Integrated analysis of human-animal-vector surveillance: West Nile virus infections in Austria, 2015-2016.

The results of integrated human and veterinary surveillance for West Nile virus (WNV) infections in Austria during the transmission seasons 2015 and 2016 are shown. Altogether WNV nucleic acid was detected in 21 humans, horses, wild birds and mosquito pools. In detail: in four human clinical cases [two cases of West Nile fever (WNF) and two cases of West Nile neuroinvasive disease (WNND)]; eight blood donors [among 145,541 tested donations], of which three remained asymptomatic and five subsequently developed mild WNF; two horses with WNND, of which one recovered and one had to be euthanized; …

West Nile virus lineage 2 infection in a blood donor from Vienna, Austria, August 2014.

Eastern Austria is neighbouring regions with ongoing West Nile virus (WNV) transmissions. Three human WNV infections had been diagnosed during the past decade in Austria. The Austrian Red Cross Blood Service (ARC-BS) started a first voluntary screening for WNV in blood donors from Eastern Austria by Nucleic Acid Testing (NAT) in June 2014. This is also the most extensive WNV surveillance programme in humans in Austria so far. In August 2014, one autochthonous WNV infection was detected in a blood donor from Vienna. By now, one in 67,800 whole blood donations was found to be positive for WNV RN…

Sport injuries and illnesses during the first Winter Youth Olympic Games 2012 in Innsbruck, Austria.

BACKGROUND: Data on the injury and illness risk among young elite athletes are of utmost importance, because injuries and illnesses can counter the beneficial effects of sports participation at a young age, if children or adolescents are unable to continue to participate because of residual effects of injury or chronic illness. OBJECTIVE: To analyse the frequencies and characteristics of injuries and illnesses during the 2012 Innsbruck Winter Youth Olympic Games (IYOG). METHODS: We employed the International Olympic Committee (IOC) injury surveillance system for multisport events, which was

A potential novel Brucella species isolated from mandibular lymph nodes of red foxes in Austria.

The wild red fox (Vulpes vulpes) is a known indicator species for natural foci of brucellosis. Here, we describe phenotypic and molecular characteristics of two atypical Brucella strains isolated from two foxes hunted 2008 in Eastern Austria. Both strains agglutinated with monospecific anti-Brucella A serum and were positive in ELISA with monoclonal antibodies directed against various Brucella lipopolysaccharide epitopes. However, negative nitrate reductase- and negative oxidase-reaction were atypical traits. Affiliation to the genus Brucella was confirmed by 16S rRNA gene sequencing and by de…

The original Gerstmann-Sträussler-Scheinker family of Austria: divergent clinicopathological phenotypes but constant PrP genotype.

We present new data on the original Austrian kindred with Gerstmann-Sträussler-Scheinker disease (GSS) which encompasses currently 221 members in 9 generations. The mode of inheritance is autosomal dominant. Predominant clinical features are slowly progressive ataxia and late impairment of higher cerebral functions. In contrast, a recent case with proven P102L mutation of the PRNP gene had rapidly developing dementia and severe cortical damage indistinguishable from the clinicopathological phenotype of Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD). PRNP codon 129 was homozygous for methionine in both the hi…

Curative justice: Epistemic contestations of health in the case of type 1 diabetes and hepatitis C in Austria.

Within the remit of so-called Western biomedicine, ideas of "targeted therapies"-like the "magic bullet" imagined by Paul Ehrlich over 100 years ago-act as powerful socio-medical imaginaries and reference points: entailed in such hopes, promises, and expectations is the idea of a treatment that fixes the disease for good without causing further harms. We analyze how this powerful imaginary and its enactment in practice may affect the implementation and lived experience of innovative therapies in Austria. We draw on a total of 60 qualitative interviews and two years of ethnographic research fro…

The ongoing challenge of Clostridioides difficile infection in Austria: economic evaluation of two recommended treatment pathways.

OBJECTIVES: Clostridioides difficile (CD) is a major nosocomial pathogen causing severe and potentially life-threatening infections, particularly following disruption of gut microbiota. Transmission occurs via resilient spores through the fecal-oral route. While most infections originate in hospitals or long-term care facilities, 20-30% are community-acquired. In Austria, national surveillance data report 769 severe CDI cases in 2024, indicating a substantial disease burden. This analysis compares two treatment scenarios: (1) the pathway recommended by the Austrian Society of Gastroenterology …

Evaluating physicians' knowledge of assisted suicide and palliative sedation therapy in Austria : An exploratory survey study.

BACKGROUND: Since January 2022, assisted suicide (AS) has been legal in Austria under specific conditions, allowing medical AS for individuals with incurable, life-ending diseases or severe, enduring illnesses that significantly impact their lives. Palliative sedation therapy (PST) involves the controlled use of drugs to induce unconsciousness and alleviate otherwise untreatable suffering. This study evaluates Austrian physicians' knowledge of AS and PST, comparing the knowledge levels of palliative care (PC) and non-PC physicians. METHODS: In this explorative study, an online survey was dist…

Psychometric properties of the ICECAP-SCM capability-wellbeing measure in specialist palliative care units in Austria.

PURPOSE: Patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) with robust psychometric properties are key for healthcare and resource allocation decisions. Palliative Care (PC) presents challenges for PROM assessment including its holistic scope, patients’ poor health and uncertainty about suitable PROMs to capture the value of PC. The ICECAP-SCM capability-wellbeing questionnaire was developed for economic evaluations in PC but its psychometric information is limited. This study assessed the comparative validity of ICECAP-SCM in Austrian specialist PC settings. METHODS: The PallPROMs cohort study collec…

Biodegradable plastics - Where to throw? A life cycle assessment of waste collection and management pathways in Austria.

The current waste management systems are struggling to optimally handle biodegradable plastics (BDPs) and are facing numerous challenges; one of which is the consumer confusion about how to best source-segregate BDPs. Based on an environmental life-cycle assessment, this study investigated the consequences of collecting BDPs in one of three waste streams (packaging waste, biowaste, and residual waste) in Austria. Collecting BDPs as (i) packaging waste resulted in incineration (SP1) or mechanical recycling (SP2), (ii) biowaste resulted in composting (SB1) or anaerobic digestion (AD) (SB2), and …
