Offspring birthweight and placental weight in immigrant women from conflict-zone countries; does length of residence in the host country matter? A population study in Norway.

INTRODUCTION: We aimed to estimate differences in offspring birthweight and placental weight between Norwegian women and immigrants in Norway from countries with armed conflicts. We also studied whether length of residence in Norway was associated with offspring birthweight and placental weight. MATERIAL AND METHODS: We included in our study all singleton births in Norway at gestational week 28 or beyond during the years 1999-2014, to mothers who were born in Somalia, Afghanistan, Iraq (total immigrants n = 18 817), or Norway (n = 668 439). Data were obtained from The Medical Birth Registry o…

An anesthesiological approach to nerve agent victims.

The potential use of weapons of mass destruction has recently become a real threat even in the areas of ongoing armed conflicts. Mass casualty victims can suffer from psychological and physical trauma. The exposure of physically injured patients to a toxic substance, in a scenario of mass injury, has recently gained major attention among planners of future protocols for emergency medical services. Because rapid deterioration and multiorgan involvement are to be expected after physical injuries, proper organization and complex but efficient acute medical care systems must be organized and deplo…

The interaction of projectiles with tissues and the management of ballistic fractures.

Wounds to the limbs are the commonest injuries seen during armed conflict and injury results from the transfer of energy from the missile to the tissues. There are a number of factors that determine the transfer of energy, and thus the extent of wounding. These include the velocity of the missile, its shape and stability, and the tissue through which the missile passes. Many of the wounds involve bone, and because of the interaction of missiles with bone, significant fractures can occur. In many previous conflicts amputation was considered the treatment of choice for many limb injuries, but wi

Introduction to the Special Issue on Wars and Disasters: Advancing Care during Times of Crisis.

Civilian mass-casualty disasters and armed conflict share many features, including the fact that both maximally challenge multidisciplinary burn teams. Rigorous training is required to build teams and systems that can respond effectively. One of the critical but potentially overlooked components of readiness for crisis care is a robust clinical research program. Rather than stalling progress, disasters and conflict over the last 100 years consistently energized advances in care. This was made possible by the hard work of our predecessors to learn from the crisis in the midst of the crisis, and

Getting patients back for routine colorectal cancer screening: Randomized controlled trial of a shared decision-making intervention.

Thousands of colonoscopies were canceled during the initial surge of the COVID-19 pandemic. As facilities resumed services, some patients were hesitant to reschedule. The purpose of this study was to determine whether a decision aid plus telephone coaching would increase colorectal cancer (CRC) screening and improve patient reports of shared decision making (SDM). A randomized controlled trial assigned adults aged 45-75 without prior history of CRC who had a colonoscopy canceled from March to May 2020 to intervention (n = 400) or usual care control (n = 400) arms. The intervention arm received

Community engagement and integrated health and polio immunisation campaigns in conflict-affected areas of Pakistan: a cluster randomised controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Pakistan faces huge challenges in eradicating polio due to widespread poliovirus transmission and security challenges. Innovative interventions are urgently needed to strengthen community buy-in, to increase the coverage of oral polio vaccine (OPV) and other routine immunisations, and to enhance immunity through the introduction of inactivated polio vaccine (IPV) in combination with OPV. We aimed to evaluate the acceptability and effect on immunisation coverage of an integrated strategy for community engagement and maternal and child health immunisation campaigns in insecure and co

Between bullets and outbreaks: epidemic control in Sudan's forgotten war.

Two years into Sudan's prolonged war, the collapse of health systems has fueled multiple concurrent epidemics, triggering a complex humanitarian emergency with regional spillover risks. Over 30 million people need aid, more than 11 million displaced internally, and cross-border movement has exacerbated the spread of vaccine-preventable diseases, including Cholera, Measles, and circulating vaccine-derived Poliovirus type 2 (cVDPV2). This review analyzes emerging epidemiological patterns and operational barriers to epidemic control in the context of armed conflict, displacement, and infrastructu

Post-traumatic stress disorder in youth exposed to the Syrian conflict: A systematic review and meta-analysis of prevalence and determinants.

A decade of ongoing armed conflict in Syria has damaged the physical and mental health of millions of adults and children. This study aimed to systematically review the prevalence of post-traumatic stress disorder among youth exposed to the Syrian conflict, and understand its individual and contextual determinants. The screening procedure resulted in 26 studies, with a total of 11,400 Syrian children and adolescents. The prevalence was 36% (95% CI (0.29-0.43), p < 0.001). Loss of family members or acquaintances, witnessing violence, and social withdrawal increased the risk of post-traumatic st

Initial management of haemorrhagic war casualties: tactical priorities and innovative approaches in modern and future warfare.

BACKGROUND: Haemorrhage remains the leading cause of preventable death in modern armed conflict, affecting both combatants and civilians. Recent conflicts-particularly the ongoing conflict in Ukraine- have highlighted the increasing complexity of battlefield injuries, characterised by hybrid warfare, disrupted evacuation chains, and delayed access to definitive surgical care. These realities challenge traditional trauma paradigms, such as the "Golden Hour" and demand adaptation of haemorrhage control and resuscitation strategies to austere environment. CONTENT: This narrative review synthesiz

A cross-sectional study of the burden and risk factors of impetigo and scabies among children during conflict in the middle area of the Gaza strip.

Impetigo and scabies, highly contagious skin infections, proliferate in the overcrowded and unhygienic conditions exacerbated by conflict. This cross-sectional study analyzed the demographic, environmental, and WaSH-related determinants of these infections among children in the middle area of the Gaza strip during its humanitarian crisis. The study was conducted between July and November 2024. Participants were recruited through a mixed non-probability sampling strategy combining systematic screening in displacement shelters and consecutive recruitment from red crescent dermatology clinics. [The importance of a transcultural clinical approach in the context of traumatic migration].

The transcultural dimension must necessarily be taken into account in the diagnosis of psychiatric disorders, as shown by the case of a young immigrant woman whose request for clinical care is motivated by an anxiety-depressive state that she explains by difficulties in adapting to a poorly mastered cultural disparity. This situation reveals that her difficulties are the expression of acculturation and post-traumatic stress inherent in war trauma.

Pharmacists on the frontline: Medication misuse and abuse during violent conflict in four MENA countries.

PURPOSE: An important, yet under-researched, impact of violent conflict on public health is the susceptibility of populations in conflicts to drug abuse and misuse as increased stress, the easy availability of drugs, and the relaxation of taboos against drug use exacerbate the problem. This study explores the experiences of pharmacists regarding drug misuse and abuse in four conflict-affected MENA countries. METHODS: The study is part of a larger two-year (2021-2023) project investigating the impact of violent conflict in the MENA region on medicine abuse and misuse and the experiences of pha
