Cemental tear: a risk factor in periodontal attachment loss.

The objective of this retrospective study was to evaluate the influence of cemental tear as a risk factor in periodontal attachment loss. Seventeen extracted, single-rooted teeth showing loss of attachment and having one cemental tear surface and one opposite intact surface were examined. The teeth were stained in 0.1% toluidine blue to visualize attached periodontal ligament remnants and examined in a light microscope under incident light. On each tooth, loss of attachment was measured along the long axis of the root from the cemento-enamel junction to the most coronal level of the periodonta

Long-term results of aseptic cemented Charnley revisions.

One hundred eighty low-friction arthroplasties of the hip in 164 patients in first-time revision surgery were operated between 1973 and 1985. This series used only cement fixation, and aseptic loosening and femoral stem fractures were the only indications for revision. The average follow-up period was 11.5 years. Intra-operative and postoperative complications were frequent: femoral shaft fracture (13 cases), femoral shaft perforation (12 cases), deep infection (14 cases), and dislocation (15 cases). Twenty-eight hips were rerevised or removed (resulting in a total cumulative probability of re

Cemented long-stem revision total knee arthroplasty.

Theoretical concerns about the use of cemented long-stemmed revision total knee arthroplasty include inducing stress shielding with adverse effects on prosthesis fixation. This study details the clinical outcome of 35 patients with 40 cemented long-stemmed kinematic stabilizer revision total knee arthroplasties at followup evaluation averaging 58.2 months (range, 24-111 months). Of these 40 revision arthroplasties, there were 25 long-stemmed tibial components and 38 long-stemmed femoral components. The Knee Society pain score improved from a preoperative value of 38 points (range, 4-80 points)

Effect of processing cement to concrete on hexavalent chromium levels.

Hexavalent chromium sensitization is known to occur from exposure to cement. Concrete is a mixture of cement, sand, rock, and water. Admixtures are compounds used to retard or accelerate concrete setting time. Some countries use ferrous sulfate to reduce hexavalent chromium in cement. We evaluated and compared hexavalent chromium levels in cement, rock (aggregate), and wet and dry concrete in samples from Singapore, Ireland, Denmark, Australia, and the United States. Cement from Denmark contains ferrous sulfate. The effect of representative admixtures on hexavalent chromium concentration in co

Heterotopic bone in hip arthroplasties. Cemented versus noncemented.

Sixty-six hip arthroplasties in 55 patients were reviewed to specifically study cemented versus noncemented procedures, as related to heterotopic bone formation (HBF). Other factors considered included the type of arthroplasty, surgical approaches, preoperative and postoperative medicines, preoperative predisposing diagnoses, range of motion, and pain. The overall percentage of heterotopic ossification was 64%. There was no significant difference between cemented (67%) and noncemented (55%) procedures. Except for an increased percentage (80%) of ossification after a trochanteric osteotomy, the

[Adhesion of sealer cements to dentin with and without smear layer].

The influence of a smear layer on the adhesion of sealer cements to dentin was assessed in recently extracted human anterior teeth. A total of 120 samples was tested, 40 per sealer; 20 each with and without the smear layer. The teeth were split longitudinally, and the internal surfaces were ground flat. One-half of each tooth was left with the smear layer intact, while the other half had the smear removed by washing for 3 min with 17% EDTA followed by 5.25% NaOCI. Evidence of the ability to remove the smear layer was verified by scanning electron microscopy. Using a specially designed jig, the

Pulpal response to an anhydrous glass ionomer luting cement.

This investigation was designed to study the pulpal responses to Aquacem, an anhydrous glass ionomer luting cement, and to compare the results with those previously obtained for a conventional glass ionomer luting cement, Chembond. The study was carried out according to the BSI (1980) recommendations for testing restorative materials in vivo. Aquacem caused more pulpal inflammation than the control material, Kalzinol, though by an indirect mechanism. The statistical model demonstrated a significant association between bacterial presence within the experimental cavity and pulpal inflammation. T

Bacteria and pulpal reactions under silicate cement restorations.

Silicate cement was inserted in deep unlined cavities in 70 human teeth; 35 cavities were cleaned with an antibacterial cleanser, and the other 35 cavities in the contralateral teeth were treated with water spray only. In all teeth, invasion of bacteria from the tooth surface was prevented with a surface seal. Histologic examinations after 4 weeks revealed bacterial growth on dentinal walls in 9 of the uncleaned and in 2 cleaned cavities. Only in these 11 teeth was an inflammatory reaction seen in the pulp. Under eight cavities without bacterial growth and with silicate cement placed directly

Pulp reaction to a temporary zinc oxide/eugenol cement.

The pulpal irritation, such as inflammatory reaction and aspiration of pulpal cells, demonstrated after insertion of the zinc oxide/eugenol cement (Nobetec) seems to warrant the following recommendations: (1) A temporary restoration with a zinc oxide/eugenol base should not be inserted in deep cavities without a protective liner or a calcium hydroxide base covering the exposed dentinal tubules. (2) Before the temporary cementing of inlays and crowns with a zinc oxide/eugenol cement, not only should the dentin be properly cleaned and debris removed, but the prepared surfaces should be covered w

In vitro evaluation of microleakage in a tricalcium silicate-based cement matured for 12 min or 24 h and covered with glass ionomer cement or resin composite.

PURPOSE: To compare microleakage of calcium silicate-based cement (Biodentine, BD) used alone or covered with glass ionomer cement (GIC) or resin composite (RC) and matured for 12 min (12mBD) or 24 h (24hBD). METHODS: Seventy-two extracted premolars with class I cavities were divided into two groups (n = 36) based on BD maturation time (12 min and 24 h). Each group was then subdivided by restoration type into three subgroups (n = 12 each): BD only, BD + GIC, and BD + RC. After pH cycling, thermocycling, and methylene blue immersion, microleakage was assessed with a stereomicroscope. Data were

Effect of low-temperature modulation of bone cement viscosity on the efficacy of cement dispersion and clinical outcomes after percutaneous kyphoplasty: a retrospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: The distribution of bone cement within the vertebral body is an important factor affecting the clinical outcome of percutaneous kyphoplasty (PKP). However, the modulation of the effect of bone cement dispersion has not been explored. METHODS: We analyzed 199 patients with OVCFs who underwent single-segment PKP surgery in our hospital from June 2020 to October 2022. According to the different temperature preconditioning of bone cement, the patients were divided into three groups: the Low Temperature Group (n = 68), the Normal Saline Group (n = 65), and the Room Temperature Group (n

Risk Factors for Cement Leakage in Percutaneous Vertebroplasty for Osteoporotic Vertebral Compression Fractures: An Analysis of 1456 Vertebrae Augmented by Low-Viscosity Bone Cement.

STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective study. OBJECTIVE: To identify risk factors for cement leakage in percutaneous vertebroplasty (PVP) using low-viscosity bone cement for osteoporotic vertebral compression fractures (OVCFs). SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: Cement leakage is the most common complication for PVP and its risk factors have been discussed. However, data in previous series were heterogeneous. Additionally, relative smaller patient sample or more types of cement leakage classified in those studies made the results conflicting. METHODS: A total of 1090 patients who underwent PVP with low-visco

Addressing Antibiotic Hip Spacer Instability via Hybrid Screw-cement Fixation of a Constrained Liner and Cement-rebar Interface Techniques: A Technical Narrative.

Prosthetic joint infection is a challenging and devastating complication after total hip arthroplasty. The benchmark for treatment remains two-stage revision arthroplasty, in which an antibiotic-impregnated spacer is used to eradicate the infection. Although several types of spacer constructs have been described, they have historically been associated with high rates of mechanical complications, namely, dislocation, spacer fracture, and periprosthetic femur fracture. Spacer dislocation is the most common, with reported rates as high as 41%. Here, the authors present a surgical technique to imp
