The 1918 H1N1 influenza virus was responsible for one of the most deadly pandemics in human history. Yet to date, the structure component responsible for its virulence is still a mystery. Hyperprolinemia type I (HPI) is an autosomal recessive metabolic disorder caused by defects in proline oxidase. We herein describe a case of a patient with HPI and harboring the NM_016335.4 (PRODH_v001):c.1397 C > T (p.T466M) mutation and polymorphisms in the PRODH gene, as detected by plasma amino acid analysis and Sanger sequencing. The patient presented with short stature, carbohydrate-rich dietary preferences, and mild intellectual disability that was suggestive of a neurodevelopmental or learning disorder.

Trichosporon species cause wide varieties of fungal infections. White piedra, a superficial fungal infection on the hair shaft, is caused by Trichosporon species. We report here a case of white piedra over the scalp due to T. inkin, a rarely isolated pathogen from such a lesion. The identification of the fungus was confirmed on the basis of morphology, carbohydrate assimilation tests, and sequencing of the ITS region of rDNA. The available literature on infections due to T. inkin is also reviewed.
