Understanding end-of-life doula care provision: reporting on the design of a bereavement survey to evaluate doula support.

BACKGROUND: Delivery of consistent patient-centred care at end-of-life care continues to challenge healthcare providers and research continu … an end-of-life doula in supporting the dying person and those who care for them, we designed a post-bereavement survey as part of a wider evaluation strategy of doula services. Following multiple literature reviews and an iterative process of consulting with the professional organisation and previous service users, a questionnaire was developed to collect thi …

Investigating Gene-Environment Interplay Between Bereavement and Polygenic Risk for Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder on Externalizing Behaviors During Adolescence.

OBJECTIVE: The death of a close friend during adolescence may have a negative impact on one's mental health. However, existing literature has focused primarily on internalizing disorders, leaving the domain of externalizing behaviors understudied. Furthermore, the role of genetics in shaping post-bereavement psychopathology is not understood. In response, we examine potential interplay between polygenic liability for attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and bereavement of a close friend in shaping risk of post-loss externalizing symptoms among adolescents. METHOD: We examined self-…

Bereavement in critical care: A narrative review and practice exploration of current provision of support services and future challenges.

This special article outlines the background to bereavement in critical care and scopes the current provision and evidence for bereavement support following death in critical care. Co-authored by a family member and former critical care patient, we aim to draw out the current challenges and think about how and where support can be implemented along the bereavement pathway. We draw on the literature to examine different trajectories of dying in critical care and explore how these might impact bereavement, highlighting important points and risk factors for complicated grief. We present graphic r…

Assessing the quality of bereavement care after perinatal death: development and piloting of a questionnaire to assess parents' experiences.

Understanding parents' experience of care is essential to develop high-quality perinatal bereavement services. This study aimed at developing a questionnaire to identify parents' needs and record their experience of care. The patient experience questionnaire was developed by professionals and parents, and piloted in a tertiary maternity unit. Responses were received from 58 parents. Sensitivity and kindness of staff and time spent with their baby were ranked as 'very important' by 95% of parents. Care in these areas largely met their needs (90%), although 5% of respondents stated that partners…

Gender similarities in somatic depression and in DSM depression secondary symptom profiles within the context of severity and bereavement.

BACKGROUND: Most population studies report higher rates of depression among women than men, and some researchers have observed gender differences in depression symptoms overall, or in sub-groupings (e.g. somatic depression). However, gender symptom differences have been inconsistent, prompting this investigation of gender differences in secondary DSM symptom profiles in the context of bereavement status, age, and depression severity. METHODS: Individuals with symptoms of core depression (flat affect or anhedonia) were selected from a large survey of adults in the Alberta, Canada workforce. An…

Prenatal maternal bereavement and mortality in the first decades of life: a nationwide cohort study from Denmark and Sweden.

BACKGROUND: The loss of a close relative is one of the most stressful life events. In pregnancy, this experience has been associated with a higher risk of fetal death and under-five mortality, but little is known about potential effects on long-term mortality in offspring. We examined the association between prenatal maternal bereavement and mortality in a cohort of 5.3 million children followed until up to 37 years of age. METHOD: The population-based cohort study included 5 253 508 live singleton births in Denmark (1973-2004) and Sweden (1973-2006). Children born to mothers who lost a child…

Negative HIV-specific expectancies and AIDS-related bereavement as predictors of symptom onset in asymptomatic HIV-positive gay men.

This study examined negative HIV-related expectancies, AIDS-related bereavement, and the interaction of expectancies and bereavement as predictors of the onset of significant HIV-related symptoms among previously asymptomatic HIV-positive gay men. From a longitudinal psychobiological investigation, 72 men were selected who had been HIV-positive and asymptomatic from study entry (approximately 3 years). Participants were followed for an additional 2 1/2 to 3 1/2 years after psychosocial assessment, with symptom status assessed every 6 months. The interaction of negative HIV-specific expectancie…

The effects of induced yearning on attentional breadth of bereaved individuals: A cross-cultural study between China and Switzerland.

Bereaved individuals may experience persistent yearning for the deceased, marked by intense desire, mixed feelings, and recurring mental images of their loved one. Although the Attentional Scope Model links repetitive thinking to attentional breadth (i.e., the range of contextual information attended to at a given moment), how yearning influences attentional breadth across cultures remains unclear. We examined whether induced yearning would alter attentional breadth, whether this pattern differed for self- and other-related information, and whether these effects varied across cultural contexts

Experiences of bereaved family caregivers of patients with Alzheimer's disease regarding do-not-resuscitate orders: A qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: This study aimed to explore the end-of-life decision-making experiences of bereaved family caregivers of Alzheimer's disease (AD) patients, focusing on do-not-resuscitate orders. Given the high emotional and ethical burden on caregivers, understanding their challenges and needs is crucial to enhancing palliative care for AD patients. METHODS: A qualitative, exploratory study was conducted using semi-structured interviews with 22 family caregivers recruited through purposive sampling in central Taiwan. Participants were primary caregivers for AD patients who had been bedridden for

Prevalence of mental health symptoms following child loss: A population-based study of bereaved mothers in Bangladesh.

BACKGROUND: Bereavement following the death of a child represents one of the most severe forms of human loss. The loss of a child is a profoundly devastating life event that places mothers at heightened risk of mental health problems. This risk is often amplified in settings characterized by high child mortality and limited access to mental health services. However, nationally representative data from low- and middle-income countries remain limited. METHODS: Using the 2022 Bangladesh Demographic and Health Survey, we analyzed 2276 bereaved mothers who had experienced the death of at least one …

Mental health in traumatically bereaved individuals: The role of loss-related, personal, interpersonal, and emotion regulation factors.

The traumatic loss of a loved one is among the most common traumatic events worldwide and represents a public mental health concern. This study assessed the lifetime prevalence of such losses in a nationally representative sample of Icelandic adults. Among traumatically bereaved individuals in this sample (N = 1,002; 56.4% women, 43.6% men), a hierarchical structural equation model was used to examine loss-related, personal, interpersonal, and emotion regulation factors associated with psychological distress. The overall prevalence of exposure to traumatic loss was high (56.7%). Significant ri

Unravelling the complexities: a scoping review of the collateral effects on bereaved relatives during and beyond the COVID-19 pandemic.

The dying phase and the loss of a loved one, as well as the grief that follows, are a difficult process in the lives of relatives. These processes have been exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic, as numerous restrictions on contact and care for the dying and deceased have placed an additional burden on relatives. A review was conducted to identify these specific stress factors and their risk factors, as well as support options for bereaved individuals who lost a loved one during the COVID-19 pandemic. The scoping review followed the Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) methodology for scoping reviews,

Psychometric evaluation of the Swedish Traumatic Grief Inventory Self-Report Plus (TGI-SR+) in bereaved parents.

The International Classification of Diseases Eleventh Edition (ICD-11), and the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition, Text Revision (DSM-5-TR), now include prolonged grief disorder (PGD). Since criteria for PGD in both classification systems differ from prior proposed grief disorders and each other, the validation of a single instrument to screen for prolonged grief (PG) symptoms of both new diagnoses is critical for bereavement research and care. Therefore, we evaluated the psychometric properties of the Swedish version of the Traumatic Grief Inventory Self-Rep…
