Relationship Between Motion Sickness Susceptibility and Vestibular Test Results.

OBJECTIVE: There is no test parameter with high sensitivity and specificity for the diagnosis of motion sickness. The aim of this study was to demonstrate a correlation between vestibular function tests and motion sickness. In addition, our secondary aim is to evaluate the sensitivity of the skull vibration-induced nystagmus test (SVINT) in the diagnosis of motion sickness. METHODS: A total of 44 young adults aged 19-25 who had no hearing loss, complaints of dizziness/vertigo, or any diagnosed neurological disease were included. According to the motion sickness susceptibility questionnaire-sh

Concurrence of multiple aneurysms, extreme coiling of the extracranial internal carotid artery and ipsilateral persistent primitive hypoglossal artery: A case report and literature review.

BACKGROUND: The primitive hypoglossal artery (PHA) is an anastomotic vessel of the carotid-basilar artery system that is prevalent only transiently during the embryonic period. Persistent primitive hypoglossal artery (PPHA) is a rare vessel variation in which PHA exists persistently in adulthood and occurs in approximately 0.02-0.1% of the population. Tortuosity of the extracranial internal carotid artery (ICA) is relatively common, impacting 10-43% of the population, and is caused by either congenital or acquired factors. It is still unknown whether PPHA and tortuosity of extracranial ICA are

Torticollis, Facial Asymmetry, Local Pain, and Barré-Liéou Syndrome in Connection with One-Sided Ponticulus Posticus: A Case Report and Review of the Literature.

BACKGROUND: Ponticulus posticus (PP) occurs frequently and may cause symptom series, including vertebrobasilar insufficiency, migraine, hearing loss, and Barré-Liéou syndrome. However, few studies to date have described surgical treatment of PP. We report a rare case of a patient who suffered from torticollis, facial asymmetry, localized pain, and Barré-Liéou syndrome in connection with PP. We also review the pertinent literature, focusing on surgical treatment for symptoms due to PP. CASE PRESENTATION: A 23-year-old male presented with the chief complaint of continuous significant dizziness

Video-nystagmographic evidence in more than 700 consecutive cases of road traffic whiplash injury.

PURPOSE: Whiplash injury is a frequent traumatic lesion occurring mainly in road accidents, which may also cause dizziness severe enough to impact everyday life. Vestibular examination is routinely performed on these patients, although the role of the neuro-otologist is still not clearly defined. The main endpoint of this study was to describe the videonystagmography (VNG) evidence in a large cohort of patients who underwent road traffic whiplash injury. METHODS: 717 consecutive patients who reported whiplash-associated disorders due to a road traffic accident underwent clinical examination a

Cervical Vestibular Evoked Myogenic Potentials in Idiopathic Intracranial Hypertension.

PURPOSE: Idiopathic intracranial hypertension (IIH) is raised intracranial pressure without any identifiable etiology. The inner ear structures are susceptible to cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) pressure changes because of connections between the CSF space and the labyrinth to explain the audiovestibular symptoms, such as pulsatile tinnitus or dizziness, reported in 50% to 60% of these patients. The aim of this study was to investigate the vestibular functions using cervical vestibular evoked myogenic potentials (cVEMPs) in IIH. METHODS: cVEMPs were recorded in 30 patients with IIH before lumbar pu

Chronic Electrical Stimulation of the Otolith Organ: Preliminary Results in Humans with Bilateral Vestibulopathy and Sensorineural Hearing Loss.

INTRODUCTION: Bilateral vestibulopathy is an important cause of imbalance that is misdiagnosed. The clinical management of patients with bilateral vestibular loss remains difficult as there is no clear evidence for an effective treatment. In this paper, we try to analyze the effect of chronic electrical stimulation and adaptation to electrical stimulation of the vestibular system in humans when stimulating the otolith organ with a constant pulse train to mitigate imbalance due to bilateral vestibular dysfunction (BVD). METHODS: We included 2 patients in our study with BVD according to Criteri

Case report of intracranial Rosai-Dorfman disease.

Rosai-Dorfman disease (RDD)-sinus histiocytosis with massive lymphadenopathy-represents a peculiar proliferation of histiocyte-like cells in patients. The condition was described by Rosai and Dorfman in 1969, after examining 4 cases, as an idiopathic histiocytic disorder. In 1972, they studied an additional 30 cases of patients with RDD. A histioproliferative disorder, RDD is characterized by bilateral, painless, cervical lymphadenopathy in 81% of patients. Fever, leukocytosis, elevated sedimentation rate, and polyclonal hypergammaglobulinemia may also be found. In 30% of patients, extranodal

Inner ear disorders.

OBJECTIVES: To present a framework for the diagnosis and treatment of inner ear disorders, with an emphasis on problems common to neuro-rehabilitation. INTRODUCTION: Disorders of the inner ear can cause hearing loss, tinnitus, vertigo and imbalance. Hearing loss can be conductive, sensorineural, or mixed; conductive hearing loss arises from the ear canal or middle ear, while sensorineural hearing loss arises from the inner ear or auditory nerve. Vertigo is a hallucination of motion, and is the cardinal symptom of vestibular system disease. It should be differentiated from other causes of dizz

Recurrent postcoital syncope due to a vagal response triggered by deep penetration: a case report.

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Postcoital syncope (PCS) is a rare, transient loss of consciousness during or after sexual intercourse, often linked to an exaggerated vagal response. The condition is poorly understood, underdiagnosed, and can significantly impact patients' quality of life and intimate relationships. Differentiating PCS from other potential causes of syncope is essential for accurate diagnosis and management. CASE PRESENTATION: A 34-year-old woman with no notable medical history presented with recurrent episodes of syncope during sexual intercourse, primarily triggered by deep pe

Structural and Psychometric Properties of Neck Pain Questionnaires Through Patient-Reported Outcome Measures: A Systematic Review.

Background and Objectives: Questionnaires are patient-reported outcome measures that require a validation process to assess their reliability and replicability. Over time, questionnaires have not only focused on a single health condition, such as neck pain, but also expanded their assessment spectrum to other areas in order to gather additional and relevant information from the patient. The main objective of this study was to conduct a systematic review of the different structural and psychometric characteristics of neck pain questionnaires. Materials and Methods: A systematic review was condu

Evidence of Peripheral Vestibular Impairment Among Adults With Chronic Moderate-Severe Traumatic Brain Injury.

PURPOSE: Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a leading cause of death and disability among adults in the United States. There is evidence to suggest the peripheral vestibular system is vulnerable to damage in individuals with TBI. However, there are limited prospective studies that describe the type and frequency of vestibular impairment in individuals with chronic moderate-severe TBI (> 6 months postinjury). METHOD: Cervical and ocular vestibular evoked myogenic potentials (VEMPs) and video head impulse test (vHIT) were used to assess the function of otolith organ and horizontal semicircular can

Bilateral Hunter's bow syndrome: a rare case diagnosed by dynamic digital subtraction angiography.

A 27-year-old female patient suffered from recurrent episodes of dizziness, visual rotation, and intermittent right-hand numbness over one month. Symptoms persisted and were triggered by rotating the head to the right or left for more than 10 seconds. Neurological examination showed that the symptoms were most pronounced when the head was rotated over 45 degrees to the right. Dynamic digital subtraction angiography (dDSA) was performed to confirm the diagnosis. Leftward head rotation caused occlusion of the right vertebral artery(VA) . However, the symptoms were mild, owing to sufficient compe

Vertebral Artery Dissection in a Woman Due to Golf: An Under Recognized Etiology.

INTRODUCTION: Traditionally, spontaneous cervical artery dissections have been associated with violent, sudden neck movements. These events are a significant cause of stroke related morbidity, particularly in young people. Only a handful of cases of golf-induced vertebral artery dissection (VAD) have been described, and the discussion has primarily focused on middle-aged men. Despite the discussion focused on this demographic, women are participating in golf at higher rates than ever before, and have a higher risk for developing VAD. CASE REPORT: A 41-year-old woman presented to our hospital
