BACKGROUND: Many studies that collect maternal and neonatal outcomes rely on patient self-report phone calls. It is unclear how reliable or accurate these phone call reports are.
OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the reliability of telephone calls in information collection in IVF.
STUDY DESIGN: The women were interviewed seven days after delivery by a nurse via telephone. The maternal and neonatal outcomes were recorded based on a self-report from one of the spouses. Meanwhile, the standardized electronic hospitalized discharge records were extracted from the hospital medical database. For each case, m

OBJECTIVE: The etiology of anemia in premature neonates is multifactorial and may involve anemia of inflammation mediated by hepcidin. Hepcidin expression is suppressed by vitamin D. We aimed to investigate the interrelationship between hepcidin, anemia, and vitamin D status in preterm infants.
STUDY DESIGN: Preterm infants aged 1 to 5 weeks were prospectively recruited at the neonatal intensive care unit of the Dana Dwek Children Hospital. Blood counts and serum levels of hepcidin, ferritin, iron, 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D] and C-reactive protein (CRP) were measured and compared between a

BACKGROUND: There is limited information on neonatal outcomes in complicated pregnancies with abnormal placentation. The aim of this study was to assess the neonatal outcomes of abnormal placentation.
METHODS: In this case-control study, known cases of abnormal placentation between the years 2010 and 2017 were extracted. The case group consisted of pregnant women with abnormal placentation (172 cases), while controls were selected from repeated cesarean section cases with normal placentation (341 people).
RESULTS: In the case group, 145 cases (84.3%) had placenta accreta, 12 cases (7.07%) ha

BACKGROUND: An emergency-release blood transfusion (ERBT) protocol (uncrossmatched type O-negative red blood cells, AB plasma, AB platelets) is critical for neonatology practice. However, few reports of emergency transfusions are available. We conducted an ERBT quality improvement project as a basis for progress.
STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: For each ERBT in the past 8 years, we logged indications, products, locations and timing of the transfusions, and outcomes.
RESULTS: One hundred forty-nine ERBTs were administered; 42% involved a single blood product, and 58% involved two or more. The incid

Hereditary pyropoikilocytosis (HPP) is characterised by severe hemolytic anemia due to membrane instability. We report the case of a 13-day-old boy with neonatal jaundice and severe hemolytic anemia. A peripheral smear examination showed severe anisopoikylocytosis. DNA sequencing revealed compound double heterozygous for mutant α-spectrin SPTA1 (Arg28His) and homozygous αLELY polymorphism (low expression α-spectrin allele), compatible with diagnosis of HPP.The patient required a blood transfusion initially, but spontaneously improved after two years. Our case illustrates that, despite the pres

Congenital thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura is a rare autosomal recessive disorder presenting with hemolytic anemia, thrombocytopenia, micro vascular thrombosis, and end organ damage. Here, we present a case of a 7-year-old girl having recurrent neonatal hemolysis, developmental delay, frequent seizures, and thrombocytopenia. Characteristic clinical picture and gene sequencing of a disintegrin and metalloproteinase with thrombospondin motifs 13 confirmed the diagnosis of Upshaw-Schulman syndrome. She was treated successfully with plasma infusion. The patient is alive at 6-month post follow-

Glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) deficiency is the most common RBC abnormality, affecting 400 million people globally. Neonatal jaundice, hemolytic anemia, icteric skin, dark urine, and fever are usually the primary signs of this condition, which is generally diagnosed between the ages of infancy and 16 years old. Therefore, its first manifestation in old age is an unexpected phenomenon. Here, we present the case of a 70-year-old man with no past medical history of G6PD deficiency that was admitted to our hospital due to COVID-19 infection and developed acute hemolytic anemia while rec

Placental chorioangiomas are benign vascular tumors. Large chorioangiomas cause several obstetric complications, including premature labor, placental abruption, polyhydramnios, fetal hydrops, fetal growth restriction, fetal hepatosplenomegaly, cardiomegaly, congestive heart failure, and fetal death. The neonatal complications are hydrops fetalis, microangiopathic hemolytic anemia, and thrombocytopenia. The cause of perinatal cerebral arterial infarction remains unclear in the majority of cases. Investigators have reported a number of obstetric and neonatal complications in the setting of perin

Significant hyperbilirubinaemia, anemia, and splenomegaly are common features in patients with severe haemolysis due to pyruvate kinase (PK) deficiency. Until now, severe neonatal PK deficiency has not been associated with fatal liver disease at this age. We present two neonatal cases of severe PK deficiency complicated with progressive fatal liver disease. The patients presented with severe haemolysis, progressive cholestasis, and hepatosplenomegaly, and both patients ultimately developed liver failure at a very young age. Despite extensive investigations, no specific explanation for liver di

A total of 371 newborn infants falling into 3 groups, non-haemolytic jaundice, haemolytic jaundice, and non-jaundiced controls, have been reassessed in the 6th year of life as regards neurological, audiological, and psychological function. Neurological handicap was concentrated among the infants of low birth weight and was not related to jaundice, apart from one case of athetoid cerebral palsy with deafness. No other cases of perceptive deafness were discovered. Intelligence testing on the Stanford Binet scale showed no relation between depth of jaundice and I.Q.These findings support the majo

BACKGROUND: Neonatal microcytosis may reveal complex hemoglobinopathy combinations requiring molecular clarification.
OBSERVATION: We describe a neonate with homozygous HbE coinherited with α-thalassemia (-3.7 kb deletion) and Hb Constant Spring on the other allele. At birth, marked microcytosis with mild anemia prompted haemoglobin analysis. Despite initial concerns raised by the multiple hemoglobin gene anomalies, follow-up remained asymptomatic, with persistent microcytosis and relative erythrocytosis. Family screening showed that both parents had HbAE. The father carried Hb Constant Sprin

Alloimmunity in pregnancy is the basis for two of the major complications of pregnancy in transfusion medicine: hemolytic disease of the fetus and newborn (HDFN), and fetal and neonatal alloimmune thrombocytopenia (FNAIT). Use of Rh(D) immune globulin has dramatically reduced the incidence of HDFN in Rh(D)-mismatched pregnancies. Treatment of HDFN may involve intrauterine transfusion, with fetal and neonatal survival rates of 70% to 90%. Treatments for FNAIT include immune globulin, steroids, or in severe cases, intrauterine platelet transfusions. Transfusion medicine is central to the managem

Transient abnormal myelopoiesis (TAM) is observed in a few neonates with Down syndrome. While a large proportion undergo complete remission without any treatment, some of them can develop myeloid leukemia of Down syndrome (ML-DS) in the future. Without proper treatment, mortality can be high. Here we have described an interesting and difficult-to-treat case of a neonatal with Down syndrome who presented with anemia, thrombocytopenia, and 75% blasts. We came across multiple challenges in treatment due to severe pneumonia.

Introduction Maternal anemia is still a major global health issue, especially in underdeveloped nations where its high incidence is a result of inadequate prenatal care and nutritional inadequacies. It has a negative impact on the health of both the mother and the fetus, increasing morbidity and mortality. Objective To determine the association between the severity of maternal anemia and adverse fetomaternal outcomes among pregnant women at Hayatabad Medical Complex, Peshawar. Methodology This cross-sectional study was carried out from January to December 2024 at the Hayatabad Medical Complex
