Early life conditions, partnership histories, and mortality risk for Swedish men and women born 1915-1929.

This paper investigates the relationship between early life biological and social factors, partnership history, and mortality risk. Mortality risks for Swedish men and women over age 50 in the Uppsala Birth Cohort born 1915-1929 were estimated using survival analysis. Relative mortality risk was evaluated through nested multiplicative Gompertz models for 4348 men and 3331 women, followed from age 50 to the end of 2010. Being born to an unmarried mother was associated with higher mortality risk in later life for men and women, and relative to married individuals, being unmarried after age 50 wa

Association of time since last birth, age at first birth and parity with breast cancer survival among parous women: a register-based study from Norway.

Reproductive factors that have a well-documented effect on breast cancer risk may also influence the prognosis of the disease, but previous studies on breast cancer survival have yielded conflicting results. We combined information from two population-based registries and obtained information on 16,970 parous women with invasive breast cancer. Cox regression analysis was used to assess breast cancer survival in relation to age at diagnosis, age at first birth, time since last birth and parity. We stratified the analyses by age at diagnosis (<50 and ≥ 50 years) as an approximation for menopausa

Cardiovascular mortality after pre-eclampsia in one child mothers: prospective, population based cohort study.

OBJECTIVE: To assess the association of pre-eclampsia with later cardiovascular death in mothers according to their lifetime number of pregnancies, and particularly after only one child. DESIGN: Prospective, population based cohort study. SETTING: Medical Birth Registry of Norway. PARTICIPANTS: We followed 836,147 Norwegian women with a first singleton birth between 1967 and 2002 for cardiovascular mortality through linkage to the national Cause of Death Registry. About 23,000 women died by 2009, of whom 3891 died from cardiovascular causes. Associations between pre-eclampsia and cardiovasc

Exposure to mother's pregnancy and lactation in infancy is associated with sexual attraction to pregnancy and lactation in adulthood.

INTRODUCTION: Several theories, including psychodynamic theories, sexual imprinting and early conditioning have been formulated to explain s … NS: We discuss our findings in relation to theories of sexual development and to earlier reports of birth order effects on sexual behavior. We suggest that this age range may constitute a sensitive period for the acquisition of sexual preferences.

Developmental antecedents of late adolescence substance use patterns.

This longitudinal study examined antecedents of substance use behavior among 176 (53% male) adolescents. Adolescents were classified as (a) abstainers (n = 19), (b) experimenters (n = 65), (c) at-risk youth (n = 63), and (d) abusers (n = 29) based on their reported substance use behavior at age 17.5. Parental behavior, peer competence, and problem behavior, measured from early childhood through age 16, were examined as predictors of substance use patterns. Multinomial logistic regression models revealed that early maternal hostility, externalizing behavior problems in first grade and at age 16

Epidemiology of serious head injuries in childhood.

A survey of 87 serious head injuries of children from 3--14 years old revealed road traffic accidents to be the cause of most of the long-term morbidity and nearly all the mortality. Social background of these children was not significantly different from the general population in respect of class or family size, but there was an excess of children of high birth order and probably from single parent families, suggesting a lack of supervision. The need for a multidisciplinary approach to the rehabilitation of the child with severe head injury is emphasized.

Psychotic grandiosity.

ALTHOUGH PSYCHOTIC GRANDIOSITY, like delusions of persecution, constitutes a major symptom in paranoid psychoses, it has not aroused investigative attention. Surprisingly little has been added to our understanding of psychotic grandiosity in the past 50 years, and our knowledge of it has not advanced appreciably beyond the early descriptions provided by Bleuler, Kraepelin, Freud, and others. It is indicative of this lack of interest that Psychological Abstracts does not have a heading for grandiosity, and that no articles under the heading megalomania have appeared in the past five years. A family study of coeliac disease.

Studies by Thompson, 1 Carter et al, 2 MacDonald et al. and McCrae 4 have all shown a high familial frequency of coeliac disease (CD). The diagnostic criteria differed in each study; in Thompson's patients the diagnosis was based on clinical or historical data alone; in Carter's study response to a gluten-free diet was required, while in MacDonald's and McCrae's studies the diagnostic criteria included the demonstration of the lesion of CD by small bowel biopsy. In MacDonald's study some asymptomatic cases were discovered and a few of these had normal fat balance results. No hereditary pattern

Birth Characteristics and Risk of Pediatric Thyroid Cancer: A Population-Based Record-Linkage Study in California.

Background: Incidence rates of thyroid cancer in children and young adults (age 0-19 years) have nearly doubled over a recent 15-year period … an increased risk of pediatric thyroid cancer, while male sex (OR: 0.21 [CI 0.18-0.25]) and higher birth order (third or higher OR: 0.81 [CI 0.68-0.98]) were associated with a decreased risk. Some heterogeneity was observed across subtype, most notably an elevated OR with higher birth order for follicular thyroid cancer, in contrast to the reduced risk for t …

Age at first birth in Canada: a hazards model analysis.

Studies on age at 1st birth and its covariates are few in the demographic literature on Canada, mainly due to the paucity of maternity history data. This is the 1st paper on this aspect of fertility, based on the data collected through the Canadian Fertility Survey in 1984 by Balakrishnan and colleagues. Since the majority of childbearing in Canada is still within marriage, this study focuses on ever-married women in the prime reproductive ages, 18-49, in 1984. To circumvent the problems of selectivity and censoring in the analysis of retrospective maternity history collected in a cross-sectio
