Is predation by ants driving the evolution of tarantulas? First report of tarantulas (Araneae, Theraphosidae) actively using urticating setae against invertebrates.

The use of urticating setae by tarantulas from the Americas and the Caribbean has been known for centuries and is considered a defensive behavior against vertebrate predators. However, their passive use against invertebrates, such as parasitic fly maggots and ants, has also been recently proposed, but no active use of these setae against invertebrates has been observed or tested. In this study, eight tarantula specimens representing four different species from the family Theraphosidae were tested in twelve tests with the army ant Eciton burchelli and the carpenter ant Camponotus rufipes. Four …

[Rabbits and leaf-cutting ants: the Brazilian plan to use the myxoma virus (MYXV) against rabbit plagues in Australia, 1896-1952].

This article analyzes the singularity of historical, scientific, and political processes from the discovery of the disease caused by the myxoma virus (MYXV) that came to be known as infectious myxomatosis to the application of this virus against a plague of rabbits in Australia. This narrative focuses on research by Henrique de Beaurepaire Aragão, a researcher at the Oswaldo Cruz Institute, and later efforts by the scientist Jean Macnamara to promote studies and implement MYXV in Australia. The scientists' research notes were consulted, along with official documents recording the experiments a

Ultrastructural studies of the mandibular glands of the minima, media and soldier ants of Atta sexdens rubropilosa (Forel 1908) (Hymenoptera: Formicidae).

The mandibular glands of Hymenoptera are structures associated with the mandibles and constitute part of the salivary glands system. Histological studies in workers of Atta sexdens rubropilosa revealed that this gland contains two portions: a secretory and a storage portion or reservoir. Both portions are connected by means of canaliculi. The object of the present work was the study of the ultratructure of the mandibular glands of minima, media and soldier ant of A. s. rubropilosa by TEM techniques. The glands, in the three castes studied, possess a reservoir, constituted by a simple pavemento

The Biology of the Clonal Raider Ant (Ooceraea biroi) and Its Role as a Social Insect Model System.

The clonal raider ant, Ooceraea biroi, is a blind, subterranean insect that combines several rare life history traits which make it uniquely suited for use as a laboratory model. The species has lost the queen caste; instead, colonies are composed entirely of clonally reproducing workers. Workers lay eggs in synchrony, giving rise to discrete and age-matched cohorts of new workers. Despite this simple biology, the clonal raider ant displays sophisticated social and collective behaviors, including scout-initiated group raids of live arthropod prey as well as regular colony emigrations. The spec

Pipeline for acoustic classification of ant (Formica rufa) behaviours: a suggested workflow for soil macrofauna studies.

Acoustic monitoring has been touted as an automatable monitoring technique to study the presence, activity or acoustic communication of soil animals. Yet current acoustic approaches have been criticized for lacking understanding of what soil fauna behaviours they are detecting. We investigate whether specific insect behaviours could be identified with sound by recording Red Wood Ants (Formica rufa) behaviours (running, struggling, biting and stridulation-like behaviour) with a contact microphone. We label recordings by hand, then extract two types of acoustic features, spectral and cepstral fe…

Gut-microbiome composition, single nucleotide polymorphisms, and differentially expressed genes correlate with aggression in an ant.

Animals frequently display aggressive behavior, for example, when competing for food. Aggression is influenced by various extrinsic and intrinsic factors such as the microbiome and genetics. However, we currently lack understanding what factors cause animals to start aggression. Here, we use an ant species to test if chemical, microbiome, genomic, and/or transcriptomic traits correlate with the start of aggression and the reactions to it, namely reacting aggressively or peacefully. We found nine bacterial operational taxonomic units, mutations in two genes, and eight differentially expressed g

Topological Progress Potential-Enhanced Continuous-Space Ant Colony Algorithm for Robot Path Planning.

To address the issues of traditional grid-based Ant Colony Optimization path planning in discretized continuous space-including limited direction freedom, lack of global topological guidance, and difficulty in balancing path smoothness and safety margin-a topological progress potential-enhanced continuous-space ant colony path planning algorithm (TPP-CSACO) is proposed. TPP-CSACO discards grid-based expansion; instead, a perception circle centered on each ant is defined, movement is executed via a sector-based perception framework with probabilistic direction selection, and band-shaped decayin

Differentiating ante-mortem from post-mortem findings on fetal and pediatric post-mortem imaging.

Interpreting fetal and pediatric post-mortem imaging remains challenging. One of the most important aspects of post-mortem computed tomography (PMCT) and post-mortem magnetic resonance imaging (PMMRI) image interpretation is to be able to confidently differentiate ante-mortem pathology from the range of normal post-mortem changes that occur. In this article, we discuss the normal post-mortem findings in fetal and pediatric imaging for the central nervous system, thorax, abdomen, and musculoskeletal system, and the limitations of computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in

ANT-Mediated Inhibition of the Permeability Transition Pore Alleviates Palmitate-Induced Mitochondrial Dysfunction and Lipotoxicity.

Hyperlipidemia is a major risk factor for vascular lesions in diabetes mellitus and other metabolic disorders, although its basis remains poorly understood. One of the key pathogenetic events in this condition is mitochondrial dysfunction associated with the opening of the mitochondrial permeability transition (MPT) pore, a drop in the membrane potential, and ROS overproduction. Here, we investigated the effects of bongkrekic acid and carboxyatractyloside, a potent blocker and activator of the MPT pore opening, respectively, acting through direct interaction with the adenine nucleotide translo

Invasive Ant Detection: Evaluating Honeybee Learning and Discrimination Abilities for Detecting Solenopsis invicta Odor.

Invasive red imported fire ants (Solenopsis invicta) create a serious threat to public safety, agriculture, biodiversity, and the local economy, necessitating early detection and surveillance, which are currently time-consuming and dependent on the inspector's expertise. This study marks an initial investigation into the potential of honeybees (Apis mellifera) to detect and discriminate the odor of S. invicta through the olfactory conditioning of proboscis extension responses. Deceased S. invicta were used as conditioned stimuli to ensure relevance to non-infested areas. The results showed tha…

Identification score for robust and secure identification using ante- and post-mortem skull CT scans.

Due to their unique anatomy, paranasal sinuses have been used for comparative identification between post-mortem CT (PMCT) and ante-mortem CT (AMCT). However, data security issues arise when transferring raw AMCT images of a suspected identity. The aim of this study was to derive and validate an identification score based on CT slices extracted from successive CTs for the identification of subjects. For derivation procedure, we included patients who underwent two successive AMCTs at ≥ 1-year interval (n = 98), and 4 radiologists individually assessed similarity of prespecified CT slices (cente

Ant Colony Optimization-Enabled CNN Deep Learning Technique for Accurate Detection of Cervical Cancer.

Источник пометил публикацию как отозванную

Cancer is characterized by abnormal cell growth and proliferation, which are both diagnostic indicators of the disease. When cancerous cells enter one organ, there is a risk that they may spread to adjacent tissues and eventually to other organs. Cancer of the cervix of the uterus often initially manifests itself in the uterine cervix, which is located at the very bottom of the uterus. Both the growth and death of cervical cells are characteristic features of this condition. False-negative results provide a significant moral dilemma since they may cause women to get an incorrect diagnosis of c

Three-dimensional kinematics of leaf-cutter ant mandibles: not all dicondylic joints are simple hinges.

Insects use their mandibles for a variety of tasks, including food processing, material transport, nest building, brood care, and fighting. Despite this functional diversity, mandible motion is typically thought to be constrained to rotation about a single fixed axis. Here, we conduct a direct quantitative test of this 'hinge joint hypothesis' in a species that uses its mandibles for a wide range of tasks: Atta vollenweideri leaf-cutter ants. Mandible movements from live restrained ants were reconstructed in three dimensions using a multi-camera rig. Rigid body kinematic analyses revealed stro…

Comprehensive Detoxification Mechanism Assessment of Red Imported Fire Ant (Solenopsis invicta) against Indoxacarb.

The red imported fire ant (Solenopsis invicta) is one of the deadliest invasive ant species that threatens the world by disrupting biodiversity, important functions within a natural ecosystem, and community structure. They are responsible for huge economic losses in the infested countries every year. Synthetic insecticides, especially indoxacarb, have been broadly used to control S. invicta for many years. However, the biochemical response of S. invicta to indoxacarb remains largely undiscovered. Here, we used the sublethal doses of indoxacarb on the S. invicta collected from the eight differe

Lateralized ante mortem and post mortem pathology in a case of Lewy body disease with corticobasal syndrome.

INTRODUCTION: Lewy body diseases are pathologically characterized by α-synuclein pathology. Alzheimer's disease (AD) co-pathology can influence phenotypes. In vivo AD biomarkers can suggest the presence of this co-pathology in unusual cases, but pathological validation remains essential. METHODS: This patient originally presented with corticobasal syndrome and later developed visual hallucinations and parkinsonism consistent with a synucleinopathy. The patient underwent CSF sampling, 18F-flortaucipir PET scanning, and brain donation with bilateral regions available for digital histological an

Establishment and Social Impacts of the Red Imported Fire Ant, Solenopsis invicta, (Hymenoptera: Formicidae) in Taiwan.

The first report of the red imported fire ant (RIFA), Solenopsis invicta Buren, in Taiwan was in the city of Taoyuan in 2003. The government has made great efforts to bring RIFA-infested areas under control. RIFA has gradually spread outward since its discovery, but it is still confined in northern Taiwan, in part due to the control efforts. RIFA is well established in densely populated environments (i.e., urban areas), causing damage to public utilities and significantly affects the inhabitants of Taiwan. Out of 10,127 human encounters with RIFA reported by the Plant Pest Information Manageme…

Mobile Robot Path Planning Based on Time Taboo Ant Colony Optimization in Dynamic Environment.

This article aims to improve the problem of slow convergence speed, poor global search ability, and unknown time-varying dynamic obstacles in the path planning of ant colony optimization in dynamic environment. An improved ant colony optimization algorithm using time taboo strategy is proposed, namely, time taboo ant colony optimization (TTACO), which uses adaptive initial pheromone distribution, rollback strategy, and pheromone preferential limited update to improve the algorithm's convergence speed and global search ability. For the poor global search ability of the algorithm and the unknown

Samsum ant venom protects against carbon tetrachloride-induced acute spleen toxicity in vivo.

Many active molecules used in the development of new drugs are produced by ants. Present study assessed antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties of Samsum ant venom (SAV) extract in carbon tetrachloride (CCL4)-induced spleen toxicity. Toxicity and oxidative stress were measured in four experimental groups: a negative control group without any treatment, a positive control group (CCl4-treated rats; a single dose of 1 ml/kg CCL4), an experimental group of CCl4-treated rats co-treated daily with SAV (100 μl), and a group to determine safe use with rats treated only with SAV (100 μl) daily for…

Hybrid-ALPPS followed by Ante Situm with Cardiopulmonary Bypass: Rapid Liver Augmentation and Complex Surgery.

BACKGROUND: Tumors invading the inferior vena cava (IVC) and hepatic veins pose a challenge for surgeons. Hannoun et al.1 were able to show that the resection of these tumors can be done under hypothermia in the Ante-Situm position. Additionally, not only the localization of the tumor but the remaining volume of the remnant liver (FLR) needs to be considered. Schnitzbauer et al.2 were able to induce massive liver hypertrophy in a short period, combining an in-situ split with a portal vein ligation (ALPPS). As this controversial technique has evolved, a safe ALPPS can be performed nowadays.3 To
