Modeling the transmission dynamics of Ebola virus disease in Liberia.

Ebola virus disease (EVD) has erupted many times in some zones since it was first found in 1976. The 2014 EVD outbreak in West Africa is the … ic reproduction number. Furthermore, we study the influence of control measures (isolation and safe burial measures) on EVD outbreak. It is found that if combined control measures are taken, the basic reproduction number will be less than one and thus EVD in Liberia may be well contained. The obtained results may provide new guidance to prevent and contr …

Nutrition-related health problems in a wealthy 17-18th century German community in Jelgava, Latvia.

The aim of this research is to assess the presence of stress in a high status German population from Jelgava, Latvia. The skeletal material used in this study came from a recently excavated church cemetery, with most of the burials dating to the 17-18th centuries. In total, 108 individuals (80 adults and 28 non-adults) were analysed for evidence of scurvy, rickets/osteomalacia and anaemia. The presence of scurvy and healed rickets/osteomalacia could not be confirmed in any adult individual. Among non-adults, a possible diagnosis of scurvy was considered in six individuals, and active rickets w…

A prehistoric example of polydactyly from the Iron Age site of Simbusenga, Zambia.

Human burials, dated AD 1100-1500, were examined from the Iron Age site of Simbusenga, located some 35 miles northwest of Victoria Falls in Zambia. Pedal polydactyly was discovered in the fragmentary remains of a young adult of indeterminate sex aged 14-25. The preaxial form of polydactyly is indicated with bilateral involvement of the first metatarsals. There is incomplete hypoplastic duplication of both first metatarsals with broad heads for the metatarsal-phalangeal joints. No digital malformations were found in the other seven individuals with feet and/or hands from the site. Several studi…

Frequency analysis of the delta32ccr5 HIV resistance allele in a medieval plague mass grave.

The 32 basepair deletion in the gene for the human chemokine receptor CCR5 (delta32ccr5) conferring resistance against HIV-1 infection is pr … ic in Lübeck, Northern Germany, and compared them to the frequency in a control group from the same burial site, dating from the time before the first Plague pandemic. If the delta32ccr5 allele conferred an at least partial resistance against the medieval Plague, its frequency would be expected to be lower in those that died in the pandemic, than it was …

Double dehiscence (Superior semicircular canal and tegmen tympani) in the epicampaniform period (Arboli type).

PURPOSE: Although the superior semicircular canal dehiscence syndrome was described at the end of the 20th century, we want to check if it is a pathology that has existed since ancient times, through the anthropological study of bone remains. METHODS: We have carried out an anthropological and radiological study (CT scan) of 8 skulls found in caves, as secondary burials of the Arbolí type epicampaniform culture (1800 - 1700 BC) on the Iberian Peninsula. RESULTS: The 8 skulls (16 temporal bones) show a grade 4 degree of pneumatisation or hyperpneumatization. One of these skulls, belonging to …

Global dynamics of a compartmental model to assess the effect of transmission from deceased.

During several epidemics, transmission from deceased people significantly contributed to disease spread, but mathematical analysis of this transmission has not been seen in the literature numerously. Transmission of Ebola during traditional burials was the most well-known example; however, there are several other diseases, such as hepatitis, plague or Nipah virus, that can potentially be transmitted from disease victims. This is especially true in the case of serious epidemics when healthcare is overwhelmed and the operative capacity of the health sector is diminished, such as seen during the …

Delayed Diagnosis of Buried Bumper Syndrome When Only the Jejunostomy Extension is Used in a Percutaneous Endoscopic Gastrostomy-jejunostomy Levodopa-carbidopa Intestinal Gel Delivery System.

Direct intrajejunal levodopa-carbidopa intestinal gel (LCIG) administered through a percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy (PEG) with a jejunal extension tube (PEG-J) is an FDA-approved modality for treatment of patients with advanced Parkinson's disease (PD). Buried bumper syndrome (BBS) is a rare complication associated with PEG tubes inserted for drug administration or enteral feeding. The syndrome is diagnosed endoscopically revealing burial of the internal bumper in the gastric wall, causing numerous serious complications. When only the J extension of a PEG-J is used to deliver medications, …

A giant urinary bladder stone in the mummy of Lebanese Maronite Patriarch Joseph Tyan (1760-1820) and its environmental and nutritional implications.

INTRODUCTION: Historical sources and anthropological investigations, with the indispensable support of radiology, bring to light pathological evidence of the past. CASE PRESENTATION: The purpose of this article is to present the radiological investigation conducted on the mummy of the Maronite Joseph Tyan (1760-1820), a famous patriarch who guided the Lebanese Maronite community during a critical period of its history. The natural mummy of the Patriarch was temporarily removed from its burial site to certify the degree of preservation. Conventional radiography was necessary to determine the s…

[Health status and life style in Castel Malnome (Rome, I-II cent. A. D.)].

The necropolis of Castel Malnome, chronologically framed between the I and II century AD, is located in the vicinity of Ponte Galeria (Rome), nearby the via Portuense. The excavation of the funerary site has allowed the collection of 292 inhumations, referred to the lower social classes and for the most part adult males. Regarding the funerary ritual, only the 42.8% of the graves had a tiles cover, while about one third provided grave goods. The field analysis shows that almost all the burials are primaries, and is not possible to highlight a main position of the inhumated individuals. The lab…

Dental status and orthodontic treatment needs of an 11-year-old female resident of Athens, 430 BC.

This report presents the skeletal and dental features of "Myrtis", an 11-year-old female resident of ancient Athens back in 430 BC. Her skeleton was unearthed in an archaeological excavation of a mass burial pit located in the outskirts of Kerameikos' ancient cemetery of Athens. "Myrtis" is believed to have been one of the numerous hapless victims of the Plague of Athens. Her skull was found in relatively intact condition bearing her complete dentition corresponding to the mixed dentition stage. A complete dental and orthodontic diagnosis of Myrtis was conducted based on clinical examination, …

New human teeth from Middle Stone Age deposits at Klasies River, South Africa.

Since 1984, the main site at Klasies River has been re-investigated. Human remains, animal bones and stone artefacts have been collected fro … ison to black South African homologues, but MD and BL dimensions fall close to the averages for San burials. This evidence confirms that several of the Klasies individuals have very small molars, while others have cheek teeth that are close to the upper limits for size variation in recent Africans. The new material is in keeping with the view that sex di …

History of arthritis and bone rarefaction evidence from paleopathology onwards.

Review of medical and archaeological papers reveals that osteoarthritis has been common in humans and hominids since Paleolithic times. In the British Isles, there was a particularly high prevalence in remains from Romano-British and Saxon burials suggesting that, whatever genetic factors there may have been, there was an extremely high level of physical activity. The prevalence of the condition was lower in late Medieval times; and, in at least one study of subjects from the 18th and 19th centuries, lower than in the current population. In early times, there was a reduction in bone density wh…

Unearthing forensic genetics: preliminary results on the ability to generate DNA profiles from buried human biological samples.

Burying objects with biological material is a common procedure in many crimes, intending to hide and/or accelerate the process of degradation of the possible biological information they may contain. In this sense, the central question of this preliminary study concerns investigating the impact of a burial process on the degradation of genetic material, specifically on blood and saliva samples, compared to the same type of samples deposited on the surface. Saliva and blood samples were methodically positioned on a white cotton T-shirt, with half of the samples being buried and the other half pl…

Removal of nutrients in various types of constructed wetlands.

The processes that affect removal and retention of nitrogen during wastewater treatment in constructed wetlands (CWs) are manifold and include NH(3) volatilization, nitrification, denitrification, nitrogen fixation, plant and microbial uptake, mineralization (ammonification), nitrate reduction to ammonium (nitrate-ammonification), anaerobic ammonia oxidation (ANAMMOX), fragmentation, sorption, desorption, burial, and leaching. However, only few processes ultimately remove total nitrogen from the wastewater while most processes just convert nitrogen to its various forms. Removal of total nitrog…

A Prehispanic infant from Tenerife with diffuse microporotic lesions.

We describe diffuse microporotic lesions observed in most of the scattered skeletal remains belonging to a ≈ 6 months-old female (genetic sexing) prehispanic (antiquity ≈ 600 years BP) individual recovered from a small recess of a basaltic burial cave in the highlands (2300 m above sea level) of Tenerife. Although sphenoid wings were lacking, microporotic lesions were present in several bones, especially in the hard palate, basilar part of the occipital bone, outer aspect of the maxilla, and proximal half of the right humerus, accompanied by a subtle periosteal reaction. Although non-specific,…
