Cohort profile: the Lebanon Study on Aging and HeAlth (LSAHA).

BACKGROUND: This paper describes the design and cohort profile of the Lebanon Study on Aging and HeAlth (LSAHA), the first population-level study of Alzheimer's Disease and Related Dementias (ADRD) in an Arab country. The burden due to ADRD in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region is among the highest in the world, but reliable population-level data on ADRD in the region are lacking. Older adults in Lebanon have experienced prolonged periods of social and economic instability due to political conflicts and chronic government mismanagement. The effects of these destabilizing experience

Gonorrhea, a current disease with ancient roots: from the remedies of the past to future perspectives.

Gonorrhea can be traced back to the earliest records of the human race even if Albert Neisser first described gonococcus in 1879. The Romans, Jews and Arabs all have documents referring to gonorrhea and each society had their own description of symptoms and treatment. The Roman physician Galen in 130 AD described the disease as an "involuntary escape of semen". The word itself derives from the Greek, meaning "the flow of seed". Gonorrhea is currently the second most commonly notifiable sexually transmitted infection (STI) reported to Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), second onl

[History of opium poppy and morphine].

Opium has been known for millennia to relieve pain and its use for surgical analgesia has been recorded for several centuries. The Sumerian clay tablet (about 2100 BC) is considered to be the world's oldest recorded list of medical prescriptions. It is believed by some scholars that the opium poppy is referred to on the tablet. Some objects from the ancient Greek Minoan culture may also suggest the knowledge of the poppy. A goddess from about 1500 BC shows her hair adorned probably with poppy-capsules and her closed eyes disclose sedation. Also juglets probably imitating the poppy-capsules wer

Caregiver burden and its association with depression, anxiety, and quality of life among caregivers of individuals with severe persistent mental illness in Saudi Arabia: A cross-sectional study.

Caregivers of patients with Severe Persistent Mental Illness (SPMI) face tremendous challenges. They often experience elevated levels of burden, depression, and anxiety. These factors negatively impact their quality of life (QoL). However, few studies have examined caregiver burden and its psychological effects in Saudi Arabia. This study aims to assess caregiver burden in relation to socio-demographic characteristics and its correlation with depression, anxiety, and QoL. The study tool consisted of validated questionnaire, including the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9), Generalized Anxi

The "tract" of history in the treatment of lumbar degenerative disc disease.

In this paper past, present, and future treatments of degenerative disc disease (DDD) of the lumbar spine are outlined in a straight forward manner. This is done to review previous knowledge of the disease, define current treatment procedures, and discuss future perspectives. An analysis of a subject of this magnitude dictates that one describes as accurate a history as possible: an anatomical/historical "tract" with emphasis on all possible deviations. Although spinal disorders have been recognized for a long time, the view of DDD as a particular disease entity is a more recent development. I

Diagnostic potential of extended inflammation parameters for sepsis identification: a retrospective case-control study.

BACKGROUND: An early and accurate diagnosis of sepsis is critical for improving patient outcomes. Extended inflammation parameters (EIPs), derived from routine complete blood count (CBC) analysis, have emerged as promising biomarkers for inflammatory response. This study aimed to explore the diagnostic potential of a model combining several EIPs for identifying sepsis in a case-control setting. PARTICIPANTS AND METHODS: A retrospective, single-center, case-control study was conducted at Tawam Hospital, AlAin, United Arab Emirates involving 157 participants; 53 patients with confirmed sepsis p

There are three main forms of leishmaniasis: cutaneous, mucocutaneous and visceral leishmaniasis. Cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) has become an increasing problem as the number of travels around the world increases and people go to work in endemic areas. Turkey has received great numbers of immigrants in recent years, from its neighboring countries like Iraq, Islamic Republic of Iran, Afghanistan, Turkmenistan and the Syrian Arab Republic because of the political

Aberrant face and gaze habituation in fragile x syndrome.

Omphacinon, the oil from unripe olives (Olea europaea L.), occupied a privileged position in Mediterranean materia medica from the Hellenistic period to the late Middle Ages. Sources in Greek, Latin, Aramaic, Hebrew, and Arabic record its use in oral hygiene, dermatological care, antiperspirant preparations, and as a base for medicinal ointments and perfumes; Dioscorides identifies it as the oil best suited to medicinal use. Despite cost and lower yield, ancient practitioners preferred unripe fruit. A preference persisting across more than a millennium and across different medical traditions r
