Low-Energy Lisfranc Injuries in an Athletic Population: A Comprehensive Review of the Literature and the Role of Minimally Invasive Techniques in Their Management.

Tarsometatarsal (TMT) joint complex injuries can be caused by either direct or indirect injuries. The Lisfranc joint represents approximately 0.2% of all fractures. Up to 20% of these injuries are misdiagnosed or missed on initial radiographic assessment; therefore, a high index of suspicion is needed to accurately diagnose TMT joint injuries and avoid the late sequelae of substantial midfoot arthrosis, pain, decreased function, and loss of quality of life. This review discusses the anatomy, diagnosis, and management of athletic Lisfranc injuries, including a description of the preferred minim

Physeal stress injury in youth athletes: upper extremity imaging findings.

Sports participation among children predisposes the immature skeleton to unique patterns of injury. In contrast to the mature skeleton, the growth plates of the immature skeleton are biomechanically vulnerable sites of weakness, susceptible to not only acute traumatic but also repetitive overuse injuries. This latter pattern of injury, better known as physeal stress injuries (PSIs), has received increased attention, because undiagnosed and untreated injuries can result in long-term morbidity and risk for future growth disturbance, particularly when involving the physis underlying the epiphysis

Bidirectional Interplay Between Traumatic Brain Injury and Cardiovascular Dysfunction in Athletes.

Sports-associated traumatic brain injury is emerging as an under-recognized driver of acute and chronic cardiovascular diseases. Larger population-based studies show that individuals with moderate-to-severe traumatic brain injury experience up to a two-fold excess risk of incident hypertension, coronary artery disease, myocardial infarction, and stroke that persists for at least a decade. Among former professional American-style football players, a higher lifetime concussion burden is uniquely related to a more atherogenic cardiometabolic profile and greater long-term stroke risk. Mechanistica
