Strain and Opportunity: A Theory of Repeat Victimization.

General strain theory is often applied to explain the origin of deviant behavior, while the risky lifestyles and opportunities perspective is often used to examine the ongoing risk for victimization. However, given evidence that the delinquent coping mechanisms operationalized by the general strain tests and the risky behaviors measured in the risky lifestyles models are often the same behaviors, the current study argues that these two models can be constructed as a uniform framework to explain the onset and continuity of victimization, including involvement in delinquency, from childhood thro

Medical and psychosocial outcome of children with congenital central hypoventilation syndrome.

We report the long-term medical and psychosocial outcome of 13 children with congenital central hypoventilation syndrome. One child (8%) died before initial hospital discharge. Of the remaining 12 children, 11 (92%) have been successfully cared for in their natural or foster parents' homes. Home ventilatory support was provided with positive-pressure ventilation, negative-pressure ventilation, or diaphragm pacers. After an initial lengthy hospitalization, children spent little time in the hospital. Severe medical complications were uncommon but included cor pulmonale (one child), poor growth (

From fixing to connecting: parents' experiences supporting adult children with eating disorders.

BACKGROUND: Unlike evidence-based guidelines that exist for families of youth with eating disorders, little is known about the optimal role for families of adult patients. Given issues of patient autonomy and confidentiality, it is common for family members to report high levels of distress, confusion about how to offer support, and feelings of exclusion. Nevertheless, interactions with parents play a critical role in the recovery process. The purpose of this research was to increase understanding of support experiences of parents of adult children while identifying what they believe to be the

Bridging the Communication Gap: Pragmatics and Interactional Dynamics in Deaf and Hard of Hearing Children.

PURPOSE: Children who are deaf and hard of hearing (DHH) often face challenges in everyday social communication, even when they achieve good auditory recovery through hearing technologies. These difficulties, particularly in pragmatic and interactional domains, can affect peer relationships, educational outcomes, and quality of life. This study aims to characterize interactional and discourse-level challenges in DHH children with functional auditory access to inform targeted interventions. METHOD: We analyzed dyadic child-adult interactions involving nine DHH and 13 typically hearing (TH) chi

A fragile bond: adoptive parents' experiences of caring for children with a diagnosis of reactive attachment disorder.

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES: To understand how adoptive parents caring for children with a diagnosis of reactive attachment disorder (RAD) make sense of their life-worlds by establishing the meanings that underlie and structure their experiences of their everyday lives. BACKGROUND: Reactive attachment disorder is a serious psychosocial disorder of childhood that causes short- and long-term relationship, health and social consequences for children. It is more likely to be observed in children being cared for by foster carers, kinship carers or adoptive parents. Exploration of adoption from parents' pe

Associations between experiences of childhood maltreatment and perceived acceptability of child maltreatment: A cross-cultural and exploratory study.

BACKGROUND: Acceptable parental behaviors and practices toward a child vary across countries and may impact the risk of exposure to maltreatment. Conversely, prior experiences of maltreatment as a child may influence the acceptability of child maltreatment (CM) behaviors. OBJECTIVE: This exploratory study examined the association between CM experiences and perceived acceptability of CM using data from four countries representing different cultures, living standards, and gross national income. PARTICIPANTS AND SETTING: We recruited a convenience sample of 478 adults from Cameroon (n = 111), C

Child Sexual Abuse in Organizational Settings: A Research Framework to Advance Policy and Practice.

Recent decades have produced growing public attention to the problem of child sexual abuse (CSA) occurring within civic institutions, school settings, youth sports, religious institutions, and other youth-serving organizations. Often amid considerable media and public scrutiny, such institutions have been called upon to improve their responses to sexual abuse incidents, address underlying organizational conditions that may foster such incidents, and develop viable systems of early intervention and prevention. These system challenges, in turn, have produced growing demand for high-quality resea

Supporting positive parenting practices within a community-based music therapy group program: Pilot study findings.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the benefits of a short-term, community-based music therapy group program on positive parenting practices. Parent-child dyads receiving early intervention family services (N = 199) participated in 8 weekly, 45-60 minute, music-based group play sessions. We analyzed pre-post parent self-reports that measured parenting competency and clinician-observed ratings of parental responsiveness that evaluated behavioral domains of play, praise, and consistency. Significant results were found for parent-reported efficacy (p = 0.008, d = 0.21) and satisfaction (p = 0.

"This course has made it easier for me to embrace myself and my child": A qualitative study of an adapted mindfulness-based stress reduction course for pregnant women with psychosocial vulnerabilities.

Mental disorders are commonly encountered in pregnancy complications, and women with a preconception history of mental disorders or other psychosocial vulnerabilities are at increased risk. Mental disorders, such as depression, can persist postnatal and adversely affect mother-infant bonding and infant development. Consequently, it is important to address prenatal mental health. The aim of this qualitative study was to explore the impact of an adapted Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) course for pregnant women with psychosocial vulnerabilities as a method to support transition into mot

Parental speech and gesture scaffolding moderate the neural dynamics of parent-child synchrony.

Parent-child interactions foster children's neurocognitive development through multiple pathways. A key pathway involves parental scaffolding, in which parents use speech, gesture, or their combination multimodally to guide children's problem solving and learning. However, the neural processes underlying different scaffolding modalities remain largely unknown. In the present study, we examined the neural basis for the role of parental scaffolding during a parent-child cooperative spatial problem-solving task. We characterized three different types of scaffolds parents used, specifically speech

The Dyadic Influence of Relationship Hope on Family Functioning.

There is a continued need to understand family factors that can promote child well-being and reduce their risks for mental health problems. Drawing from research on family dynamics and using a cross-sectional design, this study examined the association between relationship hope, couple satisfaction, and family functioning using the actor-partner interdependence model (APIM) on dyadic data collected from 537 opposi-gender, ethnically diverse, low-income couples. Results indicated that, while accounting for couple satisfaction as a covariate, women's relationship hope was positively associated w

History of WOFAPS (1963-2019).

The formation of the World Federation of Associations of Pediatric Surgery (WOFAPS) was an important unifying force in the emergence of pediatric surgery as a distinct specialty. Beginning with the formation of several national societies in the early '60s, an early, multinational effort was created. This was in large part fostered by the International Pediatric Association (IPA), which lent logistical support from the medical pediatric community to the pediatric surgeons. In 2001, the mission of the Federation was formalized to focus on the development and education of surgeons serving childre

The neural development of empathy is sensitive to caregiving and early trauma.

Empathy is a core human social ability shaped by biological dispositions and caregiving experiences; yet the mechanisms sustaining maturation of the neural basis of empathy are unknown. Here, we followed eighty-four children, including 42 exposed to chronic war-related adversity, across the first decade of life, and assessed parenting, child temperament, and anxiety disorders as contributors to the neural development of empathy. At preadolescence, participants underwent magenetoencephalography while observing others' distress. Preadolescents show a widely-distributed response in structures imp
