The aim of the present investigation was to study the phenomenon of asymmetry in length between the right and left humerus. Earlier studies have investigated the asymmetries between long bones both in upper and the lower extremities. These studies confirmed that the right side bone dimensions in upper limb were more prominent especially in length and diaphyseal breadth and as well as more asymmetry in the upper limb when compared with the lower limb. For the purposes of the study 200 pair of humerus, 100 male and 100 female, were elaborated. After results analysis with unpaired t-test observed

BACKGROUND: Adolescents recovering from operatively treated traumatic fractures face significant perioperative challenges, including pain, functional limitations, and psychological distress. Pain management often involves the use of opioids, which may contribute to the subsequent risk of developing substance use disorders (SUDs). This study explores the relationship between surgically treated upper and lower-extremity long-bone fractures and the subsequent risk of developing SUDs.
METHODS: This retrospective, propensity-matched cohort study used the TriNetX US Collaborative database, which en

INTRODUCTION: We report a very rare case of nonunion with ballooning deformity of the humeral bone after a periprosthetic humeral fracture nonunion.
CASE REPORT: A 79-year-old woman underwent hemiarthroplasty 19 years ago for her proximal humerus fracture. She injured her right humeral diaphysis (stem distal end fracture) 6 years ago. She underwent revision hemiarthroplasty with long stem, but bony union was not obtained, and her right upper limb function was subsequently abolished due to extreme instability and pain in her right upper arm. She was then referred to our hospital for further tr

INTRODUCTION: Pelvic fractures in elderly patients are associated with significant pain, functional decline, and prolonged rehabilitation, with the majority managed non-operatively. In the conservative management paradigm, intact upper extremity function is critical for mobilization with assistive devices; concurrent upper extremity (UE) fractures may therefore complicate recovery. The aim of this study was to evaluate the clinical outcomes associated with this injury combination in patients with conservatively managed pelvic fractures.
METHODS: A retrospective cohort study was conducted at a

PURPOSE: Diaphyseal bone defects of the upper and lower limbs represent a significant reconstructive challenge, often arising from high-energy trauma, posttraumatic osteomyelitis, or postoperative bone necrosis. This study evaluates the applicability, advantages, limitations, and outcomes of various reconstructive techniques for segmental diaphyseal defects in a cohort of 24 patients.
METHODS: Between 2004 and 2011, 24 patients (age range 15-74 years) with diaphyseal defects ranging from 4 to 15 cm were treated using the following reconstructive approaches: 1.Ilizarov bone transport (IBT), 2.

Living rodents show great diversity in their locomotor habits, including semiaquatic, arboreal, fossorial, ricochetal, and gliding species from multiple families. To assess the association between limb morphology and locomotor habits, the appendicular skeletons of 65 rodent genera from 16 families were measured. Ecomorphological analyses of various locomotor types revealed consistent differences in postcranial skeletal morphology that relate to functionally important traits. Behaviorally similar taxa showed convergent morphological characters, despite distinct evolutionary histories. Semiaquat

BACKGROUND: Nonunion and malunion of upper extremity fractures are uncommon but challenging complications, particularly when associated with infection, deformity, or multiple previous operations. Although internal fixation remains the standard treatment, external fixation based on Ilizarov principles offers advantages in complex situations including infection control, deformity correction, and gradual bone reconstruction. This study evaluates the indications, surgical technique, and outcomes of external fixation as a definitive treatment for nonunion and malunion of the upper extremity.

The authors describe two Indonesian siblings affected by a hitherto undocumented form of metaphyseal dysplasia that simulates enchondromatosis. The notable clinical features were short stature and lateral bowing of the lower extremities. These features were readily recognizable at birth. The radiographic examinations showed that the metaphyseal anomalies were localized predominantly in the lower extremities, the hip joints being the most severely affected. The upper extremities showed only minimal abnormalities. The name "Indonesian type of metaphyseal dysplasia" is suggested for this autosoma

BACKGROUND: A scaphoid fracture is a common injury affecting the wrist joint. A fracture of the carpus scaphoid can heal uneventfully or be complicated by non-union. Scaphoid non-union can result in persistent wrist pain, and with functional difficulties affecting all activities of daily living of the patients, this disability is expected to be significant since most of these patients are young active adults.
HYPOTHESIS: Extensive removal of the bone from the scaphoid, with the application of a large amount of cancellous bone graft and fixation with two to three wires, could lead to a high un

Soft tissue reconstruction in the extremities is complicated by the fact that injuries often involve composite defects of skin, muscle, tendon, nerve, and bone. In both the upper and lower limbs, achieving reliable soft tissue coverage, restoring function, and reducing complications are critical goals. The upper extremity requires precision and fine manipulation, whereas the lower limb should be reconstructed to support weight-bearing and mobility. Free flaps have become a routine part of the surgical armamentarium, offering flexible solutions tailored to different needs. Donor sites in the lo

Reconstruction of complex wounds of the hand associated with severe bone, tendon, nerve and soft-tissue injuries has been a major problem in hand surgery. Early definitive soft-tissue coverage of this kind of extensive wound with well-vascularized tissue is one of the most important stages of reconstruction for salvage of the extremity and restoration of function. Although multiple free flap donor sites have been described for complex upper extremity wounds, the authors think that anterolateral thigh (ALT) and lateral arm (LA) flaps are good choices for soft-tissue reconstruction in the upper

Thrombocytopenia-absent radius (TAR) syndrome is a rare genetic condition with a complex inheritance pattern. This syndrome is classically characterized by hypomegakaryocytic thrombocytopenia as well as bilateral absent radii, shortened ulna, and radially deviated 5-digit hands. During infancy, the predominant manifestations are hemorrhagic complications. Later in life, the bleeding disorder typically improves, but the musculoskeletal abnormalities become of greater concern because of the effects on quality of life. Although the classic musculoskeletal manifestations of TAR syndrome involve th

A 58 year old housewife with tumor shadow in the right upper lung field on the chest X-ray was admitted. Marked swelling and severe arthralgia of both extremities and soft tissue clubbing of the fingers had been presented for two years prior to admission. The radiographs and bone scintigrams indicated proliferating periostitis along the long bones. Bronchofiberscope showed the obstruction of B2a of the right bronchus but the histological diagnosis was not established. Serum level of CEA and IAP were found to be high. Soon after the right upper lobectomy, arthralgia was significantly improved.

Osteosarcoma is predominant in the adolescent and the elderly population, but few studies have described the characteristics and prognostic factors of patients older than 60 years. In this study, the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results registry database was used to identify all patients diagnosed with primary osteosarcoma from 1973 to 2014. We utilized Cox proportional hazards regression analysis to evaluate the association between patient overall survival and relevant characteristics, including gender, race, disease stage, treatment methods, primary tumor site, differentiation grade,

BACKGROUND: Upper limb fractures significantly alter movement, impacting function and recovery. Three-dimensional motion analysis allows precise assessment of these changes.
METHODS: Sixty patients were divided into four groups: shoulder, elbow, wrist fractures, and controls. Functional assessment was performed using the DASH questionnaire, followed by three-dimensional kinematic analysis with eight Oqus 300 cameras and 14 reflective markers on the thorax, scapula, humerus, forearm, and hand. The Acromion Marker Cluster method was used for accurate scapular tracking. Tasks analyzed included h
