Skydiving: The audiological perspective.

Skydiving is a popular recreational sport for the young and old. There is minimal research pertaining to skydiving and its relation to the a … inclusion of safety measures and risks in the documentation and legislation that governs the sport. Audiologists, sportspeople and medical advisors should be cognisant of the negative consequences that may be evident within the auditory system of skydivers.

Newborn Hearing Screening in Bavaria-Is It Possible to Reach the Quality Parameters?

Since the 1 January, 2009, newborn hearing screening (NHS) has been obligatory for every child in Germany. NHS is part of the Pediatrics Directive of the Federal Joint Committee. In this directive, details of the procedures and screening quality to be achieved are given. We evaluate if these quality criteria were met in Bavaria in 2016. The NHS data of children born in 2016 in Bavaria were evaluated for quality criteria, such as screening coverage in screening facilities, screening methods, referral rate (rate of failed tests at discharge) and a child's age at the diagnosis of a hearing disord

Self-Administered Tinnitus Pitch Matching versus a Conventional Audiometric Procedure.

OBJECTIVE: Obtaining an accurate tinnitus pitch match is an initial and critical requirement for tinnitus evaluation and treatment, particularly for applying tailor-made notched music training. We investigated whether computer-based self-administered tinnitus pitch matching (CSTPM) is comparable with a conventional audiometric procedure (CAP). METHODS: In total, 82 patients (mean age 45.52 years; 42 females) with tonal tinnitus participated. The CAP was performed by the same audiologist using a 2-alternative forced choice method with a frequency range of 0.25-16 kHz. In the CSTPM, the subject

Delayed diagnosis of a patient with Usher syndrome 1C in a Louisiana Acadian family highlights the necessity of timely genetic testing for the diagnosis and management of congenital hearing loss.

Advances in sequencing technologies and increased understanding of the contribution of genetics to congenital sensorineural hearing loss hav … ing the proper interventions to improve their quality of life. Collaboration between pediatricians, audiologists, otolaryngologists, geneticists, and other specialists are essential in the diagnosis and management of patients with hearing disorders. An early diagnosis is vital for proper management and care, as some clinical manifestations of syndromic sensori …

Amblyaudia: Review of Pathophysiology, Clinical Presentation, and Treatment of a New Diagnosis.

OBJECTIVE: Similar to amblyopia in the visual system, "amblyaudia" is a term used to describe persistent hearing difficulty experienced by i … n and timely management of reversible causes of AHL. IMPLICATIONS FOR PRACTICE: Otolaryngologists, audiologists, and pediatricians should be aware of emerging data supporting amblyaudia as a diagnostic entity and be cognizant of the potential for lasting consequences of AHL. Prevention of long-term auditory deficits may be possible through rapid identificatio …

A Bayesian perspective on tinnitus pitch matching.

OBJECTIVES: New tinnitus therapies are being developed and marketed that target the patient's tinnitus frequency. This frequency is estimated clinically by pitch matching, which has the patient identify the pure tone that is closest to the perceived tinnitus frequency. Though widely used, pitch matching is heavily criticized as unreliable, and the degree of reliability varies among patients. At the very least, it is recommended that multiple pitch matches be used to identify the patient's tinnitus frequency. Even so, it is not clear how many pitch matches to collect, how they should be combine

Cochlear implants in deaf children.

OBJECTIVE: This investigation was aimed to determine the current status of sensorineural hearing loss in children from the provinces of the Kingdom Saudi Arabia and to report on those with severe to profound hearing loss who are in need of cochlear implant. METHODS: A comprehensive survey of 9540 Saudi children was carried out from September 1997 through to May 2000. The subjects were randomly selected from the 4 main provinces of the country. The main objective was to screen these children for hearing impairment. A survey team included an ear, nose and throat specialist, a nurse, a social wo

Loudness discomfort levels at extended high frequencies in young adults: A potential marker of hyperacusis.

Loudness discomfort levels (LDLs) are typically measured only at standard frequencies (0.25-8 kHz), which may limit their diagnostic utility … s study provides the first report of LDLs for EHF in a large cohort and is a valuable reference for audiologists. These findings suggest that EHF measures could improve the diagnosis of loudness related disorders such as hyperacusis, supporting early identification and tailored interventions. Further research is needed to fully assess the clinical value of EHF …

Transducer Variability in Speech-in-Noise Testing: Considerations Related to Stimulus Bandwidth.

PURPOSE: Clinical audiologists typically assume that headphones and insert phones will produce comparable results when they are used to conduct speech-in-noise or other audiological tests; however, this may not always be the case. Here, we show that there are significant differences in the scores that previous studies have reported for headphone and insert-phone transducers on the Words-in-Noise (WIN) Test, and discuss the possibility that the variations in high-frequency output that are allowable under the speech source specifications of American National Standards Institute S3.6 might be con…
