The usage of antibiotics for prevention of infection in surgical practice is taken into consideration with the most frequent pathogenic agents, which are isolated from the genital tract and their sensitivity to antibiotics, pharmacokinetic properties of the antibiotic-tissue penetration, duration of action, concentration (without any risk) and established clinical efficiency. The potential benefit from prophylactic antibiotic should always be balanced against the possible damage. A survivor of a clinically severe presentation of amniotic fluid embolism during cesarean section performed under epidural anesthesia is presented. Some general pathophysiologic features of amniotic fluid embolism are discussed in the context of presented case: seizures as a first sign of amniotic fluid embolism, heart failure and coagulopathy. In addition we discuss the management of the epidural catheter in coagulopathy in the presented case.

Twenty-two cases of Cesarean section due to fetal anomaly diagnosed prenatally were reviewed in terms of the anesthetic managements. From 1980 to 1989, 8 cesarean sections were performed on an elective basis in 5 mares. Four mares had partially obstructed pelvic canals; 2 of these mares had previously lost foals because of dystocia. A prospective randomized study was undertaken to evaluate the efficacy of a single dose of cefuroxime in alleviating infectious complications following non-elective cesarean section. One hundred and two women were allocated to receive 750 mg of cefuroxime after cord clamping and 99 were allocated to a control group not receiving any antibiotic prophylaxis. A prospective study was conducted to determine the risk of placenta previa and unexplained antepartum hemorrhage after a previous cesarean section (CS). Of a total of 24,644 patients, 81 (0.33%) had a placenta previa which demanded abdominal delivery. Records were reviewed retrospectively on 72 infants with open spina bifida followed from birth through one year of age. Thirty-two infants were born by cesarean section and 40 vaginally. A very rare complication after cesarean section is reported. A spontaneous perforation of the small intestine caused an acute abdomen. Ileus, peritonitis and septic shock are the most important signs of this life threatening complication. In this matter a very good cooperation between the different disciplines is of importance. The authors report a case of post-caesarian acute idiopathic dilatation of the colon (Ogilvie's syndrome), which is a rare syndrome, particularly after caesarian section, which poses difficult diagnostic problems. Fifty consecutive patients undergoing cesarean section were evaluated prospectively. A data collection form was developed and 113 variables relating to demographic features, antepartum care, intrapartum events and postpartum course were evaluated. Vecuronium (Org NC 45) was used in 27 parturients undergoing elective cesarean section under general anesthesia. One of the parturients had a twin pregnancy. Neuromuscular transmission was assessed clinically by stimulating the ulnar nerve and observing the contraction of the fingers.
