The occurrence of smooth muscle neoplasms and lymphoproliferative disorders in immunocompromised patients is well recognized. We report the case of an 8-year-old girl with adenosine deaminase (ADA)-deficient severe combined immunodeficiency (SCID) status post-bone marrow transplant (BMT), in whom Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) was detected in innumerable leiomyomas involving the gallbladder (leiomyomatosis), and multifocal leiomyomas in liver, spleen, pancreas, intestinal tract, and lung. The leiomyomas of the gallbladder, liver, spleen, and lung were asymptomatic, while those located in the colon b

BACKGROUND: Mixed neuroendocrine non-neuroendocrine neoplasms (MiNENs) are rare tumors of the gastrointestinal tract with neuroendocrine and non-neuroendocrine components. Ampullary MiNENs are extremely rare, with few cases reported to date.
CASE REPORT: A 41-year-old male was diagnosed incidentally with a dilated common bile duct and intrahepatic biliary radicles while being evaluated for right ureteric calculi. Contrast-enhanced computed tomography scan of the abdomen showed a mass in the ampullary region with a positive double duct sign. Side-viewing endoscopy indicated an ampullary growth

Carcinoma of the extrahepatic biliary tract accounts for <2% of all cancers. Neuroendocrine tumor of the extrahepatic bile duct is very rare, and there are <200 cases reported since 1959. The preoperative diagnosis is infrequent (5.12%). The definite diagnosis relies on postoperative pathology which utilized immunohistochemistry study on many biomarkers to diagnose the histological subtypes of neuroendocrine neoplasms, such as chromogranin A, synaptophysin, and neuron-specific enolase. When the primary tumor has no metastases, radical removal of the lesion appears as curative treatment. The tr

In recent years, degus (Octodon degus), rodents native to South America, have been becoming increasingly popular as pet animals. Data about neoplastic diseases in this species are still sparse and mainly limited to single-case reports. The aim of this study was to present neoplastic and non-neoplastic proliferative changes in 16/100 pet degus examined at the Veterinary Faculty University of Ljubljana from 2010 to 2015 and to describe the clinic-pathological features of these lesions. Twenty different lesions of the integumentary, musculoskeletal, genitourinary and gastrointestinal systems were

Recent developments in imaging technology have enabled CT and MR cholangiopancreatography (MRCP) to provide minimally invasive alternatives to endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography for the pre- and post-operative assessment of biliary disease. This article describes anatomical variants of the biliary tree with surgical significance, followed by comparison of CT and MR cholangiographies. Drip infusion cholangiography with CT (DIC-CT) enables high-resolution three-dimensional anatomical representation of very small bile ducts (e.g. aberrant branches, the caudate branch and the cystic du

Cholangiocarcinoma (CCA) is a highly lethal cancer arising from the biliary tract epithelium. The cancer biology of this neoplasm is not well understood. To date, only a few CCA cell lines have been reported, which were mostly developed from Asian patients. In this study, we report and characterize a new intrahepatic CCA cell line, LIV27, derived from a surgically resected tumor in a 67-year-old Caucasian woman with primary sclerosing cholangitis (PSC). LIV27 cells grow well in collagen-coated flasks or plates with a doubling time of 57.8 h at passage 14. LIV27 cells have high tumorigenicity i

We report a case of double cancer of the cystic duct and gallbladder associated with low junction of the cystic duct. A 73-year-old woman was admitted to the hospital complaining of upper abdominal pain. Endoscopic retrograde cholangiography showed a stenotic lesion in the lower common bile duct and no visualization of the cystic duct or gallbladder. Enhanced computed tomography revealed a heterogeneously enhanced tumorous lesion around the lower bile duct in the pancreatic head. A diagnosis of cancer arising from the cystic duct that entered the lower part of the common hepatic duct was made

Gastrointestinal (GI) cancers constitute an umbrella term for a wide variety of malignancies that are located in the digestive tract (esophageal, gastric, small and large intestine, anus, liver, gallbladder, and pancreas), with 25% of total cancers and 35% of cancer-related deaths being attributed to them. An alarming trend of rising GI malignancy diagnoses, especially in younger age groups, underscores the need for discoveries in liquid-based biomarkers that facilitate both early detection and optimal disease management. Extracellular vesicles (EVs) not only constitute promising nano-sized bi

We delve into the critical role of the gut microbiota and its metabolites in the pathogenesis and progression of hepatobiliary and pancreatic (HBP) cancers, illuminating an urgent need for breakthroughs in diagnostic and therapeutic strategies. Given the high mortality rates associated with HBP cancers, which are attributed to aggressive recurrence, metastasis, and poor responses to chemotherapy, exploring microbiome research presents a promising frontier. This research highlights how microbial metabolites, including secondary bile acids, short-chain fatty acids, and lipopolysaccharides, cruci

BACKGROUND: Surgical tumor resection is the only potentially curative treatment option for patients with biliary tract cancer (BTC). However, 5-year survival rates are still below 50% mainly due to tumor recurrence. The preoperative identification of ideal surgical candidates has remained a major challenge and easily accessible algorithms including parameters of the individual tumor biology are missing. Chemokine (C-C motif) ligand 23 (CCl23) has been associated with tumor progression in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), but its role in the context of BTC is largely unknown. Here, we evaluated c

To evaluate whether it is useful for diagnosis to detect K-ras and p53 mutations in biopsy specimens and bile of biliary tract lesions, 12 cholangiocarcinomas (CC), eight cases of cholangitis, seven gallbladder carcinomas (GBC), seven gallbladder cholesterol polyps, four cases of adenomyomatosis of the gallbladder and five cases of cholecystitis were examined. K-ras and p53 mutations in bile were detected by a two-step polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and nested PCR-single-strand conformation polymorphism (SSCP) analysis. In addition, p53 protein expression in biopsy specimens from CC were exam

We conducted a population-based study of 627 patients with biliary tract cancers (368 of gallbladder, 191 bile duct, and 68 ampulla of Vater), 1037 with biliary stones, and 959 healthy controls randomly selected from the Shanghai population, all personally interviewed. Gallstone status was based on information from self-reports, imaging procedures, surgical notes, and medical records. Among controls, a transabdominal ultrasound was performed to detect asymptomatic gallstones. Gallstones removed from cancer cases and gallstone patients were classified by size, weight, colour, pattern, and conte

BACKGROUND: The C-reactive protein-albumin-lymphocyte (CALLY) index integrates systemic inflammation, nutritional status, and immune competence, but evidence in hepatobiliary and pancreatic (HBP) malignancies remains uncertain. We evaluated its association with survival outcomes.
METHODS: A systematic search of PubMed, Embase, Scopus, and Web of Science was performed from inception to 9 September 2026. Observational studies involving adults with hepatobiliary and pancreatic malignancies were eligible if they evaluated pretreatment CALLY and reported HRs for survival outcomes. Random-effects w

Hepatobiliary and pancreatic cancers (HBPCs) remain among the most aggressive nature and lethal malignancies, presenting formidable challenges in their treatment. Surgical resection remains the cornerstone of curative treatment for early-stage HBPCs; however, advanced cases often necessitate a multidisciplinary systematic approach incorporating radiotherapy and immunotherapy. In recent years, innovations in radiotherapy technology have facilitated the precise and targeted delivery of tumoricidal doses, minimizing damage to surrounding normal tissue and expanding the application of radiotherapy

Cancer epidemiology, biomarkers & prevention : a publication of the American Association for Cancer Research, cosponsored by the American Society of Preventive Oncology2023eng
BACKGROUND: The incidence of cholangiocarcinoma and gallbladder cancer has been increasing and decreasing respectively in the United States, whereas their mortality has been declining since 1980, which suggests improved overall survival of biliary tract cancers (BTC). We aimed to investigate temporal trends of BTC stages and survival and their associations with demographic factors.
METHODS: A total of 55,163 patients with BTC collected from 2000 to 2018 from the NCI Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results 18 registry were included in this study. We assessed the temporal trend of BTC stage

Older companion animals may be uncommonly affected with hepatobiliary neoplasia. If clinical signs are shown they are often nonspecific. Animals may have increased liver enzyme activities detected on serum biochemistry. Ultrasound imaging can help to characterize liver lesions and guide sampling with fine needle aspiration. Treatment for massive liver tumor morphology involves liver lobectomy. Prognosis depends on the tumor morphology, type, and stage, but can be good for cats and dogs with massive hepatocellular tumors, with animals experiencing prolonged survival and low recurrence rates.
