Proof testing to improve the reliability and lifetime of ceramic dental prostheses.

OBJECTIVES: Ceramic dental prostheses exhibit increasing failure rates with service time. In particular, veneered crowns and bridges are susceptible to chipping and other fracture modes of failure. The purpose of this manuscript is to introduce a computational methodology and associated software that can predict the time-dependent probability of failure for ceramic prostheses and subsequently design proof test protocols to significantly enhance their reliabilities and lifetimes. METHODS: Transient reliability and corresponding proof testing theories are introduced. These theories are coded in

Characterization and Simulation of Nanoscale Catastrophic Failure of Metal/Ceramic Interfaces.

The catastrophic failure of metal/ceramic interfaces is a complex process involving the energy transfer between accumulated elastic strain energy and many types of energy dissipation. To quantify the contribution of bulk and interface cohesive energy to the interface cleavage fracture without global plastic deformation, we characterized the quasi-static fracture process of both coherent and semi-coherent fcc-metal/MgO(001) interface systems using a spring series model and molecular static simulations. Our results show that the theoretical catastrophe point and spring-back length by the spring

Effect of Incorporation of Bioactive Glass-Ceramic into Self-etch Adhesives.

PURPOSE: This study evaluated the effect of incorporating different concentrations of biosilicate in an experimental self-etch adhesive (SE). MATERIALS AND METHODS: Biosilicate microparticles (0, 2, 5, and 10 wt%) were incorporated into the primer, and degree of conversion (DC) and wettability were tested (one-way ANOVA, Tukey's test, p < 0.05). The two best concentrations were selected (2% and 5%) for µTBS evaluation. Sound human molars (n=20) were sectioned into quarters and randomly assigned to 4 experimental groups: 1. experimental SE + 0% biosilicate (Exp0%; negative control); 2. experim

Mortality of workers employed in refractory ceramic fiber manufacturing: An update.

This study evaluates the possible association between refractory ceramic fiber (RCF) exposure and all causes of death. Current and former employees (n = 1,119) hired from 1952 to 1999 at manufacturing facilities in New York (NY) state and Indiana were included. Work histories and quarterly plant-wide sampling from 1987 to 2015 provided cumulative fiber exposure (CFE) estimates. The full cohort was evaluated as well as individuals with lower and higher exposure, <45 and ≥45 fiber-months/cc. The Life-Table-Analysis-System was used for all standardized mortality rates (SMRs). Person-years at risk

Catalytic ozonation of aqueous 4-methylquinoline by fluorinated ceramic honeycomb.

Metal-free catalysts for catalytic ozonation have attracted more and more attentions to eliminate the risk of secondary pollution of heavy metals in water or wastewater treatment. Herein we prepared fluorinated ceramic honeycomb (FCH) with the dip-calcination method using NH4F as the modifier over ceramic honeycomb (CH) to catalyze the ozonation of 4-methylquinoline (4-Meq), a typical harmful quinoline derivate discharged from coal or petroleum industries. The ozonation degraded 54.9% of 4-Meq and removed 14.4% of chemical oxygen demand (COD) in 30 min, while the FCH catalytic ozonation degrad

Acetabulum Protrusion Following Ceramic Liner Fracture: A Case Report.

Hip arthroplasty is an extremely satisfying treatment method for coxarthrosis which is in increasing use throughout the world. However, loosening of the prosthesis is a significant complication and to overcome this, ceramic liners are increasingly being selected. If the survival of ceramic surfaces is prolonged, there is a risk of fracture of the ceramic materials. New ceramic materials developed to overcome this problem are more resistant. The case presented here is of a patient in whom liner fracture developed following ceramic-ceramic hip arthroplasty. The ceramic femoral head was observed

Zirconia ceramic post systems: a literature review and a case report.

Cast metal post-core systems have a long history of successful use because of their superior physical properties. However, their high elastic modulus can cause stress concentrations within the surrounding radicular dentin, resulting in root fractures. Moreover, the increasing demand for more esthetically appealing and biocompatible restorations has led to the development of tooth-colored, translucent, metal-free post-core systems. Notably, prefabricated zirconia ceramic post systems have been introduced to satisfy this trend toward a heightened awareness of esthetics, whereby the translucency

A method for the easy fabrication of all-ceramic bridges with the Cerec system.

Both pressing technology and CAD/CAM methods have proven themselves clinically for the fabrication of all-ceramic restorations. The advantages of the Cerec technology for the economic fabrication of all-ceramic bridges can be exploited by the use of burn-out blanks of polymer material. The milling process of very hard ceramics in the milling unit, which has some disadvantages, is replaced by the pressing process and makes the IPS e.max press material accessible to CAD/CAM users, primarily for extending the range of indications to splinted crowns and small all-ceramic bridges.

Testing of silicon nitride ceramic bearings for total hip arthroplasty.

Modern ceramic bearings used in total hip arthroplasty (THA) consist of a femoral head (ball) articulating inside a hemispherical acetabular … Pa, a Weibull modulus of 19, and a fracture toughness of 10 +/- 1 MPa m(1/2). Unlike zirconia-based ceramics that have also been used in THA, accelerated aging of Si(3)N(4) did not adversely affect the flexural strength. In simulated wear tests, Si(3)N(4) acetabular cups produced low-volumetric wear whether articulating against Si(3)N(4) or cobalt-chromium …

Catastrophic failure of ceramic-polyethylene bearing total hip arthroplasty.

Complications of ceramic-polyethylene bearing total hip arthroplasty (THA) include osteolysis, loosening, dislocation, and component failure. Catastrophic acetabular component failure involves severe damage to both the polyethylene liner and metal shell. This case study presents the first reported complete wear-through of the acetabular portion of a ceramic-polyethylene arthroplasty presenting as a dislocation and a review of the literature. In this study, a patient's alumina ceramic femoral head penetrated the polyethylene liner and titanium shell and presented as a dislocated THA. The contri
