The wild dog (Lycaon pictus): a new host for Ancylostoma caninum.

Faecal nematode egg counts performed on one captive and 49 free-ranging wild dogs (Lycaon pictus) revealed the presence of eggs of Ancylostoma spp. in 12 (24%) of the animals. The captive wild dog pup showed anorexia, general malaise, pale mucous membranes and black stools. Adult male and female Ancylostoma caninum were recovered from an approximately 3-month-old pup which died of distemper-like disease and a 9-year-old severely debilitated captive wild dog. A single adult A. caninum was also recovered from the intestines of a free-ranging wild dog in the Kruger National Park. These findings c

Ancylostoma ceylanicum: immunological consequences after anthelmintics therapy in hamsters (Mesocricetus auratus).

Alterations in immunological response before and after chemotherapy were investigated in hamsters infected with A. ceylanicum. Four reference anthelmintics mebendazole, albendazole, levamisole and pyrantel pamoate and one newly synthesized anthelmintic compound 81-470 were used. Drugs in curative doses were administered on day 30 post infection and the humoral response was assessed by counter immunoelectrophoresis and ELISA and cell mediated immunity by delayed type of hypersensitivity reaction. In infected untreated animals the precipitins appeared on day 30 and remained prominent till day 25

Ancylostoma caninum: a report on the peripheral eosinophilia in naive and immunized Swiss albino mice.

The number of peripheral eosinophils was counted in female Swiss albino mice on 1, 4, 9, 16 and 30 days after infection with various single (500, 1000 and 2000) and weekly repeated (500 + + 500 + 1000, 1000 + 1000 and 1000 + 1000 + 2000) doses of filariform Ancylostoma caninum larvae. The eosinophil response was significantly higher in infected than in uninfected mice and reached a peak on day 16 in naive and day 4 and 9 in immunized mice. Immunized mice were significantly more eosinophilic than the naive mice. An attempt has been made to correlate eosinophilia with immunity of mice to A. cani

Pharmacological estimation of histamine in the intestine of mice experimentally infected with single doses of Ancylostoma caninum larvae.

Histamine content of the intestine of young female Swiss albino mice experimentally infected per os with low (500) and high (2000) doses of Ancylostoma caninum larvae was studied. The histamine level increased in both the experimental groups reaching peak values on the 16th day post infection in animals inoculated with a dose of 500 larvae and on the 30th day post infection in animals inoculated with 2000 larvae; the histamine content was 2.5 times higher in the former and 4 times higher in the latter than that in the uninfected controls.
