Dr. ChatGPT: Utilizing Artificial Intelligence in Surgical Education.

OBJECTIVE: This study sought to explore the unexamined capabilities of ChatGPT in describing the surgical steps of a specialized operation, the Fisher cleft lip repair. DESIGN: A chat log within ChatGPT was created to generate the procedural steps of a cleft lip repair utilizing the Fisher technique. A board certified craniomaxillofacial (CMF) surgeon then wrote the Fisher repair in his own words blinded to the ChatGPT response. Using both responses, a voluntary survey questionnaire was distributed to residents of plastic and reconstructive surgery (PRS), general surgery (GS), internal medici

Artificial intelligence-enhanced epileptic seizure detection by wearables.

OBJECTIVE: Wrist- or ankle-worn devices are less intrusive than the widely used electroencephalographic (EEG) systems for monitoring epileptic seizures. Using custom-developed deep-learning seizure detection models, we demonstrate the detection of a broad range of seizure types by wearable signals. METHODS: Patients admitted to the epilepsy monitoring unit were enrolled and asked to wear wearable sensors on either wrists or ankles. We collected patients' electrodermal activity, accelerometry (ACC), and photoplethysmography, from which blood volume pulse (BVP) is derived. Board-certified epile

Artificial Intelligence and Glaucoma: Going Back to Basics.

There has been a recent surge in the number of publications centered on the use of artificial intelligence (AI) to diagnose various systemic diseases. The Food and Drug Administration has approved several algorithms for use in clinical practice. In ophthalmology, most advances in AI relate to diabetic retinopathy, which is a disease process with agreed upon diagnostic and classification criteria. However, this is not the case for glaucoma, which is a relatively complex disease without agreed-upon diagnostic criteria. Moreover, currently available public datasets that focus on glaucoma have inc…

Artificial intelligence in sleep medicine: Present and future.

Artificial intelligence (AI) has impacted many areas of healthcare. AI in healthcare uses machine learning, deep learning, and natural language processing to analyze copious amounts of healthcare data and yield valuable outcomes. In the sleep medicine field, a large amount of physiological data is gathered compared to other branches of medicine. This field is primed for innovations with the help of AI. A good quality of sleep is crucial for optimal health. About one billion people are estimated to have obstructive sleep apnea worldwide, but it is difficult to diagnose and treat all the people …

Artificial intelligence for endoscopy in inflammatory bowel disease.

Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), with its 2 subtypes, Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis, is a complex chronic condition. A precise definition of disease activity and appropriate drug management greatly improve the clinical course while minimizing the risk or cost. Artificial intelligence (AI) has been used in several medical diseases or situations. Herein, we provide an overview of AI for endoscopy in IBD. We discuss how AI can improve clinical practice and how some components have already begun to shape our knowledge. There may be a time when we can use AI in clinical practice. As AI sy…

Application of artificial intelligence in brain molecular imaging.

Initial development of artificial Intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) dates back to the mid-twentieth century. A growing awareness of the potential for AI, as well as increases in computational resources, research, and investment are rapidly advancing AI applications to medical imaging and, specifically, brain molecular imaging. AI/ML can improve imaging operations and decision making, and potentially perform tasks that are not readily possible by physicians, such as predicting disease prognosis, and identifying latent relationships from multi-modal clinical information. The number of …

Artificial intelligence for quality control of oscillometry measures.

BACKGROUND: The forced oscillation technique (FOT) allows non-invasive lung function testing during quiet breathing even without expert guidance. However, it still relies on an operator for excluding breaths with artefacts such as swallowing, glottis closure and coughing. This manual selection is operator-dependent and time-consuming. We evaluated supervised machine learning methods to exclude breaths with artefacts from data analysis automatically. METHODS: We collected 932 FOT measurements (Resmon Pro Full, Restech) from 155 patients (6-87 years) following the European Respiratory Society (
