The effects of different concentrations of Cd on growth of maize (Zea mays L.) and metal uptake were investigated. Cd accumulations in roots and shoots and the interactions among other metals (Mn, Fe, Cu and Zn) were analyzed using inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrometry (ICP-AES). The concentrations of cadmium chloride (CdCl(2).2.5H2O) used ranged from 10(-4) M to 10(-6) M. Cd had stimulatory effects during the first 5 days on root length of Nongda No. 108 at 10(-6) M and 10(-5) M Cd concentrations. Seedlings exposed to 10(-4) M Cd solution exhibited substantial growth reducti…

1. Cadmium (Cd) is a ubiquitous environmental toxicant that can cause liver steatosis and nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) on long-term exposure.2. Sixteen Sprague Dawley rats were randomly divided into two groups, and were administered normal saline and 5 mg/(kg·d) cadmium chloride by gavage. In vitro, BRL3A cells, a rat normal liver cell line, were treated with different concentrations of Cd to verify the sequencing results.3. The RNA-seq revealed 146 upregulated genes and 127 downregulated genes in the Cd intervention group. The key genes of lipid metabolism were significantly overe…

Heavy metals are chemical elements with a specific gravity that is atleast five times that of water which is 1 at 4 degrees C. The commonly encountered heavy metals are lead, mercury, cadmium, and arsenic. Lead levels in children continue to be a health hazard as the current limit of 10 ug/dL is considered too high with the WHO estimate of 40% of children having blood levels greater than 5 ug/dL. Some authors have suggested a new limit should be set at 2 ug/dL. There are substantial differences in the literature regarding the effects of lead on hearing as assessed by pure tone audiometry. The effects of organic chloride-PVC and inorganic chloride-NaCl on Cd partitioning during sludge incineration with adding Cd(CH3COO)2 . 2H2O to the real sludge were investigated using a simulated tubular incineration furnace. And transformation and distribution of Cd were studied in different sludge incineration operation conditions. The results indicated that the partitioning of Cd tended to be enhanced in the fly ash and fule gas as the chloride content increasing. The migration and transformation of Cd-added sludge affected by different chloride were not obvious with the increasing of chlor

Due to rapid urbanization and industrialization, Cadmium (Cd) contamination is widespread. Meanwhile, the prevalence of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) has been increasing. Cd is linked to bone damage. However, the osteotoxicity of environmental Cd exposure in NAFLD remains unclear. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the effects and potential mechanisms of Cd on bone metabolism in NAFLD mice. NAFLD mice were treated with 50 mg/L cadmium chloride in drinking water for 12 weeks. Bone microstructures were scanned by Micro-CT. Liver lipid droplets and fibrosis were measured by his…

We have investigated the changes of cytosolic [Ca2+] and the secretory activity in single glomus cells dispersed from rabbit carotid bodies during exposure to solutions with variable O2 tension (Po2). In normoxic conditions (Po2 = 145 mmHg; 1 mmHg = 133 Pa), intracellular [Ca2+] was 58 +/- 29 nM, and switching to low Po2 (between 10 and 60 mmHg) led to a reversible increase of [Ca2+] up to 800 nM. The response to hypoxia completely disappeared after removal of external Ca2+ or with the addition of 0.2 mM Cd2+ to the external solution. These same solutions also abolished both the Ca2+ current o

Cadmium (Cd) is a common environmental pollutant and occupational toxicant that seriously affects various mammalian organs, especially the kidney. Iron ion is an essential trace element in the body, and the disorder of iron metabolism is involved in the development of multiple pathological processes. An iron overload can induce a new type of cell death, defined as ferroptosis. However, whether iron metabolism is abnormal in Cd-induced nephrotoxicity and the role of ferroptosis in Cd-induced nephrotoxicity need to be further elucidated. Sprague Dawley male rats were randomly assigned into three

This study explores the effectiveness of a new composite membrane fabricated from poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) and the UiO-66(COOH)2 metal-organic framework (MOF) for the removal of heavy metals from water. The electrospinning technique was successfully employed to homogeneously incorporate UiO-66(COOH)2 nanocrystals into PVC, producing fibrous composite membranes. The membranes were fully characterized using several techniques such as scanning electron microscopy (SEM), capillary flow porometry, powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and tensile strength analysis. Diatoms are especially important microorganisms because they constitute the larger group of microalgae. To survive the constant variations of the light environment, diatoms have developed mechanisms aiming at the dissipation of excess energy, such as the xanthophyll cycle and the non-photochemical chlorophyll (Chl) fluorescence quenching. This contribution is dedicated to the relaxation of the latter process when the adverse conditions cease. An original nonlinear regression analysis of the relaxation of non-photochemical Chl fluorescence quenching, qN, in diatoms is presented. It was used to

The study investigated the possibility of influencing immunotoxic effects of Cd through ascorbic acid. Guinea pigs with high and low intake of ascorbic acid were perorally exposed to cadmium chloride (1 mg Cd/animal/day). The daily vitamin C intake was 2 and 100 mg per animal, respectively. Phagocytic activity of polymorphonuclear leucocytes and monocytes as well as the percentage of active and total T lymphocytes in peripheral blood of animals were evaluated. Five- and 12-week experiments showed a mutual potentiation of negative effects of Cd on the immune system by suboptimal intake of ascor…

Cadmium (Cd) is a widespread environmental toxicant that poses significant threat to public health. After intake, Cd is distributed throughout the body via blood and lymphatic circulation. However, the effect of Cd on lymphatic vessels has not been revealed. In this study, mice were exposed to 10 μM cadmium chloride through drinking water immediately after corneal alkali burn. In vivo analyses showed that Cd treatment enhances the alkali burn-induced corneal lymphangiogenesis, which is characterized by increased expression of lymphatic vessel endothelial hyaluronan receptor 1 (LYVE-1), prosper…

The biosynthesis of quantum dots has been explored as an alternative to traditional physicochemical methods; however, relatively few studies have determined optimal synthesis parameters. Saccharomyces cerevisiae sequentially treated with sodium selenite and cadmium chloride synthesized CdSe quantum dots in the cytoplasm. These nanoparticles displayed a prominent yellow fluorescence, with an emission maximum of approximately 540 nm. The requirement for glutathione in the biosynthetic mechanism was explored by depleting its intracellular content through cellular treatments with 1-chloro-2,4-dini…

Closed microwave digestion and a high-pressure asher have been evaluated for wet-oxidation and extraction of lead, cadmium, chromium, and mercury from a range of typical packaging materials used for food products. For the high-pressure asher a combination of nitric and sulfuric acids was efficient for destruction of a range of packaging materials; for polystyrene, however, nitric acid alone was more efficient. For microwave digestion, a reagent containing nitric acid, sulfuric acid, and hydrogen peroxide was used for all materials except polystyrene. Use of the high-pressure asher resulted in

Cells require some metals, such as zinc and manganese, but excess levels of these metals can be toxic. As a result, cells have evolved complex mechanisms for maintaining metal homeostasis and surviving metal intoxication. Here, we present the results of a large-scale functional genomic screen in Drosophila cultured cells for modifiers of zinc chloride toxicity, together with transcriptomics data for wild-type or genetically zinc-sensitized cells challenged with mild zinc chloride supplementation. Altogether, we identified 47 genes for which knockdown conferred sensitivity or resistance to toxi

The exposure of humans and animals to environmental compounds is rarely restricted to a single chemical. Cadmium (Cd) and lead (Pb) are two heavy metals known to be the most toxic. Deleterious effects of each metal alone are well documented. Unfortunately, very few studies were conducted to determine their combined effect. Four groups of Wistar rats were treated intravenously for 15 days. The control group received physiological saline solution; groups 2 and 3 were treated with Cd chloride and lead acetate, respectively ; and the treatment group 4 received a combined treatment of Cd and Pb . Cadmium, a pervasive xenobiotic, contributes to cardiovascular morbidity and mortality. We investigated the molecular mechanisms of cadmium's impact on the myocardium of various heart chambers. Outbred male rats received 18 intraperitoneal injections of CdCl2 solution (0.377 mg/kg b.w.) or CdO nanoparticle (CdNP) suspension (0.25 mg/kg b.w.) over 6 weeks. Using an in vitro motility assay, we examined the sliding velocity of actin and regulated thin filaments over myosin, the fraction of motile filaments, calcium sensitivity and Hill cooperativity in "pCa-velocity" and "pCa-fraction of motile f
