About 40 years prior to implementation of the Pure Food and Drug Act of 1906, this "cure" was promoted as The Great Remedy for Pain of "Rheumatism, Neuralgia, Backache, Headache, Toothache, Sprains, Bruises, etc." This paper follows the history of St. Jacobs Oil starting with its development by August Vogeler family in Baltimore, Maryland.

During the Black Death's reign in the fifteenth century, a number of installations providing care for lepers were converted into quarantine stations. Known as lazarettos or pesthouses, they served as disinfection way stations for travelers and, later, as hospitals for those diagnosed with pestilential diseases (e.g., smallpox, typhus, cholera). Beginning in the late 1700s, quarantine stations and pesthouses were established in the Baltimore area, including Hawkins Point, Lazaretto Point, Fairfield, and Leading Point.

OBJECTIVES: To elucidate the main latent classes of substances detected among overdose decedents, and latent class associations with age, sex, race, and jurisdiction of death in Maryland.
