BACKGROUND: Sickle cell disease (SCD) is a hemoglobinopathy that affects one in 500 African Americans. Although it is well established that patients with SCD have left ventricular (LV) diastolic dysfunction, it is not clear whether they have subtle LV systolic dysfunction despite preserved ejection fraction (EF). We used three-dimensional speckle tracking echocardiography (3DSTE) to assess changes in both systolic and diastolic LV function in SCD.

Anti-viral activities of Agaricus blazei Murill were investigated. The water extracts of the cultured mycelia and fruiting bodies were fractionated with different concentrations of ethanol. To several viruses which have cytopathic effects (CPE) on VERO cells, inhibition of these effects by the ethanol fractions was tested. Strong inhibition of CPE induced by western equine encephalitis (WEE) virus was observed in the mycelial fractions but not those of fruiting bodies.

From March 1982, 31 patients with stage IV non-oat cell lung cancer have been treated. Medicinal plants serve as valuable sources for anticancer drug discovery. This study investigated the anticancer potential of the n-butanol fraction from Ardisia villosa extract against breast and gastric cancer cell lines.
