A patient with systemic lupus erythematosus and elevated cardiolipin antibody levels was given low-dose aspirin therapy prior to and throughout her third pregnancy to minimize the risk of miscarriage. She delivered a boy at 38 weeks with the skeletal deformity of two thoracic hemivertebrae. The putative role of aspirin causing this birth defect is discussed.

A 34 year old woman with a history of five spontaneous abortions and a systemic lupus-like illness underwent cardiotomy for resection of a calcified right ventricular thrombus. At operation an anomalous right ventricular muscle bundle was discovered under the calcified thrombus. Clinical chemistry showed lupus anticoagulant activity and cardiolipin antibodies in the plasma.

The copper ionophore disulfiram (DSF) is commonly used to treat chronic alcoholism and has potential anti-cancer activity. Using a yeast-based screening assay of FDA-approved compounds, DSF was herein identified for its ability to improve oxidative phosphorylation-dependent growth of various yeast models of mitochondrial diseases caused by a wide range of defects in ATP synthase, complexes III and IV, cardiolipin remodeling, maintenance and translation of the mitochondrial genome. The patient, a 55 year-old man, developed an episode of transient global amnesia. He was a smoker and had hypercholesterolemia. He was found to have a positive rapid plasma reagin test and high levels of anticardiolipin antibodies. Other investigations were negative. The presence in this patient of antiphospholipid antibodies suggests a vascular mechanism for transient global amnesia.
