We assessed if the Revised Child Anxiety and Depression Scale (RCADS) measures anxiety symptoms similarly across age groups within adolescence. This is crucial for valid comparison of anxiety levels between different age groups. Anxiety symptoms were assessed biennially in a representative population sample (n = 2226) at three time points (age range 10-17 years) using the RCADS anxiety subscales (generalized anxiety disorder [GAD], obsessive-compulsive disorder [OCD], panic disorder [PD], separation anxiety [SA], social phobia [SP]). We examined longitudinal measurement invariance of the RCADS

In this study, we prospectively examined developmental trajectories of five anxiety disorder symptom dimensions (generalized anxiety disorder, panic disorder, school anxiety, separation anxiety disorder, and social anxiety disorder) from early to late adolescence in a community sample of 239 adolescents, assessed annually over 8 years. Latent growth modeling indicated different developmental trajectories from early into late adolescence for the different anxiety disorder symptoms, with some symptoms decreasing and other symptoms increasing over time. Sex differences in developmental trajectori…

OBJECTIVE: To examine the efficacy of a developmentally appropriate parent-child cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) protocol for anxiety disorders in children ages 4-7 years.
DESIGN: Randomized wait-list controlled trial. Conduct: Sixty-four children (53% female, mean age 5.4 years, 80% European American) with anxiety disorders were randomized to a parent-child CBT intervention (n = 34) or a 6-month wait-list condition (n = 30). Children were assessed by interviewers blind to treatment assignment, using structured diagnostic interviews with parents, laboratory assessments of behavioral inhibi

Little is known about the prevalence of anxiety disorders in Han Chinese children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). This is an important topic for research as symptoms may be written off as being due to ASD alone.ObjectiveTo provide prevalence rates of anxiety disorders in a clinical sample of Han Chinese children with ASD and identify correlates which may be amenable to intervention.MethodThe pre-existing ASD diagnosis of 165 Hong Kong Han Chinese was confirmed with the Chinese version of the Developmental, Dimensional and Diagnostic Interview (3Di). Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) has proven long-term effects in youth with anxiety disorders. However, only a few studies have examined predictors of long-term outcomes of CBT treatment. The present study investigated possible predictors of long-term treatment outcomes in youth with mixed anxiety disorders treated in community mental health clinics. A total of 139 youth (mean age at assessment 15.5 years, range 11-21 years) with a principal diagnosis of separation anxiety disorder, social anxiety disorder, and/or generalized anxiety disorder were evaluated a mean of 3.9 years post-treatment

The levels of agreement between self- and parent/proxy-reports of anxiety and depressive symptoms in pediatric epilepsy were evaluated. Data were drawn from 56 pairs of children with epilepsy and at least one parent. Anxiety symptoms were assessed using the Screen for Child Anxiety Related Emotional Disorders (SCARED), while depressive symptoms were assessed using the Mood and Feeling Questionnaire (MFQ). Moderate to substantial levels of agreement between raters when reporting various anxiety symptoms, such as panic/somatic disorder, generalized anxiety disorder, separation anxiety disorder,

To evaluate a developmental psychopathology approach for understanding adolescent social anxiety, parent-reported predictors of social anxiety were examined in a nonclinical sample of adolescents. Structured diagnostic interviews were obtained from biological parents of 770 participants. Potential risk factors assessed included child characteristics: negative affect, shyness, separation anxiety disorder, and childhood chronic illness, as well as parent characteristics: major depression, panic disorder, and agoraphobia. Adolescent social anxiety was measured multiple times during high school. F

This study evaluated the relationship between threat perception bias and anxiety among children and adolescents in China. A sample of 1,004 elementary, middle and high school students aged 9 to 19 years listened to stories containing themes of generalized anxiety, social anxiety and separation anxiety in either an ambiguous or non-ambiguous context. The story content included topics such as upset stomach, teacher-student interaction, and parents who are late to return home. Multiple threat perception indices were derived from children's responses. Children's level of anxiety was assessed by me

BACKGROUND: To examine the association between anxiety disorders in parents and offspring in a sample of children at risk for panic disorder. We hypothesized that individual anxiety disorders will breed true in offspring.
METHODS: Comparisons were made between offspring of parents with PD+MD (N=136), PD (N=27), MD (N=27), and Controls (N=103). All subjects were assessed with structured diagnostic interviews. Individual anxiety disorders in the offspring were used as dependent variables in logistic regression models where parental PD status, parental MD, and the same parental anxiety diagnosis

One of the major changes in the clinical treatment of anxiety has been the substitution of benzodiazepines for less safe sedative-hypnotic drugs. A second major change has been the finding that antidepressants suppress panic attacks. The evidence for this is reviewed in this paper. It appears that panic anxiety is qualitatively different from other kinds of anxiety; this has important implications for diagnosis and treatment. Other clinical issues presented in this symposium are a review of benzodiazepine and new, non-benzodiazepine anxiolytic drugs, the treatment of separation anxiety, and th

BACKGROUND: Behavioural changes associated with idiopathic epilepsy (IE) have been identified in dogs, with fear and anxiety-related problems seen in both drug-naïve dogs and dogs treated with anti-epileptic drugs (AEDs). Treating anxiety-related behaviour in dogs with IE may be challenging, as seizures are a contraindication for many conventional anxiolytic drugs. In addition, many dogs with IE are already treated with AEDs to reduce their seizure frequency, which may have negative effects if used in polytherapy. Systematic clinical examination, 7 rating scales for severity and the Newcastle Anxiety Depression Scale were applied in 117 patients with depressive, anxiety or phobic neurosis. "Endogenous" (autonomous) depressions were excluded. Principal component and discriminant function analysis were used to determine whether the depressive and anxiety syndromes could be differentiated from each other. With the aid of discriminant function analysis, separation of the 2 groups was achieved in the full sample and in 2 randomly derived sub-samples. The most powerful discriminators in all analyses were the

OBJECTIVE: The primary goal was to determine whether Mission Indian children of alcoholics (COAs) have higher rates of psychiatric disorders than Mission Indian non-COAs. A secondary goal was to explore associations of other familial variables with rates of childhood psychiatric disorders.
METHOD: Psychiatric diagnoses were obtained from the primary caregiver, using the Semi-Structured Assessment for the Genetics of Alcoholism (SSAGA), for 117 (63 female) Mission Indian children; 81 of the children were interviewed directly. Of the 117 subjects, 92 (79%) were COAs and 25 (21%) were not.

Incarcerated women enter the prison setting with remarkable histories of trauma, mental health and substance abuse issues. Given the stress of incarceration and separation from their children, families, and significant others, it is not surprising that many women experience increased anxiety, depression, and problems with sleep. Due to these negative outcomes, it is imperative to find efficient non-pharmacological interventions. This pilot study examined the impact of a 12-week mindfulness based program on the stress, anxiety, depression and sleep of women with a total of 33 completing the stu

Anxiety problems in youth are common, suggesting the need for developmentally appropriate and psychometrically sound measures in this area. The Multidimensional Anxiety Scale for Children (MASC) was created with this goal in mind, but has yet to be examined with samples representative of youth typically seen in clinical settings. Two hundred and sixty-two outpatient youth with mixed clinical presentations completed the MASC, a measure that includes a total anxiety score, as well as subscale scores for social anxiety, harm avoidance, separation anxiety/panic, and physical symptoms of anxiety. Anxiety and hostility scores (Gottschalk-Gleser method of verbal content analysis) were studied in a mixed patient sample comprising psychosomatic, functional, and neurotic patients under two speech-eliciting conditions: monological and dialogical. Hostility scores did not differ between conditions. Mutilation, diffuse and total anxiety scores were significantly higher in interview than in monologue. In this condition, separation anxiety was expressed more often. Some intercorrelations between variables were found in both conditions, mostly involving hostility, while others hold either for mon

Offsprings early separated from their mothers may display depression and anxiety behaviors. The objective of this study is to assess the potential of isorhmanetin, known for its anti-inflammatory and antidepressant properties, in mitigating these behaviors in male mice. The experimental mice underwent a 4-h daily maternal separation from postnatal days 2 to 21. Afterwards, mice were given an intraperitoneal injection of isorhamnetin (20 mg/kg/day) from postnatal day 61 for 4 weeks. At 3 months old, both behavioral evaluations and biochemical analyses were carried out. The findings indicated th
