The rhizomelic form of chondrodysplasia punctata (RCDP) is a peroxisomal disorder characterized biochemically by an impairment of plasmalogen biosynthesis and phytanate catabolism. Human lung tumors from 28 patients were investigated by sucrose density analysis for the presence of cellular retinoic acid-binding proteins. In the tumor-free lung tissue and in most of the 20 squamous cell carcinoma and in 1 small cell carcinoma specimens tested no specific binding of retinoic acid was detectable, whereas these binding proteins were observed in 5 adeno- and 1 large cell carcinoma. We have studied human thyroglobulin of extremely low iodine content obtained from a goitrous cretin who had no measurable peroxidase activity in his thyroid gland. Thyroglobulin from these patients is of interest because of the possibility that poorly iodinated thyroglobulin is particularly susceptible to dissociation and proteolysis. In the present study our data indicated that poorly iodinated thyroglobin isolated under conditions inhibiting proteolysis possessed properties similar to normal human thyroglobulin in its secondary, tertiary, and quaternary structures.

The pathogenesis of type E botulism is discussed as an aspect of the physicochemical and biological properties of 12S toxins (prototoxin and trypsin-activated 12S toxin) and the Ealpha and Ebeta components of each 12S toxin. A molecular weight of 350,000 was determined for each 12S toxin and 150,000 for Ealpha and Ebeta.
