Background: Spinal arachnoid cysts are rarely occurring benign cerebrospinal fluid-containing lesions that can occur anywhere along the spinal axis but are principally seen in the thoracic spine. They occur either ventrally or dorsally and can be extradural, intradural extramedullary, or intramedullary. They may be asymptomatic or can present with insidious pain and neurologic symptoms related to spinal cord and/or nerve root compression. Case Report: A 49-year-old male developed sudden midback pain with rapid progression to gait instability, urinary retention, and paraplegia within 10 hours.

BACKGROUND CONTEXT: Secondary spinal arachnoid cysts have rarely been reported but present significant challenges for management. These cysts could be anteriorly located with long rostral-caudal extensions and many are related to arachnoiditis, leading to difficult-to-treat disorders. Thus far, due to the scarcity of reports, the features of the disease and the optimal therapeutic strategies remain unclear.
PURPOSE: To investigate clinical features and the optimal treatment modalities of secondary spinal arachnoid cysts compared with primary spinal arachnoid cysts.

OBJECTIVE: The role of surgical management of arachnoid cyst (AC) of the cerebellopontine angle (CPA) is uncertain. This topic has remained controversial with varying contradictory recommendations in the literature, which is limited to mostly case reports. We aimed to provide a comprehensive summary and analysis of symptoms, operative techniques, outcomes, and recurrence of all available surgical cases of AC of the CPA to date.
METHODS: A systematic literature search was performed in May 2022 querying several scientific databases. Inclusion criteria specified all studies and case reports of p

OBJECTIVE: Symptomatic sacral arachnoid cysts are extremely rare in pediatric patients, resulting in a lack of consensus regarding optimal treatment measures. The current study evaluated the clinical symptoms and surgical indications, techniques, and outcomes of pediatric patients who underwent treatment for sacral arachnoid cysts with the aim of developing recommendations for follow-up and treatment.
METHODS: This retrospective study included pediatric patients who underwent surgical treatment for sacral arachnoid cysts between January 2000 and December 2020 at the Department of Pediatric Ne

Arachnoid cysts are frequent incidental findings on brain scans. Traditionally, they are regarded as harmless, congenital structures which do not require surgical treatment. In the rare cases where surgery is indicated it can be due to haemorrhage, hydrocephalus or cranial nerve affection caused by the cyst. However, recent literature suggests a correlation between arachnoid cysts and cognitive and affective symptoms. The hypothesised pathomechanisms include pressure, affected neuronal or glial metabolism and inflammation. If this is correct a more active approach might benefit the patients as

BACKGROUND: Intradural cysts of the spine are arachnoid cysts, neuroenteric cysts, and ependymal cysts. The usual finding in case of a neurenteric cyst is a ventrally located non-contrast-enhancing lesion that is isointense on T1-weighted sequence and hyperintense on T2-weighted imaging. An arachnoid cyst is hypointense in T1-weighted image and hyperintense in T2-weighted image, mimicking cerebrospinal fluid(CSF), and the location is dorsal to the cord. But a neurenteric cyst can mimic an arachnoid cyst in appearance.

OBJECTIVE: Arachnoid cysts (ACs) are frequent incidental findings and may be associated with neuropsychiatric symptoms. Usually growth of the ACs with pressure on adjacent brain tissue is regarded as cause of the symptoms. This study was undertaken to identify if and which ACs grow with time.
METHODS: We used a large database of cranial MRIs for a retrospective analysis.
RESULTS: During a period of 10 years, we collected 166 ACs of 50 persons, mean observational period was 2.5 years. Among these, only larger cysts at the temporal pole, i.e., Galassi II ACs, grew with a rate of 0.3 ml a year

BACKGROUND: Sellar arachnoid cysts (SACs) are rare lesions and incidentally found on brain imaging. The pathophysiology is poorly understood. Some authors suggested that SACs develop as a herniation of arachnoid membrane through the diaphragma sellae followed by cyst formation. Furthermore, Meyer et al. postulated that SACs are formed by splitting of the arachnoid layers. Symptomatic SACs present with headache, visual field deficit, or pituitary dysfunction. The data are limited on the indications and timing for intervention. We present a case of symptomatic SAC that was fenestrated using orbi

PURPOSE: The aim of this article was to study the significance of arachnoid granulations (AGs) in patients with idiopathic intracranial hypertension (IIH).
METHODS: In an institutional review board-approved retrospective chart review study, 79 patients with clinical diagnosis of idiopathic increased intracranial pressure were compared with 63 patients with a diagnosis of multiple sclerosis. Inclusion criteria also included available magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the brain, older than 18 years, and female sex. Patients with elevated intracranial pressure due to other causes were excluded

BACKGROUND: Retinal optical coherence tomography (OCT) is a noninvasive high-resolution imaging technique, which is considered a biomarker of neurodegeneration. Several intracranial lesions can induce retrograde neurodegeneration which can be assessed using OCT. The cysts of the pineal region are usually asymptomatic and most often are an incidental radiologic finding.
CASE DESCRIPTION: We describe the case of a 50-year-old woman with an arachnoid cyst of the pineal region who complained of visual symptoms for 3 months. Bilateral macular thinning was demonstrated by OCT both on the preoperati

BACKGROUND: Kallmann syndrome (KS) is defined by the association of hypogonadotropic hypogonadism and anosmia. It is characterized by a significant clinical and genetic heterogeneity; actually, it may present several non-reproductive non-olfactory anomalies, and all the ways of genetic transmission can be involved in the inheritance of the disease. Although six pathogenesis-related genes have been identified so far, KS remains sporadic in 70 % of the cases, and the genetic diagnosis is not available for all of them. The purpose of this paper is to present a further disease that can enrich the

Intradural spinal arachnoid cysts are a relatively uncommon lesion that may be either intra, or extradural, and intradural spinal arachnoid cysts are even less common. Arachnoid cysts are cerebrospinal fluid collections in the spine that can present with neurological symptoms. The objective of this paper is to describe a rare case of radicular pain due to a spinal arachnoid cyst.

Spinal arachnoid cysts (AC) are intraspinal extramedullary loculated cerebral spinal fluid collections. They are relatively uncommon lesions. Spinal AC often cause symptoms such as pain, weakness and radiculopathy. In this pictorial essay we demonstrate the main radiological features of spinal AC, as well as symptoms and complications associated with them. We also describe the main differential diagnoses.

BACKGROUND: Sellar/suprasellar cystic lesions can cause compression of the optic pathways and result in a decline in vision. There have been reports of optic pathways being fenestrated by intracranial aneurysms. This is the first report of a sellar/suprasellar arachnoid cyst causing fenestration of an optic nerve.
CASE DESCRIPTION: Our patient presented with an 8-month history of worsening vision. Imaging revealed a sellar/suprasellar cystic lesion with compression of the optic pathways. He was treated surgically via an endoscopic transsphenoidal approach. The left optic nerve was found to ha

INTRODUCTION: Suprasellar arachnoid cysts can differ from other arachnoid cysts in several ways, making a separate analysis of these cysts worthwhile. Herein, we present the outcome and perform volumetric analysis of six children with suprasellar arachnoid cysts treated with endoscopic ventriculocystocisternostomy in order to evaluate the long-term outcomes.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Operative and postoperative data were retrospectively reviewed for six patients harboring suprasellar arachnoid cysts. Imaging was then used to follow success of surgical intervention.
RESULTS: Six patients with sup
