Background: Iron deficiency anemia (IDA) is among the most prevalent nutritional disorders worldwide and a growing public health concern among women in Saudi Arabia. Available Saudi evidence remains fragmented, with single-center studies that vary by population, region, and diagnostic criteria. This review evaluated the prevalence of anemia in Saudi Arabia, assessed gender-related differences across the lifespan, and highlighted local determinants and prevention strategies relevant to women. Methods: Eight cross-sectional studies (26,412 participants) reporting anemia prevalence in Saudi indiv…

Aplastic anemia is a rare but potentially life-threatening disease that may affect older patients. Data regarding the treatment of aplastic anemia in this ageing population remains scarce. We conducted a retrospective nationwide multicenter study in France to examine current treatments for aplastic anemia patients over 60 years old. Our aims were to evaluate efficacy and tolerance, and to analyze predictive factors for response and survival. Over the course of a decade, 88 patients (median age 68.5 years) were identified in 19 centers, with a median follow up of 2.7 years; 21% had very severe …

Paraoxonase-1 is an esterase enzyme and it has 3 types of activity, namely paraoxonase, arylesterase, and diazoxonase. It has been reported that paraoxonase-1 deficiency is related to increased susceptibility to development of atherosclerosis and cardiovascular disease. The aim of this study was to investigate serum paraoxonase and arylesterase activities in children with iron deficiency anemia and vitamin B(12) deficiency anemia. Thirty children with iron deficiency anemia, 30 children with vitamin B(12) deficiency anemia, and 40 healthy children aged 6 months to 6 years were enrolled in this…

The WHO recommends exclusive breast-feeding (EBF) for the first 6 mo of life to decrease the burden of infectious disease. However, some are concerned about the effect of EBF >6 mo on iron status of children in developing countries in which anemia is prevalent. This study examines the risk of anemia in relation to the duration of EBF and maternal anemia in a birth cohort studied between March 1998 and April 2003. All infant birth weights were >or=2.2 kg. All mothers received home-based peer counseling to promote EBF. Infant feeding data were collected weekly. Nurses measured hemoglobin (Hb) va…

The anemia of chronic disease is a prevalent, poorly understood condition that afflicts patients with a wide variety of diseases, including infections, malignancies, and rheumatologic disorders. It is characterized by a blunted erythropoietin response by erythroid precursors, decreased red blood cell survival, and a defect in iron absorption and macrophage iron retention, which interrupts iron delivery to erythroid precursor cells. We noted that patients with large hepatic adenomas had severe iron refractory anemia similar to that observed in anemia of chronic disease. This anemia resolved spo…

OBJECTIVE: Fanconi anemia (FA) is a human autosomal-recessive cancer susceptibility disorder characterized by multiple congenital abnormalities, progressive bone marrow failure, and cellular sensitivity to mitomycin C (MMC). FA has at least eight complementation groups (A, B, C, D1, D2, E, F, G), and six of the FA genes have been cloned. Several FA proteins, including FANCA, FANCC, FANCF, and FANCG, interact in a nuclear complex, and this complex is required for the activation (monoubiquitination) of the downstream FANCD2 protein. Activation of FANCD2 results in the assembly of FANCD2/BRCA1 fo…

Clinical pallor is recommended as a simple way to detect severe anemia, but more data are needed on its accuracy and usefulness when assessed by nonphysicians in diverse settings. We measured hemoglobin and trained non-physician health workers to assess clinical pallor of the conjunctiva, palm and nail beds in five population samples in Nepal and Zanzibar, where severe anemia is common. In total, 5,760 individuals were examined, 3,072 of whom were anemic and 192 of whom had severe anemia (hemoglobin <70 g/L). The prevalence of pallor did not correspond to the prevalence of anemia or severe ane…

Serum erythropoietin (EPO) was measured by radioimmunoassay in 67 patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Twenty of these patients judged to have iron deficiency anemia, based on reduced serum ferritin levels, had higher serum EPO levels than did the 24 other anemic patients with normal or elevated serum ferritin levels. A significant negative correlation between serum EPO and hemoglobin concentrations was noted in the former group, but not in the latter. Human recombinant erythropoietin (r-EPO) was administered to 6 anemic patients with RA, resulting in improvement of anemia in 4 patients, 2…

1. The blood chemistry of normal adult rats and of splenectomized adult rats suffering with Bartonella muris anemia has been studied. 2. Non-protein nitrogen rises with the increase in severity of the anemia. Total serum proteins, serum albumin and serum globulin decrease slightly. Uric acid remains unchanged. 3. Serum chloride concentration remains unchanged, but the concentration of chlorides in the blood increases. 4. An acidosis as estimated by the carbon dioxide-combining capacity of the blood is observed at the height of the infection. 5. The blood sugar decreases and the liver glycogen …

Sideroblastic anemias (SAs) represent a diverse group of congenital and acquired disorders, characterized by anemia and the presence of ring sideroblasts in the bone marrow. Congenital sideroblastic anemia (CSA) arises from genetic mutations that disrupt heme and iron metabolism within mitochondria. The most common form of CSA is X-linked sideroblastic anemia (XLSA), caused by mutations in the erythroid-specific aminolevulinate synthase 2 (ALAS2) gene, a key enzyme in the heme biosynthesis pathway in erythroid cells. On the other hand, the most common form of acquired SA is myelodysplastic syn…

Hepatitis-associated aplastic anemia (HAAA) is a rare but life-threatening disorder that requires early recognition and intervention. Pediatricians play a critical role in identifying cases where acute hepatitis transitions to severe bone marrow failure. This review presents the diagnostic and therapeutic complexities associated with HAAA, emphasizing the importance of a multidisciplinary approach. Key topics include the pathophysiology of immune-mediated marrow suppression, diagnostic strategies (eg, immunophenotyping, bone marrow biopsy), and management approaches (eg, immunosuppressive ther…

Mesenteric angina has a high mortality rate. Occlusion of the superior mesenteric artery is the most common cause. Increasingly, it is managed endovascularly instead of by open revascularization. Despite the lower risk of complications in minimally invasive procedures, it is important to be mindful of long-term sequelae of minor complications. Patient education regarding risks and complications is paramount for better clinical outcomes. The risks of transbrachial angiography procedures are low. Postprocedural vigilance for interventionists and written educational advice to patients are paramou

OBJECTIVE: Placental abruption can cause maternal blood loss and maternal anemia. It is less certain whether abruption can cause fetal blood loss and neonatal anemia.
STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective multi-hospital 24-month analysis of women with placental abruption and their neonates.
RESULTS: Of 55,111 births, 678 (1.2%) had confirmed abruption; 83% of these neonates (564) had one or more hemoglobins recorded in the first day. Four-hundred-seventy (83.3%) had a normal hemoglobin (≥5th% reference interval) while 94 (16.7%) had anemia, relative risk 3.26 (95% CI, 2.66-4.01) vs. >360,000 neonates …

As an independent disease, aplastic anemia (AA) has been recognized for more than a century. When AA is diagnosed, other non-AA bone marrow failures should be excluded. It is termed as exclusive diagnosis of AA. The exclusive diagnosis of AA is helplessly based on that there is no parameter by which AA can be sensitively and specifically diagnosed now. So further searching for the meaningful diagnostic parameters of AA should be carried on to establish a direct diagnostic protocol of this disease and make it possible to differentiate it clearly from other bone marrow failure disease such as co…

Through its functions in oxygen delivery, electron transport, and enzymatic activity, iron is crucial for the operation of all cells. High metabolic rate cells need more iron and are more likely to malfunction when there is an iron deficit. Since the mother's blood volume expands during pregnancy, and the fetus grows and develops, there is a sharp increase in the need for iron. Negative pregnancy outcomes, such as increased maternal sickness, low birthweight, preterm, and intrauterine growth restriction, are linked to iron deficiency. IDA, or nutritional iron deficiency anemia, affects more th…

Anemia is the most common extraintestinal manifestation of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Although there are several causes of anemia in IBD, the two most frequent etiologies are iron deficiency anemia and anemia of chronic disease. Despite the high prevalence of anemia in IBD and its significant impact on patient's quality of life, this complication is still underdiagnosed and undertreated by providers. Active screening for anemia, structured assessment, comprehensive management, and multidisciplinary collaboration are needed in IBD patients. The cornerstone of anemia management depends on…
