Temporal coordination is fundamental for human communication and collaboration, yet the underlying neural mechanisms remain poorly understood. Central to this process is self-other integration, defined here as the extent to which a partner is processed as self-relevant and incorporated into one's sensorimotor representations. Recent evidence suggests that beta-band oscillatory dynamics may provide a shared sensorimotor framework supporting such integration. Here, we leveraged an immersive virtual-reality body-swap illusion to experimentally manipulate the embodiment of a partner's hand during

Large-scale cortical beta (β) oscillations were implicated in the learning processes, but their exact role is debated. We used MEG to explore the dynamics of movement-related β-oscillations while 22 adults learned, through trial and error, novel associations between four auditory pseudowords and movements of four limbs. As learning proceeded, spatial-temporal characteristics of β-oscillations accompanying cue-triggered movements underwent a major transition. Early in learning, widespread suppression of β-power occurred long before movement initiation and sustained throughout the whole behavior

Patients diagnosed with Parkinson's disease (PD) have difficulty initiating and executing movements due to an acquired imbalance of the basal ganglia thalamocortical circuit secondary to loss of dopaminergic input into the striatum. The unbalanced circuit is hyper-synchronized, presenting as larger and longer bursts of beta-band (13-30 Hz) oscillations in the subthalamic nucleus (STN). As a first step toward a novel PD therapy that aims to improve symptoms through beta desynchronization, we sought to determine if individuals with PD could acquire volitional control of STN beta power in a neuro

INTRODUCTION: The psychomotor disturbance is a common symptom in patients with major depressive disorder (MDD). The neurological mechanisms of psychomotor disturbance are intricate, involving alterations in the structure and function of motor-related regions. However, the relationship among changes in the spontaneous activity, motor-related activity, local cortical thickness, and psychomotor function remains unclear.
METHOD: A total of 140 patients with MDD and 68 healthy controls performed a simple right-hand visuomotor task during magnetoencephalography (MEG) scanning. All patients were div

We reviewed 18 EEG studies in four members of a family with the Lafora form of progressive myoclonic epilepsy. Each patient was the product of a consanguinous marriage and presented as a teenager with progressive seizures, myoclonus, dementia, and ataxia, and had biopsy proven disease. The EEG early in Lafora disease has spike-wave activity resembling that seen in a primary generalized epilepsy; the background slowing is more typical of a secondary generalized epilepsy. With disease progression, there is increased epileptiform activity, and a striking change in the spike-wave complexes, with a

Abnormal deposition of β-amyloid (Aβ) is a significant pathological feature of neurodegenerative diseases, particularly Alzheimer's disease (AD). The glymphatic system (GS) plays a crucial role in Aβ clearance. Various rhythmic activities of the organism dynamically influence Aβ clearance by modulating GS function. In this paper, we systematically review the mechanisms linking cardiovascular rhythms, respiratory rhythms, neural rhythms, circadian rhythms, and exercise patterns to Aβ clearance via the GS. Cardiovascular rhythms affect cerebral perfusion pressure and vascular pulsation to regula

Puberty is a period of substantial hormonal fluctuations, and pubertal hormones can modulate structural and functional changes in the developing brain. Many previous studies have characterized the neural oscillatory responses serving movement, which include a beta event-related desynchronization (ERD) preceding movement onset, gamma and theta responses coinciding with movement execution, and a post-movement beta-rebound (PMBR) response following movement offset. While a few studies have investigated the developmental trajectories of these neural oscillations serving motor control, the impact o

Pineal glands of male Syrian hamsters stimulated in vivo with isoproterenol (ISO) for 4 h before the onset of darkness showed a 4-h advance in the timing of the nighttime increases in both N-acetyltransferase activity and melatonin levels. When ISO (1 mg/kg) was administered every 2 h to animals kept in light during the night, a significant increase in melatonin synthesis was observed after 4-6 h. The results suggest that the Syrian hamster pineal gland can respond in vivo to continuous beta-adrenergic stimulation, but a lag period of 4-6 h is required before there is an increase in melatonin

Nearly one billion people worldwide suffer from obsessive-compulsive behaviors1,2, yet our mechanistic understanding of these behaviors is incomplete, and effective therapeutics are unavailable. An emerging perspective characterizes obsessive-compulsive behaviors as maladaptive habit learning3,4, which may be associated with abnormal beta-gamma neurophysiology of the orbitofrontal-striatal circuitry during reward processing5,6. We target the orbitofrontal cortex with alternating current, personalized to the intrinsic beta-gamma frequency of the reward network, and show rapid, reversible, frequ

Neural oscillations are linked to perception and behavior and may reflect mechanisms for long-range communication between brain areas. We developed a causal model of oscillatory dynamics in the face perception network using magnetoencephalographic data from 51 normal volunteers. This model predicted induced responses to faces by estimating oscillatory power coupling between source locations corresponding to bilateral occipital and fusiform face areas (OFA and FFA) and the right superior temporal sulcus (STS). These sources showed increased alpha and theta and decreased beta power as well as se

Bile acid homeostasis is maintained by liver synthesis, bile duct secretion, microbial metabolism and intestinal reabsorption into the blood. When drug insults result in liver damage, the variances of bile acids (BAs) are related to the physiological status of the liver. Here, we established a method to simultaneously quantify 19 BAs in rat plasma, liver, bile and different intestinal section contents (duodenum, jejunum, ileum, cecum and colon) using high-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) to reveal the pattern of bile acid homeostasis in the enterohepatic ci

More than 400,000 patients undergo coronary artery bypass graft surgery (CABG) each year in the United States. At least 20-30% of these patients have atrial fibrillation (Afib), making this arrhythmia one of the most common postoperative problems. This generally benign problem can increase surgical morbidity and the cost and length of hospital stay. If not treated promptly and effectively, Afib can delay a full and rapid recovery. Afib usually occurs in paroxysms between the second and fifth postoperative day and appears directly related to effects of surgery (pericarditis, changes in autonomi

Adenosine is a nucleoside that impacts the cardiovascular system via the activation of its membrane receptors, named A1R, A2AR, A2BR and A3R. Adenosine is released during hypoxia, ischemia, beta-adrenergic stimulation or inflammation and impacts heart rhythm and produces strong vasodilation in the systemic, coronary or pulmonary vascular system. This review summarizes the main role of adenosine on the cardiovascular system in several diseases and conditions. Adenosine release participates directly in the pathophysiology of atrial fibrillation and neurohumoral syncope. Adenosine has a key role

Bradyarrhythmias are a common clinical finding and comprise a number of rhythm disorders including sinus node dysfunction and atrioventricular conduction disturbances. Clinical presentation varies from asymptomatic electrocardiogram findings (eg, during a routine examination) to a wide range of symptoms such as heart failure symptoms, near syncope or syncope, central nervous symptoms, or nonspecific and chronic symptoms such as dizziness or fatigue. Conditions resulting in bradyarrhythmic disorders are divided into intrinsic and extrinsic conditions causing damage to the conduction system. Fur

Heart failure (HF) and atrial fibrillation (AF) are major global health challenges with rising prevalence and significant morbidity, mortality, and healthcare burden. Despite advances in HF management, AF remains a critical comorbidity that worsens outcomes and requires ad hoc treatment strategies, increasing the risk of non-adherence and side effects. While rhythm control strategies in AF have gained attention for their prognostic benefits in HF, the pharmacological treatment of HF in patients with AF, including the benefit of rhythm versus rate control, remains underexplored. The relationshi

BACKGROUND: A retrospective study was undertaken to evaluate the respective prevalence of proarrhythmic events depending on various therapeutic regimens within a population of patients with history of atrial fibrillation (AF) undergoing a rhythm control strategy.
METHODS: Inclusion criterion was the presence of AF in the patient's clinical history, whose cardioversion had been followed by the adoption of rhythm control strategy. The primary endpoint was the determination of the respective prevalences of paradoxical arrhythmias in the various therapeutic groups. The secondary objective was all

Recent studies have suggested an information-processing bias in social phobia (SP). Little is known about the electrophysiological correlates of anxiety in SP. The aim of the present study was to investigate the quantitative electroencephalogram (EEG) in 25 drug-free patients with SP as compared with age- and sex-matched normal controls and to correlate anxiety and depressive symptoms with EEG data. EEG was recorded under vigilance-controlled and resting conditions. The Spielberger State and Trait Anxiety Scale (STAI) and the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI) were administered to assess anxiety
