Migratory monarchs that encounter resident monarchs show life-history differences and higher rates of parasite infection.

Environmental change induces some wildlife populations to shift from migratory to resident behaviours. Newly formed resident populations could influence the health and behaviour of remaining migrants. We investigated migrant-resident interactions among monarch butterflies and consequences for life history and parasitism. Eastern North American monarchs migrate annually to Mexico, but some now breed year-round on exotic milkweed in the southern US and experience high infection prevalence of protozoan parasites. Using stable isotopes (δ2 H, δ13 C) and cardenolide profiles to estimate natal origi

Sphingidae moths as a new host record for Ophryocystis aff. elektroscirrha (Apicomplexa: Neogregarinida) in Brazil.

Ophryocystis elektroscirrha is a parasite primarily described in Danaini butterflies. We investigated the occurrence of Ophryocystis-like cysts in lepidopterans from collections and field samplings in Mato Grosso, Brazil. We report the first record of Ophryocystis aff. elektroscirrha in Lepidoptera from Brazil and the first worldwide record in the Sphingidae (Eumorpha analis and Agrius cingulata). No infections were detected in Danaus species. Our findings suggest that the known host range of Ophryocystis is underestimated. We highlight the importance of examining non-traditional host groups a

A Case of Recessive Dystrophic Epidermolysis Bullosa Associated Colitis.

Recessive dystrophic epidermolysis bullosa (EB) is a rare disease characterized by painful blistering and erosion of the skin, sometimes referred to as "butterfly skin disease" because patients' skin becomes as fragile as butterfly wings. In addition to severe dermatologic manifestations, EB patients also experience complications affecting epithelial surfaces including the gastrointestinal tract. While gastrointestinal complications such as oral mucosal ulceration, esophageal strictures, constipation, and gastroesophageal reflux are common in EB patients, reports of colitis are rare. Here we d

Insufficiency fractures of the sacrum: a cause of low back pain after lung transplantation.

Insufficiency fractures of the sacrum were diagnosed during the first year after successful transplantation in four (5.6%) of 71 lung and heart-lung transplant recipients. Each patient had development of low back pain after minor or no trauma; all had osteoporosis. In each instance, plain radiographs failed to demonstrate the fracture, and the diagnosis was established by radionuclide bone scanning that demonstrated the characteristic "butterfly" (bilateral sacral fracture) or "half-butterfly" appearance (unilateral sacral fracture). Sacral insufficiency fractures, a significant cause of low b

What makes eyespots intimidating-the importance of pairedness.

BACKGROUND: Many butterflies possess striking structures called eyespots on their wings, and several studies have sought to understand the selective forces that have shaped their evolution. Work over the last decade has shown that a major function of eyespots is their ability to reduce predation by being intimidating to attacking predators. Two competing hypotheses seek to explain the cause of intimidation, one suggesting 'eye-mimicry' and the other their 'conspicuousness' as the reason. There is an on-going debate about which of these better explains the effectiveness of eyespots against pred

Exploring eye-hand coordination in central field loss with virtual reality.

Eye-hand coordination relies on accurate depth perception and gaze control, both of which are impaired in central field loss (CFL). Using an immersive VR paradigm, we examined how CFL affects gaze and hand control during a dynamic 3D butterfly-catching task. Seven patients with CFL and 13 controls performed three conditions: eye-tracking only (following the butterfly with gaze), hand-tracking (keeping the butterfly centered in a virtual net), and catching (capturing it). Patients performed all conditions binocularly and monocularly, while controls additionally performed them with a simulated s

Topological Phenomena in Artificial Quantum Materials Revealed by Local Chern Markers.

A striking example of frustration in physics is Hofstadter's butterfly, a fractal structure that emerges from the competition between a crystal's lattice periodicity and the magnetic length of an applied field. Current methods for predicting the topological invariants associated with Hofstadter's butterfly are challenging or impossible to apply to a range of materials, including those that are disordered or lack a bulk spectral gap. Here, we demonstrate a framework for predicting a material's local Chern markers using its position-space description and validate it against experimental observat

Allowing caterpillar locomotion on any substrates: towards hybrid soft robots design.

Soft robotics draws inspiration from nature to develop efficient locomotion strategies. Among natural organisms, caterpillars serve as excellent biomimetic models by exploiting body elasticity and substrate adhesion. Building on previous studies, this work employs a crawling model that represents the body as spring-linked masses, interacting with the environment via threshold-based adhesion and Winkler-like springs. To experimentally further validate this theoretical framework, we analysed the locomotion of Pieris brassicae larvae across substrates with diverse morphologies: wood, steel, slate

The people behind the papers - Ximena Gutiérrez Ramos and Leslie Pick.

Body segmentation is an essential process in development that occurs simultaneously in some insect species but sequentially in others. Whether these two modes of body segmentation are controlled by the same molecular mechanisms, however, is unclear. In a new study, Leslie Pick and colleagues establish the painted butterfly Vanessa cardui as an emerging model of sequential body segmentation and evaluate the level of evolutionary conservation of body segmentation genes from simultaneously segmenting Drosophila fruit flies, as well as other species. Active Rejection of Non-Host Plants Across Families in Papilio xuthus Revealed by Tarsal Multi-Feature Spike Sorting.

Herbivorous insects must identify suitable host plants for egg-laying and reliably reject unsuitable ones, but whether non-host plants are actively rejected through deterrent cues, or simply fail to trigger host-recognition signals, remains unclear. We addressed this question in the swallowtail butterfly Papilio xuthus by combining oviposition behavior trials with electrophysiological recordings from taste sensilla on the female forelegs. Females primed with a Citrus (host plant) extract laid eggs on a plain water control 51.5% of the time, providing an operational post-priming baseline for ov

Horseshoe adrenal gland associated with spinal and vascular anomalies.

Horseshoe (or butterfly) adrenal gland (HAG) is an exceedingly rare congenital abnormality compared to horseshoe kidney. Here we present computed tomography findings of HAG in a 70-year-old man, associated with some spinal and vascular abnormalities; in addition, a brief review of HAG in adult people is presented. In our case, spinal anomalies included a severe scoliosis, a "butterfly" deformation of Th9 vertebra and the presence of a "split lumbosacral thecal sac" at L5 level. As regards, vascular anomalies, they were noted: the origin of the left common carotid artery from the innominate art

A modified anchored suturing technique for enhanced flap stability in periodontal plastic surgery: A case series.

BACKGROUND: Gingival recession is a common mucogingival condition that may cause esthetic concerns, root sensitivity, and functional problems. Tunneling techniques with connective tissue grafts (CTGs) are well established for root coverage and esthetic preservation. Various suspensory sutures have been proposed to stabilize coronally advanced flaps. The butterfly suture is a modified anchored approach intended to provide simultaneous stabilization of interproximal and midfacial areas. This case series describes the clinical application and short-term outcomes of this technique. METHODS: Three

Structural and Functional Characteristics of FMN-Dependent NADPH-Indigo Reductase Homolog from Bacillus cohnii.

We found indigo reductase homolog in Bacillus cohnii gene and succeeded in production of a large amount of the recombinant homolog in Escherichia coli. The homolog exhibited FMN-dependent NADPH-quinone reductase activity, but not indigo-reducing activity. Crystal structure analysis of the enzyme revealed the formation of a binary complex with FMN, 2-propanol, and glycerol, determined at a resolution of 1.57 Å. Notably, the structure of FMN was of particular interest, as the isoalloxazine ring of FMN exhibited a butterfly-like bent conformation, with an angular deviation of approximately 9.4º t

Ciliary and retinal changes in myotonic dystrophy.

We examined 15 patients with myotonic dystrophy by cycloscopy, ophthalmoscopy, and fluorescein angiography. In six cases, we found depigmentation in the relatively short ciliary processes, which may account for ocular hypotony in this disorder. Eight of the patients had retinal lesions, three with butterfly-shaped dystrophy, two with reticular dystrophy, and three with peripheral yellow flecks. These lesions were biomicroscopically at the level of the retinal pigment epithelium or in the deep retinal layer and did not substantially alter visual functions. Psychophysical and electrophysiologic

A Novel Functional Ingredient Derived From a Mixture of Mulberry (Morus alba L.) Leaves and Butterfly Pea (Clitoria ternatea L.) Flowers Enhances Rapid Eye Movement Sleep, Cognitive Function, and Anxiolytic Behavior via GABAA Receptor-Dependent Mechanism in Rats.

The neuropharmacological benefits for sleep quality and mental health from the extracts of Morus alba L. leaves (MA) and Clitoria ternatea L. flowers (CT) have been revealed previously. However, due to synergistic interactions of polyherbal ingredients, the positive effects of MA mixed with CT are still controversial. Preliminary outcomes from in vitro assessment exposed that a 3:1 ratio of MA:CT (MACT) yielded the highest antioxidant capacity and gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA)-promoting activity among seven combination ratios: 0MA:1CT, 1MA:0CT, 1MA:1CT, 1MA:2CT, 1MA:3CT, 2MA:1CT, and 3MA:1CT.

Insect-associated bacterial communities across an anthropogenic landscape.

UNLABELLED: Anthropogenic activities induce drastic changes in land use that are at least partly responsible for the ongoing global patterns of macro-biodiversity erosion. These habitat changes also impact the fitness of the resilient species, through direct effects on diet and/or indirect environmental effects. Although microbial communities associated with species can crucially influence a diverse set of their host's biological functions, studies on how microbial communities associated with wild species respond to habitat degradation remain scarce. We use metacommunities of two sympatric her

Identification and Synthesis of a Macrolide as an Anti-aphrodisiac Pheromone from Males of Heliconius erato phyllis.

Investigation of the contents of the scent glands of the heliconiine butterfly Heliconius erato phyllis via gas chromatography/electroantennography revealed an unprecedented active compound. The males transfer this compound to females during mating. The structure of (2R,6E,10R)-2,6-dimethyl-6-undecen-10-olide, a derivative of geranylacetone, was proposed on the basis of infrared and mass spectrometry spectra and microderivatization and confirmed by racemic and stereoselective syntheses. Bioassays with the synthetic macrolide showed the repellency of this compound, termed phyllisolide, when app

Better safe than wealthy: Dysfunctional risk avoidance in spider-fearful individuals.

Previous research has documented that fearful individuals avoid fear-relevant cues even if they incur costs in doing so. Paradigms that were previously used to study avoidance in the lab, manipulated reward contingencies in favor of selecting either fear-relevant or neutral cues, e.g., spiders versus butterflies. We, thus, developed a paradigm where the chance of monetary gains was linked with increasing probability of a fear-relevant or a neutral outcome. To this end, we modified the well-established Balloon Analogue Risk Task (BART) to include fear-relevant outcomes. Individuals with and wit

The effect of pyriproxyfen on the concentration of circulating metabolic fuel molecules and chemical elements in the hemolymph of Acraea horta L. (Lepidoptera: Nymphalidae): A quantitative analysis.

Many pollinating insects expand their niche to adjacent agricultural areas and are, therefore, exposed to chemical insecticides. Acraea horta L. (Lepidoptera: Nymphalidae) is a pollinator butterfly widely distributed in the Southern African region. The objectives of this work were to evaluate carbohydrate, lipid and chemical elements in the hemolymph of A. horta exposed to pyriproxyfen, a juvenile hormone analog (JHA). Last instar larvae (L6: day 1 or day 2) were topically exposed to an aqueous solution of pyriproxyfen (100 μg of the active ingredient per insect) or to diluent (control group).

The Ingestion of Fluorescent, Magnetic Nanoparticles for Determining Fluid-uptake Abilities in Insects.

Fluid-feeding insects ingest a variety of liquids, which are present in the environment as pools, films, or confined to small pores. Studies of liquid acquisition require assessing mouthpart structure and function relationships; however, fluid uptake mechanisms are historically inferred from observations of structural architecture, sometimes unaccompanied with experimental evidence. Here, we report a novel method for assessing fluid-uptake abilities with butterflies (Lepidoptera) and flies (Diptera) using small amounts of liquids. Insects are fed with a 20% sucrose solution mixed with fluoresc
