The combination of platelets and anidulafungin at 0.03 μg/ml significantly (P < 0.05) reduced the germination rate and hyphal elongation in Aspergillus fumigatus compared to those with either anidulafungin only or an untreated control. Platelets decreased the expression of the fks gene, which plays an important role in cell wall synthesis. Our results suggest that human platelets plus anidulafungin might contribute to defense against A. fumigatus.

The utility of serum Aspergillus antigen in invasive aspergillosis was determined by identifying patients with >50 ng/mL Aspergillus carbohydrate antigen by ELISA. Patients were identified from a university hospital over a 65-month period. A 72-year-old, non-insulin-dependent diabetic man with a 2-month history of painful right olecranon bursitis was examined after a fall on the sidewalk that resulted in some abrasion of the skin overlying the elbow. Fluid aspirated from the bursa showed growth of Aspergillus terreus, as did tissue from a bursectomy performed 1 week later. Septic bursitis is an uncommon disease that is nearly always caused by Staphylococcus aureus or hemolytic streptococci. Mycotic bursitis is very rare and this is the first reported instance of any Aspergillus species causing septic bursitis.

Disseminated aspergillosis due to Aspergillus terreus was diagnosed in a young pigeon kept by a bird fancier. The fungus was isolated in heavy growth from the infected tissues on Sabouraud medium at 37 degrees C. Microscopic examination of the squeeze preparation of the air sacs revealed the presence of typical conidiophores of an Aspergillus sp.
