This essay presents arguments against legalizing medically assisted suicide (MAS) or voluntary active euthanasia (VAE) in Islamic regions. MAS and VAE should be determined by particular regions based on their respective mainstream moral cultures. A variety of moral frameworks can assist clinicians in making ethical decisions. In examining articles on palliative sedation and terminal extubation, we were struck that bioethical discussions uniformly appealed to principlism and especially to the rule of double effect. With no statutory definition of death, the accepted medical definition relies on brain stem death criteria as a definitive measure of diagnosing death. INTRODUCTION: This is a study protocol that tests and refines realist theories regarding the uptake and scale-up of the linked maternity waiting home (hereafter MWH) and facility birth intervention in the Mozambican context. The theories were developed through a realist review of MWH-facility birth literature from low-income and middle-income countries.
