Lantibiotic-producing bacteria impact microbiome resilience and colonization resistance.

A subset of commensal bacterial strains secretes bacteriocins, such as lantibiotics, to inhibit or kill neighboring bacteria, thereby protecting their niche in the gut. The antimicrobial spectrum of lantibiotics includes pathogens, offering a potential therapeutic approach for antibiotic-resistant infections. However, the impact of lantibiotic-producing bacteria on the microbiome remains poorly defined. We find that bacterial species encoding lanthipeptide genes in hospitalized patients are present in greater abundance than lantibiotic-deficient strains of the same species. Among the lanthipep…

Does the Future of Antibiotics Lie in Secondary Metabolites Produced by Xenorhabdus spp.? A Review.

The over-prescription of antibiotics for treatment of infections is primarily to blame for the increase in bacterial resistance. Added to the problem is the slow rate at which novel antibiotics are discovered and the many processes that need to be followed to classify antimicrobials safe for medical use. Xenorhabdus spp. of the family Enterobacteriaceae, mutualistically associated with entomopathogenic nematodes of the genus Steinernema, produce a variety of antibacterial peptides, including bacteriocins, depsipeptides, xenocoumacins and PAX (peptide antimicrobial-Xenorhabdus) peptides, plus a…

OatA, a peptidoglycan O-acetyltransferase involved in Listeria monocytogenes immune escape, is critical for virulence.

Microbial pathogens have evolved mechanisms to overcome immune responses and successfully infect their host. Here, we studied how Listeria m … f antimicrobial compounds targeting bacterial cell wall such as lysozyme, β-lactam antibiotics, and bacteriocins and that O-acetylation is required for Listeria growth in macrophages. Moreover, oatA mutant virulence is drastically affected in mice following intravenous or oral inoculation. In addition, the oatA mutant induced early secretion of proinflammatory …

Antagonistic activity and biocontrol potential of Pseudomonas sp. T19G isolated from the tomato rhizosphere against Ralstonia solanacearum.

Tomato bacterial wilt, caused by the soilborne bacterium Ralstonia solanacearum, remains difficult to manage, creating a need for biologically derived control agents. Here, we isolated Pseudomonas sp. T19G from the rhizosphere soil of healthy tomato plants and evaluated its antagonistic activity, protective effects, genomic basis, and influence on rhizosphere function. T19G fermentation broth inhibited R. solanacearum, and sterile cell-free supernatant caused a dose-dependent decline in viable pathogen populations. T19G significantly reduced viable root-associated pathogen populations and path

Lvvibriocin-GK effectively reduced skin ulcer syndrome of Apostichopus japonicus by eliminating surface bacteria, modulating gut microbiota, and enhancing host immune responses.

Skin ulceration syndrome (SUS) is a major threat to the aquaculture of Apostichopus japonicus, particularly in southern China, where it has shown high mortality rates and infectious potential. Traditional antibiotic treatments often lead to challenges such as antibiotic resistance. Antimicrobial peptides (AMPs), which are vital elements of innate immunity, represent a promising alternative for treating SUS. In the study, a novel AMP named Lvvibriocin-GK identified in Litopenaeus vannamei was found to have a strong antibacterial activity against multiple Vibrio species that possibly cause SUS.

Research progress in the use of lactic acid bacteria as natural biopreservatives against Pseudomonas spp. in meat and meat products: A review.

Meat and meat products represent excellent sources of key nutrients for human health, such as protein, essential amino acids, B vitamins, an … orne pathogens, thanks to the production of different inhibitory compounds including organic acids, bacteriocins, carbon dioxide, hydrogen peroxide, ethanol, N-diacetyl, and lactones. This bioprotective activity might justify the use of lactic acid bacteria or their metabolites as natural preservatives to extend the shelf-life of the products. However, the eff …

Acinetobacter baumannii ATCC 17978 encodes a microcin system with antimicrobial properties for contact-independent competition.

Acinetobacter baumannii is a multidrug-resistant opportunistic pathogen that persists in the hospital environment and causes various clinical infections, primarily affecting immunocompromised patients. A. baumannii has evolved a wide range of mechanisms to compete with neighbouring bacteria. One such competition strategy depends on small secreted peptides called microcins, which exert antimicrobial effects in a contact-independent manner. Here, we report that A. baumannii ATCC 17978 (AB17978) encodes the class II microcin 17 978 (Mcc17978) with antimicrobial activity against closely related Ac

[Value of antibiotype and bacteriocinotype for differentiating Shigella strains isolated in Argentina].

The aim of the present work was to analyse the phenotypical characteristics of Shigella strains in order to evaluate their possible utilisation as epidemiological markers. For one year, we studied 95 strains of Shigella obtained from stool specimens of patients with dysentery. Bacteria came from various health care centres in the states of Chaco and Corrientes (Argentina). Bacteria were identified by using classical biochemical methods. All strains were serotyped and susceptibility patterns were determined using thirteen antibiotics. Bacteriocin typing was determined by the sensitivity to pioc

After a century of nisin research - where are we now?

It is almost a century since nisin was discovered in fermented milk cultures, coincidentally in the same year that penicillin was first described. Over the last 100 years this small, highly modified pentacyclic peptide has not only found success in the food industry as a preservative but has also served as the paradigm for our understanding of the genetic organization, expression, and regulation of genes involved in lantibiotic biosynthesis-one of the few cases of extensive post-translation modification in prokaryotes. Recent developments in understanding the complex biosynthesis of nisin have
