Control of the nasal mucosa by the tonic activities of the autonomic nervous system in dogs.

We studied the effects of stimulation and acute denervation of the cervical sympathetic nerve and the vidian nerve on the nasal vascular tone, as measured by intranasal balloon pressure. Significant vasoconstriction was found during electrical stimulation of the cervical sympathetic nerve. When the cervical sympathetic nerve was sectioned, causing a transient vasoconstriction due to the stimulatory effect of the nerve injury, then significant vasodilation was found in 23 out of 30 experiments. Significant vasodilation during electrical stimulation of the vidian nerve and slight but significant

Influence of autonomic nervous system on relaxant action of bisphenol A in porcine myometrium.

The mechanism of action of bisphenol A (BPA) in the myometrium has not been fully understood, which is why an attempt was made to determine the involvement of the key mechanisms (cholinergic, adrenergic and non-cholinergic/non-adrenergic) that regulate the uterine contractile activity in the relaxant effect of this BPA in cyclic gilts. Strips of myometrium were incubated for 15 min with the Krebs-Ringer solution (K-Rs), acetylcholine (ACh), atropine, epinephrine, phentolamine, bupranolol, sodium nitroprusside (SNP), methylene blue (MB) or N-ω-nitro L-arginine methyl ester hydrochloride (L-NAME

Chronic Stress and Headaches: The Role of the HPA Axis and Autonomic Nervous System.

Chronic stress significantly influences the pathogenesis of headache disorders, affecting millions worldwide. This review explores the intricate relationship between stress and headaches, focusing on the dysregulation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis and autonomic nervous system (ANS). Persistent stress could lead to neuroinflammation, increased pain sensitivity, and vascular changes that could contribute to headache development and progression. The bidirectional nature of this relationship creates a vicious cycle, with recurrent headaches becoming a source of additional stress…

Effect of neuromodulation for chronic pain on the autonomic nervous system: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: In recent years, there has been a growing interest in the use of neuromodulation as an alternative treatment option for chronic pain. Neuromodulation techniques, such as spinal cord stimulation (SCS), dorsal root ganglion (DRG) stimulation, deep brain stimulation (DBS), and peripheral nerve stimulation, have shown promising results in the management of various chronic pain conditions and involve targeted modulation of neural activity to alleviate pain and restore functional capacity. The autonomic nervous system (ANS) plays a crucial role in the regulation of various bodily functio…

Effects of Light-at-Night on the Rat Liver - A Role for the Autonomic Nervous System.

Exposure to light at night (LAN) has been associated with serious pathologies, including obesity, diabetes and cancer. Recently we showed that 2 h of LAN impaired glucose tolerance in rats. Several studies have suggested that the autonomic nervous system (ANS) plays an important role in communicating these acute effects of LAN to the periphery. Here, we investigated the acute effects of LAN on the liver transcriptome of male Wistar rats. Expression levels of individual genes were not markedly affected by LAN, nevertheless pathway analysis revealed clustered changes in a number of endocrine pat…

The impact of oxaliplatin-based chemotherapy for colorectal cancer on the autonomous nervous system.

BACKGROUND: The oxaliplatin (ΟΧΑ)-based regimens FOLFOX and XELOX can cause peripheral neuropathy. It is unknown if ΟΧΑ, alone or in combination regimens, affects the Autonomous Nervous System (ANS). Accordingly, we evaluated the impact of ΟΧΑ-based chemotherapy on the ANS. METHODS: We enrolled 36 patients with colorectal cancer, treated with adjuvant mFOLFOX6 or XELOX chemotherapy, and 22 healthy volunteers. For the assessment of ANS function, participants completed a questionnaire and underwent neurophysiological examination at three time points (baseline, 3-4 months and 6-8 months after th

Dysregulation of the autonomous nervous system in patients with temporomandibular disorder: a pupillometric study.

The role of the autonomic nervous system (ANS) was recently investigated in Temporomandibular disorders (TMD). Several authors argue that in subjects with TMD there is a dysregulation of ANS. Recent literature support that Pupillometry is a simple non-invasive tool to study ANS. The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between TMD and ANS activity using pupillometry recording in Infrared light at rest Mandible Position (RP); Infrared light at Forced Habitual Occlusion (FHO); Yellow-green light at RP; Yellow-green light at FHO. Forty female subjects were enrolled: 20 case patie…

The role of the autonomic nervous system in hypertension: a bond graph model study.

A bond graph model of the cardiovascular system with embedded autonomic nervous regulation was developed for a better understanding of the role of the autonomic nervous system (ANS) in hypertension. The model is described by a pump model of the heart and a detailed representation of the head and neck, pulmonary, coronary, abdomen and extremity circulation. It responds to sympathetic and parasympathetic activities by modifying systemic peripheral vascular resistance, heart rate, ventricular end-systolic elastance and venous unstressed volumes. The impairment of ANS is represented by an elevatio…

Role of the autonomic nervous system in the reduced maximal cardiac output at altitude.

After acclimatization to high altitude, maximal exercise cardiac output (QT) is reduced. Possible contributing factors include 1) blood volume depletion, 2) increased blood viscosity, 3) myocardial hypoxia, 4) altered autonomic nervous system (ANS) function affecting maximal heart rate (HR), and 5) reduced flow demand from reduced muscle work capability. We tested the role of the ANS reduction of HR in this phenomenon in five normal subjects by separately blocking the sympathetic and parasympathetic arms of the ANS during maximal exercise after 2-wk acclimatization at 3,800 m to alter maximal …

The development of the peripheral autonomic nervous system in relation to the gastro-intestinal tract.

In this study the development of vagus nerves and the development of sympathetic nerves related to the development of the upper gastro-intestinal tract was studied in the rat from 12.5 days p.c. until birth by means of enzyme histochemical methods applied to sections and toto preparations. A striking time relation between the ingrowth of the vagus nerves as well as the sympathetic nerves and the appearance of acetylcholinesterase (AChE)-positive cells in the wall of the upper gastro-intestinal tract is established. The maturation of the upper enteric ganglion cells is dependent on the presence

[Interaction of gastrointestinal peptides and the autonomic nervous system in the contractile function of the gallbladder].

Within 15 to 30 days after right unilateral subdiaphragmal vagotomy, resection of the anterior liver nervous plexus and mucosoantrumectomy in dogs, the gall bladder contractile function weakens and its adsorbing and concentrating functions are considerably impaired. Within a year these disturbances become less obvious and tend to normalize. These disturbances prove the local hormonal and the autonomic neural control in the gall excreting system. In the digestion phase, neurotensin, angiotensin and enkephalin inhibited the gall bladder motility. This effect was facilitated after sympathectomy a

[Response of the autonomous nervous system of the heart in diabetes mellitus (author's transl)].

The vegetative response of the heart in 80 diabetic patients and 24 controls was evaluated by means of four tests: cyclic variations, Valsalva's maneuver, static muscular exercises and postural hypotension. This methodology indicates that vegetative alterations of the heart in the diabetic subjects are frequent (56.25 per cent). The parameters which are first affected are the cyclic variations and the Valsalva's maneuver, and that this disorder increases with the duration of the diabetes, showing a clear correlation with the appearance of peripheral somatic polyneuropathy. Although from a clin
