INTRODUCTION: The phacoemulsification cataract surgery is the most frequently performed surgery and it generally improves vision in over 90% of the patients. Hyperopic patients are a challenge during phacoemulsification especially because of their short eyeball and shallow anterior chamber. A shallow anterior chamber is associated with overall reduction of the safe zone, which may lead to difficulty in creating the corneal incisions, harder capsulorhexis performing, or endothelial complications.
PURPOSE: The aim of the study was to present the endothelial cells loss after the phacoemulsificat

PURPOSE: To determine the effect of a capsular tension ring (CTR) implantation in preventing posterior capsular opacification (PCO) after cataract surgery in patients with high myopia.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this prospective single-surgeon standardized-surgical-procedure fellow-eye comparison trial, 34 patients with high myopia had phacoemulsification surgery. Although one eye received an acrylic intraocular lens (IOL) and CTR, other eye received only an IOL as control. PCO, within the capsulorhexis overlap, was documented by standardized digital retroillumination images at least 2 years p

PURPOSE: To develop and evaluate a model for the organ culture of human lens capsules that reduces problems inherent in preexisting models for the study of in vitro posterior capsule opacification (PCO).
METHODS: Human lenses (N = 110) were isolated from donor eyes and supported externally within a lens holder system by medical-grade cyanoacrylate glue, allowing visualization of the entire capsular bag. After capsulorhexis and lens extraction were performed, the capsule specimens were maintained at physiological conditions for up to 4 weeks. The area of lens epithelial cell (LEC) coverage ove

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Posterior capsular opacification (PCO) is caused by proliferation and migration of lens epithelial cells (LECs) across the posterior capsule and is the commonest cause of reduced vision after cataract surgery. The influence of intraocular lens (IOL) material on the process of LEC migration was studied.
METHODS: 90 eyes underwent standardised extracapsular surgery, with capsulorhexis and "in the bag" IOL placement. They were randomised to receive a three piece 6 mm lens of PMMA, silicone, or polyacrylic (AcrySof, Alcon, Fort Worth, TX, USA). On days 7, 30, 90, 180, and years 1

We report a case of anterior megalophthalmos and complicated cataract, with apparently smaller lens in both eyes. The right eye had spontaneous retinal detachment. The child underwent cataract surgery in both the eyes with retinal detachment surgery in the right eye. Due to small size of the lenticular bag, a downsized customized intraocular lens (IOL) was implanted. Postoperatively, the IOL was well centered with ambulatory vision till 3 years of follow-up. This case describes this rare disorder and its association with apparently small-sized lens and discusses the course of its management, h

A 72-year-old woman with cataract had phacoemulsification and intraocular lens implantation in the capsular bag with continuous curvilinear capsulorrhexis in the right eye. One day postoperatively, cortical remnants were noted between the posterior capsule and the intraocular lens optic located inferiorly. Uncorrected visual acuity was 1.0 and the patient was emmetropic. At a control visit 6 years postoperatively, the patient showed a hyperopic shift compared with the refraction of the first postoperative period with a best-corrected visual acuity of 0.4. A transparent liquefied substance that

The techniques and results of cataract surgery have changed dramatically during the past three decades. In the USA, we have moved from intracapsular cataract extraction as the preferred technique to almost exclusively extracapsular techniques. Smaller incisions have become the standard, with phacoemulsification now being the method of choice for most surgeons. Along with these advances have come improved intraocular lens materials and designs, especially well suited for use with smaller incisions. Phacoemulsification as a method to remove the cataractous lens was first proposed more than 20 ye
