Infected bronchogenic cyst due to Mycobacterium avium in an immunocompetent patient.

We present a patient with intermittent pain over the right chest for 2 years. Computed tomograph of the chest disclosed a cystic tumor over the right posterior basal lung. Pathological examinations of the excised tumor disclosed a granulomatous inflammation within the multilocular bronchogenic cysts and microbiological culture of the tissue yielded Mycobacterium avium. This is the first reported case of infected bronchogenic cyst caused by M. avium in humans.

Total anomalous pulmonary venous connection with bronchogenic cyst in neonatal period.

Here, we report a case of a two-day-old neonate with total anomalous pulmonary venous connection to the innominate vein and a bronchogenic cyst arising from the trachea. Antenatal echocardiography had delineated both cardiac and extracardiac lesions, and a repeated examination on the day of birth disclosed progressive enlargement in the cyst in a manner so as to obstruct the innominate vein. On the second day of life, the patient underwent complete correction of the cardiac lesion and total excision of the cyst. The patient recovered uneventfully and was discharged on the thirteenth postoperat…

Persisting unilateral lung hypoperfusion after resection of a subcarinal bronchogenic cyst.

As a rare malformation with a wide variety of clinical modes of presentation, the bronchogenic cyst remains a diagnostic challenge. We report a case with a subcarinal bronchogenic cyst and stenosis of the left main bronchus presenting as "unilateral hyperlucent lung". Hypoplasia of the ipsilateral pulmonary vascular system persisted after surgical restitution of ventilation and is most likely due to an associated vascular malformation. Alternatively, anatomical fixation of pulmonary reflex vasoconstriction can be discussed.

[A case of giant bronchogenic cyst complicated with postoperative esophageal perforation].

A 42-year-old man with giant bronchogenic cyst occupied from the middle and posterior mediastinum was treated surgically. The tumor was stoutly adhered to anterior aspect of the esophagus and membranous portion of the right bronchus. In dissecting the tumor, muscular coat of the esophagus was partly severed, which was repaired interruptedly with absorbable suture material. However, esophageal perforation was detected by barium swallow on the 3rd postoperative day. Conservative therapy included intrathoracic drainage and antibiotics was successfully undertaken. It is imperative to dissect the t…

Unilocular thymic cyst with features of intra-thymic bronchogenic cyst: A clinicopathological correlation of 4 cases.

Four cases of primary unilocular thymic with features of bronchogenic cyst are presented. The patients are three men and a woman between the ages of 43 and 57 years. All the patients presented with symptoms of cough, chest pain, and dyspnea. Diagnostic imaging revealed the presence of an anterior mediastinal cystic lesion. Initial mediastinoscopic biopsies were non-diagnostic. Surgical resection of the anterior mediastinal cystic lesion was performed in all patients. Macroscopically, all the lesions were described as large cystic lesions measuring from 2 to 4 cm in largest diameter and contain…

Coexistence of mediastinal teratoma and intrapulmonary bronchogenic cyst: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Mediastinal masses are relatively common in pediatric populations, but their coexistence with bronchogenic cysts is extremely rare. Such cases present diagnostic and therapeutic challenges owing to overlapping features and the need for precise identification to guide appropriate management. Reporting this unusual combination enhances awareness and contributes to the understanding of their clinical presentation and treatment. CASE PRESENTATION: A 15-year-old female of Iranian ethnicity presented with a 3-month history of persistent, nonproductive cough unresponsive to standard medi…

Ectopic retroperitoneal bronchogenic cyst mimicking an adrenal hematoma: A case report.

A bronchogenic cyst (BC) is a rare congenital bronchopulmonary malformation, typically found in the thoracic cavity and rarely found in the retroperitoneum. Due to its anatomical location, BCs are often misdiagnosed as adrenal or pancreatic solid tumors on radiological evaluation. The present study reports a case of an ectopic BC (EBC) in a patient who presented with left-sided lumbar pain and fever. Initial imaging suggested a cyst in the adrenal region, complicated by hemorrhage and infection. However, after posterior laparoscopic surgery, pathological analysis confirmed the diagnosis of an …

[Clinical analysis of 21 cases of children with ectopic bronchogenic cyst].

Objective: To analyze the clinical characteristics, treatment, and prognosis of ectopic bronchogenic cysts in children. Methods: A retrospective analysis was conducted on the data including the clinical characteristics, auxiliary examination and treatment of 21 children with ectopic bronchogenic cysts diagnosed pathologically at Children's Hospital Affiliated to Zhengzhou University from July 2015 to December 2023. There were 16 males and 5 females, with a male-female ratio of 3.2∶1, and the age ranged from 4 days to 8 years old (median age 2 years and 8 months). Results: Among the 21 cases of…

A rare case of pelvic bronchogenic cyst treated by laparoscopic surgery.

A 31-year-old man with pain in his thigh was diagnosed with a benign presacral cystic mass. We performed laparoscopic subtotal resection of the cyst utilizing mobilization of a total mesorectal excision procedure used in low anterior resection for rectal cancer. Histopathological findings showed that the cystic lumen of the specimen was lined with pseudostratified columnar ciliated epithelium and had glandular structures and smooth muscle in its wall, leading to a diagnosis of bronchogenic cyst. The postoperative course was uneventful, and as of 6 months after surgery, the patient was doing we…

Delayed Bleeding of Coronary Artery after Thoracoscopic Intradiaphragmatic Bronchogenic Cyst Resection.

Bronchogenic cyst occurring in the diaphragm is rare and thoracoscopic cyst resection is mainly effective treatment. The coronary artery bleeding after video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS) has never been described; here we report a case of left coronary artery injury after thoracoscopic itradiaphragmatic bronchogenic cyst resection, which may be caused by metallic troca or chest tube.

A Rare Case of Mediastinal Bronchogenic Cyst Infected by Salmonella enteritidis.

Bronchogenic cysts are rare congenital malformations which arise from abnormal budding of the primitive tracheobronchial tube and can localize to either the mediastinum or lung parenchyma. They remain clinically silent in most adults unless they become infected or are large enough to compress adjacent structures. Infections involving bronchogenic cysts are often polymicrobial. Gram-positive, Gram-negative, and mycobacterial infections have been reported, though frequently a pathogen is not identified. We present the case of a 46-year-old female with known history of bronchogenic cyst who prese…

Video-assisted thoracoscopic resection of recurrent intrapulmonary bronchogenic cyst after thoracotomy.

Intrapulmonary bronchogenic cysts are typically treated surgically by lobectomy to completely excise the cyst to minimize risk for recurrence. Video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery is being used with increasing frequency to manage intrathoracic pathology. We present a patient who underwent resection of a bronchogenic cyst 20 years before. She developed a symptomatic recurrence, and video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery was used to lyse adhesions from her previous posterolateral thoracotomy and perform an intraparenchymal dissection to resect the pathologic lesion while sparing the remaining pare…
