia and temporal lobe spikes.

This paper presents electroencephalographic evidence of bilateral independent temporal lobe spiking during an episode of transient global amnesia. The amnesia occurred during a period of hypotension secondary to sinus bradycardia. The amnesia recurred in absence of bradycardia and hypotension. The temporal lobe spiking leads credence to the thought that transient global amnesia occurs as the result of seizure activity.

Transient global amnesia: clinical and electroencephalographic findings in 10 cases.

We studied 10 patients with transient global amnesia (TGA). Routine electroencephalograms (EEGs) were normal in six; two showed mild temporal lobe abnormalities, one had bitemporal delta activity with rare sharp waves, and one showed bioccipital rhythmic theta activity. Nasopharyngeal (NP) recordings were obtained in seven patients; five showed independent mesial temporal spike discharges during drug-induced sleep. The discharges are probably due to transient ischemia in deep temporal structures.

Transient global amnesia associated with cardiac arrhythmia and digitalis intoxication.

A 54-year-old woman with transient global amnesia (TGA) was found to have digitalis-induced bradyarrhythmia with atrioventricular dissociation. The amnesia cleared only upon resolution of the arrhythmia. Cardiac arrhythmia has been postulated as a cause, but TGA in the setting of cardiac arrhythmia has not been documented previously. Cardiac arrhythmia should be excluded in patients with TGA, and TGA, a syndrome diagnosed on clinical grounds alone, must be recognized as one possible manifestation of treatable, potentially serious cardiac or cerebrovascular disease.

The remains of the day: neuropsychological findings in postacute transient global amnesia.

INTRODUCTION: Current clinical diagnostic criteria of transient global amnesia (TGA) require the episode to completely resolve within 24 h. Small case series investigating the neuropsychological profiles obtained during the first days after TGA are inconclusive, with some suggesting the persistence of memory deficits. METHODS: In this retrospective observational study, neuropsychological data of 185 TGA patients obtained during the first days following an attack were analysed. Data of cognitive functions assessed in at least 50 patients were evaluated and dichotomised according to z-values as

[A case of transient global amnesia associated with painless myocardial infarction].

A 66-year-old woman with a history of hypertension complained about sudden short-term memory loss. On arrival to our outpatient clinic, she was alert and oriented and did not have chest pain or shortness of breath. Neurological and neuropsychological examinations were within normal limits. In light of a transient anterograde amnestic attack and no neurological focal deficit, we clinically diagnosed transient global amnesia (TGA). To confirm whether there was an intracranial lesion or not, diffusion-weighted MRI of the brain was performed, and revealed hyper-intense lesions in the left hippocam

Transient Global Amnesia as a Possible First Manifestation of COVID-19.

Evidence of involvement of the nervous system in COVID-19 disease is accumulating. We describe a case of a 53-year-old man presented with classic syndrome of transient global amnesia with symptoms lasting less than 24 hours and mild transient unexplained fever. Workup including brain MRI, electroencephalogram, and chest X ray was negative and the patient was discharged. The day after discharge, the patient started to experience the classic respiratory and systemic COVID-19 illness and was eventually readmitted with hypoxic respiratory failure and positive COVID-19 test a week after the first h
