Clinical, Bacteriological Profile and Outcome of Neonatal Sepsis.

BACKGROUND: Sepsis is a major cause of morbidity and mortality among neonates in Nepal. This study was conducted to determine the clinical-bacteriological profile, their antibiotic susceptibility patterns, and clinical outcome of culture-positive neonatal sepsis. METHODS: This was a prospective study conducted at B.P Koirala Institute of Health Sciences from July 2018 to June 2019. Neonates with clinically diagnosed sepsis having blood culture positive were included in the study. Blood samples culture and antimicrobial susceptibility testing were performed with the standard microbiological me

[Bacteriological analysis of therapeutic important antimicrobial resistance].

Antimicrobial resistance in bacterial infections is a major concern for clinical settings. In recent years, the number of Extended-spectrum β-lactamase producing (ESBL)- and fluoroquinolones (FQ)-resistant Escherichia coli has been increasing in Japan, especially against third-generation cephalosporins and FQs, which are frequently used in medical practice. On the other hand, antimicrobial agents such as tazobactam-piperacillin, colistin, and tigecycline, which are not general-purpose agents but last-line drugs for multidrug-resistant bacteria, are also important. Enterobacteriaceae that are r

Sampling strategy for bacteriological diagnosis of intrathoracic tuberculosis.

BACKGROUND: Pulmonary tuberculosis (TB) is the most frequent site of TB and the one leading its spread worldwide. Multiple specimens are commonly collected for TB diagnosis including those requiring invasive procedures. This study aimed to review the sampling strategy for the microbiological diagnosis of pulmonary TB. METHODS: A retrospective analysis of collected samples from September 1st 2014 to May 1st 2016 in the Bacteriology laboratory of Pitié-Salpêtrière Hospital (Paris, France) was performed. All the samples collected in patients aged over 18 years for the bacteriological diagnosis o…

Clinical Characteristics and Bacteriological Profile of Moraxella Keratitis.

PURPOSE: Moraxella species are rare causative pathogens of severe sight-threatening keratitis. The aim of this study was to analyze the clinical presentation, predisposing risk factors, in vitro antimicrobial susceptibility, and treatment associated with Moraxella keratitis. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed 30 culture-proven cases of Moraxella keratitis from multiple centers in Japan. RESULTS: The mean age of the patients was 58.4 ± 23.4 years. The most common ocular conditions were contact lens wearing (5 patients, 16.7%) and trauma (3 patients, 10.0%). Seven patients had diabetes melli

Bacteriological patterns and antibiotic sensitivities in calculus cholecystitis.

BACKGROUND: Calculus cholecystitis with its complications dominates the diseases of the biliary tract. There is an inherent difficulty in identifying patients having infected gall bladders who may have the risk of wound infection or gram negative septicaemia after cholecystectomy. This study was conducted to ascertain the bacteriological patterns and antibiotic sensitivities of bile in calculus cholecystitis patients presenting at a tertiary care hospital and formulate guidelines for prophylactic antibiotic therapy. METHODS: This descriptive study was conducted in Combined Military Hospital,

Bacteriological aspects implicated in abdominal surgical emergencies.

UNLABELLED: The purpose of the present study was to establish the microbial etiology of abdominal surgical emergencies as well as the relationship between the bacterial etiology and the virulence factors produced by the respective isolated strains. 110 bacterial strains were isolated from 100 randomized clinical cases, operated during 2009-2010 in the First Surgical Clinic of the University Hospital of Bucharest. The clinical cases (sex ratio 52 M/48F aged between 22-85 years old) were classified into three risk groups, as related to their severity. The isolated strains were characterized by c

Was there a Bacteriological Revolution in late nineteenth-century medicine?

That there was a 'Bacteriological Revolution' in medicine in the late nineteenth-century, associated with the development of germ theories of disease, is widely assumed by historians; however, the notion has not been defined, discussed or defended. In this article a characterisation is offered in terms of four linked rapid and radical changes: (i) a series of discoveries of the specific causal agents of infectious diseases and the introduction of Koch's Postulates; (ii) a reductionist and contagionist turn in medical knowledge and practice; (iii) greater authority for experimental laboratory m

[Bacteriological pattern of acute purulent balanoposthitis in children].

The microflora of the prepucial sac in 94 children (aged 2 months to 15 years) with acute purulent balanoposthitis (APB) was studied. In the overwhelming majority of cases APB in children was caused by facultative anaerobic and aerobic bacteria (96.7%); of these, Gram positive bacteria occurred most frequently (85.7% of cases). In 51.6% of children these bacteria were represented by staphylococci, constituting 60.3% of all Gram positive flora. Gram negative bacteria were isolated in 40.6% of cases, Escherichia coli taking the first place among them. The isolated microflora was highly resistant

Bacteriological studies of gas gangrene and related infections.

Gas gangrene, a life threatening condition is predominantly caused by Clostridium spp. Over a five year period (1996-2000), 580 wound swabs were processed from patients who had vehicular accidents with crush injury. The specimens were processed for anaerobic and aerobic organisms by standard laboratory techniques. Of the 580 swabs, 55(9.48%) were primary smear positive for spore bearing bacteria, of which 48 grew Clostridium spp. They were the sole anaerobic isolates in 30 patients (62.5%) whereas Clostridium spp. along with nonsporing anaerobes were isolated in 18 patients. Clostridium perfri

Complications of bacteriologically confirmed typhoid fever in children.

To find the incidence, markers and nature of complications of typhoid fever, we studied 102 children with cultures positive for Salmonella typhi in a cross-sectional study, prospectively, over a period of almost 5 years. All isolates were sensitive to commonly used antibiotics. One third of these children developed complications which included: anicteric hepatitis, bone marrow suppression, paralytic ileus, myocarditis, psychosis, cholecystitis, osteomyelitis, peritonitis, pneumonia, haemolysis, and syndrome of inappropriate release of antidiuretic hormone (SIADH). Twelve children developed mul

[Pneumococcal meningitis: epidemiological, clinical and bacteriological characteristics].

OBJECTIVE: To analyze the epidemiological and clinical features of pneumococcal meningitis. PATIENTS AND METHODS: We performed a retrospective study of 53 cases of pneumococcal meningitis that occurred in 47 pediatric patients in our hospital between 1977 and 2000. Four children had recurrent meningitis. In all patients Streptococcus pneumoniae was isolated from cerebrospinal fluid culture. The epidemiological, bacteriological and clinical characteristics were studied. RESULTS: Pneumococcal meningitis represented 6 % of bacterial meningitis in our environment with 2-3 cases registered per ye

Clinico-bacteriological study of neonatal septicemia in Hubli.

Septicemia is a leading cause of neonatal morbidity and mortality in India. In a study of 242 infants with septicemia conducted between March 1996 & June 1997 at Hubli, Karnataka, 43.39% infants had 'very early onset' sepsis (VOS), 40.08%, had 'early onset' sepsis (EOS), and 16.53% 'late onset' sepsis (LOS). 54.55% neonates had birth weight below 2000 g and 39.67% were born before 37 weeks of gestation. The cardiorespiratory signs and jaundice were the most frequent clinical features. The blood culture positivity rate was 64.87%. Klebsiella species was the commonest causative pathogen found an
