Effects of maternal exposure to procymidone on hepatic metabolism in the offspring of mice.

As an effective fungicide widely used in agricultural production, the excessive procymidone (PRO) residue has been detected in the environment and food. Our previous study demonstrated that PRO could destroy the intestinal barrier in mice and has a joint toxic effect. To explore the cross-generational impact of maternal exposure, 10-week-old C57BL/6 female mice were orally administrated to 10 and 100 mg/kg body weight/day of PRO during pregnancy and lactation. The offspring obtained nutrients from the maternal through the placenta and breast milk, and PRO residues were detected in the liver, i

Early intervention with breast milk mesenchymal stem cells attenuates the development of diabetic-induced testicular dysfunction via hypothalamic Kisspeptin/Kiss1r-GnRH/GnIH system in male rats.

Diabetic male infertility and sub fertility are major complications that may implicate both central and peripheral pathways as well as mechanisms controlling reproduction. This study was an attempt to explore the potential effect of breast milk mesenchymal stem cells (Br-MSCs) as a therapeutic tool for diabetic induced reproductive dysfunction at molecular level. Forty-five adult male Sprague Dawely rats were divided into 3 groups (n = 15); control group, diabetic group, and Br-MSCs treated diabetic group. The homing ability of Br-MSCs in diabetic treated rat testicles was confirmed via semi-q

Suppression of serum IgE response and systemic anaphylaxis in a food allergy model by orally administered high-dose TGF-beta.

Some epidemiological or association studies suggest that transforming growth factor-beta (TGF-beta) in breast milk may be a decisive factor in diminishing the risk of allergic diseases during infancy. The observations have prompted us to investigate whether TGF-beta, when taken orally, can affect allergic immune responses. Repeated high-dose ovalbumin peptide (OVA) feeding was previously reported to induce OVA-specific IgE production and an anaphylactic reaction after intravenous challenge of OVA in OVA-TCR transgenic mice, which might represent a model for food allergy. By using this model, w

Prediagnostic breast milk DNA methylation alterations in women who develop breast cancer.

Prior candidate gene studies have shown tumor suppressor DNA methylation in breast milk related with history of breast biopsy, an established risk factor for breast cancer. To further establish the utility of breast milk as a tissue-specific biospecimen for investigations of breast carcinogenesis, we measured genome-wide DNA methylation in breast milk from women with and without a diagnosis of breast cancer in two independent cohorts. DNA methylation was assessed using Illumina HumanMethylation450k in 87 breast milk samples. Through an epigenome-wide association study we explored CpG sites ass

The calming effect of a maternal breast milk odor on the human newborn infant.

We examined the effects of the odors from mother's milk, other mother's milk and formula milk on pain responses in newborns undergoing routine heelsticks. Forty-eight healthy infants were assigned to four groups, an own mother's breast milk odor group (Own MM), another mother's breast milk odor group (Other MM), a formula milk odor group (Formula M) and a control group. To assess infant distress in response to the heelsticks, their crying, grimacing and motor activities were recorded during the experiment as behavioral indices of the pain response. After the heelstick, the behavioral indices o

Risk Factors Predicting Infectious Lactational Mastitis: Decision Tree Approach versus Logistic Regression Analysis.

Objectives Lactational mastitis frequently leads to a premature abandonment of breastfeeding; its development has been associated with several risk factors. This study aims to use a decision tree (DT) approach to establish the main risk factors involved in mastitis and to compare its performance for predicting this condition with a stepwise logistic regression (LR) model. Methods Data from 368 cases (breastfeeding women with mastitis) and 148 controls were collected by a questionnaire about risk factors related to medical history of mother and infant, pregnancy, delivery, postpartum, and breas

Influence of own mother's milk on bronchopulmonary dysplasia and costs.

BACKGROUND: Human milk from the infant's mother (own mother's milk; OMM) feedings reduces the risk of several morbidities in very low birthweight (VLBW) infants, but limited data exist regarding its impact on bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD). OBJECTIVE: To prospectively study the impact of OMM received in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) on the risk of BPD and associated costs. DESIGN/METHODS: A 5-year prospective cohort study of the impact of OMM dose on growth, morbidity and NICU costs in VLBW infants. OMM dose was the proportion of enteral intake that consisted of OMM from birth to

Maternal opioids downregulate adiponectin receptor signaling and alter growth in offspring: pilot study.

Opioid use disorder (OUD) has been linked to cardiometabolic diseases in adults through reductions in adiponectin-an adipocytokine with insulin-sensitizing effects. Opioid use during pregnancy dysregulates neonatal growth and may predispose to adult-onset diseases, but the impact of maternal OUD on neonatal adiponectin signaling has not been studied. As receptor activation is important for physiological effects, we made a priori decision to measure adiponectin receptor expression. We hypothesize that maternal OUD also reduces adiponectin receptor level in offspring (primary outcome) and alters

Associations between breastfeeding intention, breastfeeding practices and post-natal depression during the COVID-19 pandemic: A multi-country cross-sectional study.

Associations between breastfeeding intention, duration and post-natal depression (PND) have been shown in pre-COVID-19 studies. However, studies during COVID-19 have not examined the associations between breastfeeding intention, breastfeeding practices, and PND in an international sample of post-natal women, taking into consideration COVID-19 related factors. This is the first study to address this gap as both PND and breastfeeding may be affected by COVID-19, and have important long-term effects on women's and infant's health. A cross-sectional internet-based survey was conducted with 3253 po

Maintaining Breastfeeding During Severe Infant and Maternal HSV-1 Infection: A Case Report.

INTRODUCTION: Childbearing women with primary or secondary Herpes Simplex Virus type 1 infection are at risk of transmitting neonatal herpes infection to their infants; a medical emergency that is associated with high mortality and morbidity. Neonatal herpes infection has been commonly associated with Herpes Simplex Virus type 2, or genital herpes, but can be caused by either subtype and the presentations are indistinguishable. This case describes the course of diagnosis, treatment, and recovery for a mother and infant during a severe maternal and neonatal herpes infection, and how lactation w

Effects of Bisphenol A Exposure during Pregnancy and lactation on Hippocampal Function in Newborn Rats.

Bisphenol A (BPA) is widely used in industrial production. It is closely related to the growth and development of the nervous system, and can enter the fetal circulation through the placental barrier, and can be secreted through breast milk. The development of nervous system is very important in fetus and neonatal period. The purpose of this study is to investigate the effects of different doses of BPA on learning and memory function of nervous system in rats. Pregnant rats were randomly divided into three treatment groups (control group, 5 mg/kg/d, 50 mg/kg/d). All animals received BPA from t

Fortification of Breast Milk With Preterm Formula Powder vs Human Milk Fortifier in Preterm Neonates: A Randomized Noninferiority Trial.

IMPORTANCE: Fortification of expressed breast milk (EBM) using commercially available human milk fortifiers (HMF) increases short-term weight and length in preterm very low-birth-weight (VLBW) neonates. However, the high cost and increased risk of feed intolerance limit their widespread use. Preterm formula powder fortification (PTF) might be a better alternative in resource-limited settings. OBJECTIVE: To demonstrate that fortification of EBM by preterm formula powder is noninferior to fortification by HMF, in terms of short-term weight gain, in VLBW neonates. Essential minerals in colostrum of preterm and full-term Ghanaian mothers and related maternal factors.

Mineral elements in colostrum play crucial roles in neonatal growth and development. This study assessed the concentrations of ten essential mineral elements in the colostrum of moderately preterm and full-term mothers in Ghana, and examined their associations with maternal characteristics. A total of 47 mothers provided single 12 mL colostrum samples collected between postpartum days 1 to 4 using standardized, aseptic manual expression procedures. The samples were digested and analyzed using ICP-OES. Statistical analyses included tests for normality, Spearman correlation, and group comparison

Mechanistic Pathways of Gestational Obesity: Implications for Maternal and Offspring Health: A Narrative Review.

Gestational obesity, defined as obesity during pregnancy or a pre-pregnancy BMI ≥30, is a growing global health challenge with profound implications for both maternal and offspring health. This narrative review synthesizes current evidence on the mechanistic pathways by which maternal obesity affects pregnancy outcomes and intergenerational health trajectories. For mothers, gestational obesity increases the risk of gestational diabetes, hypertensive disorders, cesarean delivery, and postpartum weight retention. Offspring exposed to maternal obesity face higher risks of obesity, metabolic syndr

The clinical impact of maternal weight on offspring health: lights and shadows in breast milk metabolome.

INTRODUCTION: Pre-pregnancy overweight and obesity, depending on maternal nutrition and metabolic state, can influence fetal, neonatal, and long-term offspring health, regarding cardio-metabolic, respiratory, immunological, and cognitive outcomes. Thus, maternal weight can act, through mechanisms not fully understood, on the physiology and metabolism of some fetal organs and tissues, to adapt themselves to the intrauterine environment and nutritional reserves. These effects can occur by modulating gene expression, neonatal microbiome, and through breastfeeding. AREAS COVERED: In this paper, w

Stage-specific effects of nanoplastic exposure on neurodevelopment and offspring behavior.

With the continuous increase in plastic production, nanoplastics (NPs) derived from degrading plastic products have emerged as a critical environmental pollutant. NPs have been found in the human placenta and breast milk; however, the potential effects of NP exposure in various developmental stages remain elusive and require further investigation. We aimed to investigate the effects of maternal NP exposure on neurodevelopment during the embryonic and postnatal periods. First, mice exposed to 100 μg/mL NPs in the embryonic or postnatal stage demonstrated reduced problem-solving proficiency and

Rethinking pharmacokinetics in preterm and term neonates and infants: sex as a critical biological variable.

INTRODUCTION: Neonates and infants are not 'small adults.' Rapid developmental changes in body size, composition, organ function, and enzyme and transporter expression profoundly influence pharmacokinetics (PK). In the last decades, sex emerged as an underrecognized variable affecting growth, metabolism, and drug disposition even in early life. AREA COVERED: This review critically evaluates evidence on the ontogeny of absorption, distribution, metabolism, and excretion (ADME) in neonates and infants (0-24 months). Key factors influencing PK include gestational and postnatal age, feeding, gut

DCIS Progression and the Tumor Microenvironment: Molecular Insights and Prognostic Challenges.

Ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS) is the most common form of non-invasive breast cancer and a recognized precursor to invasive ductal carcinoma (IDC). Although DCIS itself is confined to the milk duct and not immediately life-threatening, its potential for progression to invasive disease necessitates careful clinical management. The increased detection of DCIS due to advancements in imaging and widespread screening programs has raised critical questions regarding its classification, prognosis, and optimal treatment strategies. While most cases exhibit indolent behavior, others harbor molecular c

Effects on the reproductive parameters of two generations of Rattus norvegicus offspring from dams exposed to heptachlor during gestation and lactation.

Heptachlor has been targeted for global elimination because of its toxicity and environmental persistence, in accordance with the Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs). However, there is no regulation of heptachlor use in Mexico, where relatively high levels have been found in maternal breast milk. The aim of this study was to determine the effects of heptachlor on the reproductive system of offspring of two consecutive generations of rats (F1 and F2) from dams orally administered heptachlor during midgestation and lactation. Female offspring were analyzed for different
