In this study, the effect of temperature, water quality, and the impact of an intense typhoon event on change in 137Cs concentration in the water of agricultural and forested rivers near the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant (Japan) was evaluated using monthly stationary observations obtained under baseflow conditions 2.8-10.6 years after the nuclear accident in 2011. Chemical composition, energy value and 137Cs and 90Sr content in daily diets were assessed in rural population from the region controlled after the Chernobyl accident. As shown by low urine excretion of vitamins (thiamine, ascorbic acid, riboflavin, N1-methylnicotinamide), the population suffer from vitamin deficiency, especially in winter and spring. Levels of the radionuclides rose 1.3-19.7 and 3.4-24.8-fold for 137Cs and 90Sr, respectively.

A commercially available system of caesium iodide crystal mini-detectors (Oakfield Instruments, Oxon, UK) was modified so that it was suitable for dual isotopic measurement of the plasma protein accumulation index (PPA)- a measure of pulmonary endothelial permeability. Using this modified system the mean PPA x 10(-3) min-1 +/- (S.E.M.) recorded in 11 normal subjects (22 lungs) was 0.18 (0.08) and in 6 patients (9 lungs) with the adult respiratory distress syndrome was 2.88 (0.63) (P less than 0.02). The radiation response of a cultured line of differentiated rat thyroid epithelial cells (FRTL-5) was determined by clonogenic assay in vitro and compared to the previously reported response curve for primary rat thyroid cells assayed by transplantation in vivo. It is very important to determine the precise internal thyroid doses of Fukushima residents involved in the 2011 Fukushima nuclear disaster, particularly for small children.
