A rare case of brain abscess caused by Actinomyces meyeri.

BACKGROUND: Brain abscesses are the rare and most severe form of actinomycosis, which usually manifests as abscesses of the occipital or parietal lobe due to direct expansion from an adjacent area, the oral cavity. In the medical literature, there are only a few reported cases of brain abscess caused by Actinomyces meyeri. In this report, we present a 35-year-old male patient who experienced an insidious headache and left-sided weakness and was diagnosed with an Actinomyces meyeri brain abscess. CASE PRESENTATION: A 35-year-old Nepalese man came to our institute with the primary complaint of

Acute actinomycotic brain abscess in a patient with rheumatoid arthritis.

An autopsy case of acute actinomycotic brain abscess involving a patient with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is reported. The patient was a 72-year-old man with a seven-year history of RA and pulmonary complications, who acutely developed dysarthria and dysphagia three days before death. Autopsy revealed a fresh, non-encapsulated abscess in the "late cerebritis" stage, measuring 2 cm in diameter, in the white matter of the right parietal lobe. A small number of tiny "sulfur granules" consisting of numerous filamentous bacilli were found within the abscess. The abscess had ruptured to the lateral ve

A Rare Pediatric Case of Neurocysticercosis Misdiagnosed As Brain Abscess.

Neurocysticercosis is a parasitic infection of the central nervous system caused by the larval stage of Taenia solium. Although this zoonotic infection is one of the major public health problems in some developing countries, it is extremely rare in Turkey. In this article, we present the case of a pediatric patient with neurocysticercosis who was misdiagnosed with brain abscess because of focal seizures in another hospital.

An Adult with Atrial Septal Defect Presenting with a Brain Abscess.

The common heart diseases resulting in a brain abscess are associated with a right to left shunt and include tetralogy of Fallot and transposition of great vessels. Atrial septal defect (ASD) is almost always associated with the left to right shunt and therefore is not a commonly considered risk factor for brain abscess. We report the case of a 29-year-old male, with no symptoms of cardiac disease, who presented with the left posterior frontal pyogenic abscess which led to the detection of a silent ASD. Our case emphasizes the need for a careful evaluation of the source of infection in patient

Brain Abscess Following Intracerebral Hemorrhage in a Patient With Pneumonia.

Brain abscess is a rare but potentially lethal infection of brain parenchyma, requiring prompt surgical intervention and high-dose antibiotic therapy. Brain abscess is a known complication of surgically treated intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH), but it is exceptionally rare that it occurs at the same site of a nonoperated ICH. Such cases may result from hematogenous spread from distant foci (pneumonia, infectious endocarditis) or contiguous sites. Herein, the authors report a case of 75-year-old woman presenting with a brain abscess 6 weeks after a nonoperated ICH. As the patient suffered from pn

[Clinical Case of Brain Abscess in a Patient With Tetralogy Fallot].

We present here a clinical case of brain abscess in a patient aged 26 years with congenital heart disease (CHD) - tetralogy of Fallot (blue type). Blue type CHD often leads to development of complications involving central nervous system (CNS), most often brain abscesses. The cause of difficulty of detection of such complications is one-sided focus of clinicians on cardiac pathology. Complaints indicative of the presence.

Brain abscess as the initial presentation of a macroprolactinoma: Case report.

Macroprolactinomas may behave invasively and infiltrate the skull base, causing a subsequent thinning that can also lead to a bone defect and a direct route of entry for pathogens. We describe the case of a 34-year-old male admitted to hospital with fever (38°C), headache, stiffness in the neck, diplopia and neurological impairment. Brain magnetic resonance imaging showed two bilateral abscesses in the fronto-parietal areas with intracranial venous sinus thrombosis and a pituitary adenoma that extended from the suprasellar region, eroding the sellar floor into the sphenoid sinus. Laboratory ho

Nocardia farcinica brain abscesses in an HIV-positive patient.

We present a case of Nocardia farcinica brain abscesses in an HIV-positive patient, initially misdiagnosed as cerebral toxoplasmosis. The correct diagnosis was eventually confirmed by brain biopsy. It is debatable as to whether surgical intervention is necessary for diagnosis and treatment of Nocardia abscesses. This case highlights the importance of early neurosurgical input and biopsy to aid correct and timely diagnosis.

First report of a brain abscess caused by Nocardia veterana.

Among Nocardia species causing infections, Nocardia veterana is rarely isolated and is mostly described as causing pulmonary infections. This is the first presentation of a case of brain abscess attributable to an N. veterana infection in a patient with type 2 diabetes. Prolonged antibiotic therapy with trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole led to successful clinical recovery.

Listeria monocytogenes brain abscess in a patient with multiple myeloma.

Listeria monocytogenes is an uncommon cause of illness in the general population. Meningoencephalitis is the most common central nervous system (CNS) manifestation of listeriosis. However, brain abscess represents 1-10% of all CNS listeriosis. To our knowledge, L. monocytogenes brain abscess in multiple myeloma patients has not been previously reported. Thus we report a 58-year-old male patient with multiple myeloma who developed a brain abscess due to L. monocytogenes. Due to a history of penicillin allergy, he was treated with intravenous trimethoprim/sulfamoxazole (TMP-SMX) for a total of 1

Brain abscesses in Malawian children: value of CT scan.

The clinical presentation and management of brain abscess in three HIV-uninfected Malawian children are reported. One case was associated with staphylococcal empyema and severe malarial anaemia and another case with chronic suppurative otitis media and mastoiditis. The third case had no identified extracranial focus of infection. These cases illustrate the difficulties of diagnosis and management of brain abscesses in the resource-poor setting where other causes of encephalopathy caused by infection are common, and highlight the value of neuroradiological imaging.

[A complicated case of Nocardia brain abscess for differential diagnosis].

BACKGROUND: Nocardia brain abscess is rare and has uncertain clinical features. Radiological differential diagnosis based on the metabolic feature of Nocardia is discussed. CASE DESCRIPTION: A 73-year-old man presented with a history of otitis media and was treated with antibiotics for 2 weeks. Computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) demonstrated an irregular ring-enhancement mass in the left cerebellar hemisphere. This lesion presented as a homogeneous high-intensity area in diffusion-weighted MRI. We also found decreased N-acetyl-aspartate (NAA) peak and increased chol

Tuberculosis infection presenting as brain abscess in an immunocompromised host.

Despite advances in modern treatment, tuberculosis remains an ever-present problem. With the HIV epidemic, the prevalence of tuberculosis has risen. Contributing to this trend has been the development of multi-resistant tuberculosis strains, as well as rising immigration from nations where tuberculosis is endemic. Although tuberculosis most commonly manifests as a pulmonary process, milary tuberculosis is also on the rise. Neurotuberculosis, a rare but dangerous progression of pulmonary tuberculosis, remains a difficult diagnostic and treatment dilemma to practitioners both in the United State

Brain abscesses--the Groote Schuur experience, 1993-2003.

OBJECTIVE: To review management and outcome of patients with brain abscess treated at Groote Schuur Hospital (GSH) between 1993 and 2003. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Case notes, radiological results and laboratory records were reviewed retrospectively for 121 patients at GSH who underwent a neurosurgical procedure for treatment of a brain abscess between 1993 and 2003. Patients not treated surgically were excluded. Follow-up with serial computed tomography (CT) scans, erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) and C-reactive protein (CRP) levels and the temperature chart were used to determine the durati

Huge osteoma of the frontoethmoidal sinus with secondary brain abscess.

Osteomas of paranasal sinuses are usually asymptomatic. When enlarged, they may cause serious complications. We report a case of huge frontoethmoidal osteoma associated with brain abscess. If an osteoma associated with an intracerebral pathology is detected, it should be remembered that this could have been a complication of the osteoma and a detailed radiological examination should be performed to show the extent of the osteoma and to confirm any defect at the posterior wall of the sinus which may lead intracerebral complications. Such an osteoma should be operated after the abscess was resol
