Improving tolerance against drought in canola by penconazole and calcium.

Drought stress is one of the most important environmental factors that limit plant growth. Canola is an important agricultural crop grown pr … etterment of growth by PEN can be explained by induction in DPPH (1, 1-diphenyl-2- picrylhydrazyl), chlorophyll and P content and reduction in Electrolyte leakage in cultivar RGS003. Growth recovery by PEN is concomitant by increase in DPPH, succinate dehydrogenase, chlorophyll, carotenoid and K+ content in cultivar Sarigol. Ca2+ treatment by induction in Relat …

SCL15 Promotes Seed Longevity Acquisition in Arabidopsis thaliana by Enhancing Antioxidant and Repair Mechanisms During Maturation.

To ensure seed longevity and successful germination, orthodox seeds acquire protective and repair mechanisms during the late stage of seed development to counteract the detrimental effects of desiccation and subsequent rehydration, processes often associated with oxidative stress. SCARECROW-LIKE 15 (SCL15) was identified as a key regulator of seed longevity acquisition through transcriptomic profiling of maturing seeds from Arabidopsis thaliana wild type (Col-0), an SCL15 mutant, and transgenic lines overexpressing SCL15 under the seed-specific Napin promoter. SCL15 influences pathways associa

Do aluminum (Al)-hyperaccumulator and phosphorus (P)-solubilising species assist neighbouring plants sensitive to Al toxicity and P deficiency?

We aimed to evaluate the facilitation effects of an aluminum (Al) hyperaccumulator species bearing cluster roots, Gevuina avellana, on the seedling growth and performance of an Al-intolerant and phosphorus (P)-deficient-sensitive plant, Vaccinium corymbosum. For this, seedlings of G. avellana and V. corymbosum were grown alone or together as follows: i) two G. avellana seedlings, ii) one G. avellana + one V. corymbosum and iii) two V. corymbosum, in soil supplemented with Al (as Al2(SO4)3) and in the control (without Al supplementation). We determined relative growth rate (RGR), photosynthetic

The CaALAD Gene From Pepper (Capsicum annuum L.) Confers Chilling Stress Tolerance in Transgenic Arabidopsis Plants.

The ALAD gene encodes an enzyme that is essential for chlorophyll biosynthesis and is involved in many other physiological processes in plants. In this study, the CaALAD gene was cloned from pepper and sequenced. Multiple sequence alignment and phylogenetic analysis of ALAD proteins from nine plant species showed that ALAD is highly conserved, and that CaALAD shows the highest homology with the ALAD protein from eggplant. Subcellular localization indicated that the CaALAD protein is mainly localized to the chloroplasts. After transferring CaALAD into the Arabidopsis thaliana genome, cold toler

A cellular timetable of autumn senescence.

We have studied autumn leaf senescence in a free-growing aspen (Populus tremula) by following changes in pigment, metabolite and nutrient content, photosynthesis, and cell and organelle integrity. The senescence process started on September 11, 2003, apparently initiated solely by the photoperiod, and progressed steadily without any obvious influence of other environmental signals. For example, after this date, senescing leaves accumulated anthocyanins in response to conditions inducing photooxidative stress, but at the beginning of September the leaves did not. Degradation of leaf constituent

Multiphoton confocal microscopy using a femtosecond Cr:forsterite laser.

With its output wavelength covering the infrared penetrating window of most biological tissues at 1,200-1,250 nm, the femtosecond Cr:forsterite laser shows high potential to serve as an excellent excitation source for the multiphoton fluorescence microscope. Its high output power, short optical pulse width, high stability, and low dispersion in fibers make it a perfect replacement for the currently widely used Ti:sapphire laser. In this paper, we study the capability of using a femtosecond Cr:forsterite laser in multiphoton scanning microscopy. We have performed the multiphoton excited photolu

A protocol for conducting 7-day daily renewal tests with Lemna gibba.

Lemna gibba (a duckweed) is a freshwater macrophyte commonly used in toxicity testing, and Lemna spp are currently the only aquatic higher plants required for evaluation of pesticides under the pesticide registration guidelines of the EPA. The methods currently available for toxicity testing by various organizations and agencies, including ASTM, OECD, EPA and Environment Canada, are largely static or semistatic tests with unspecified renewal intervals (OECD) and may not provide a consistent means of exposure owing to short toxicant half-life in aquatic media, uptake of chemical by plants and e

Spirulina- An Edible Cyanobacterium with Potential Therapeutic Health Benefits and Toxicological Consequences.

Spirulina is a blue-green algae which is cultivated not only for its maximum protein content but also due to the presence of other essential nutrients such as carbohydrates and vitamins (A, C and E). It is also a storehouse of minerals including iron, calcium, chromium, copper, magnesium, manganese, phosphorus, potassium, sodium and zinc. Simultaneously, γ- linolenic acid (an essential fatty acid), as well as pigments such as chlorophyll A and phycobiliproteins (C-phycocyanin, allophycocyanin and β-carotene), is also a major component of its rich nutritional profile. Spirulina is known to have…

Deep forecasting architectures mirror ecological time scales in water quality prediction.

Accurate water quality forecasting-specifically tracking phytoplankton dynamics like chlorophyll a-is crucial for safeguarding aquatic ecosystems and global water security. Deep temporal architectures offer powerful non-linear modeling capabilities, promising to overcome the parameterization bottlenecks of traditional process-based models. However, current applications treat these models as black boxes, leaving it obscure how specific architectural modules interact with the intrinsic ecological time scales governing aquatic environments. Here, we reveal a fundamental architectural-ecological d…

Exploring nonlinear responses of hydrodynamics and algal biomass to restoration measures in a eutrophic shallow urban lake.

Shallow urban lakes are prone to hydrodynamic stagnation due to limited water exchange, rendering them highly susceptible to eutrophication and algal blooms However, for small urban lakes with weak hydrodynamics, key knowledge gaps remain: whether water diversion can disrupt stagnant zones, what critical flow rate is required to suppress algae, and which regions are most suitable for submerged macrophyte restoration. Focusing on Lianshi Lake-a small shallow urban lake in North China-this study developed a coupled hydrodynamic-water quality-ecology model based on the Environmental Fluid Dynamic

Humic acid alleviates the ecotoxicity of graphene-family materials on the freshwater microalgae Scenedesmus obliquus.

The extensive application of graphene-family materials (GFMs) has increased its potential risk to aquatic organisms. However, the influence of humic acid (HA) on the biotoxicity of GFMs has not clarified. Here, we conduct a study on the toxicity of four GFMs, i.e. graphene (G), graphene oxide (GO), carboxyl-modified graphene (G-COOH) and amine-modified graphene (G-NH2), with or without HA, using Scenedesmus obliquus (S. obliquus) as model organism. Our results showed that the four GFMs induced significant inhibition on cell growth and Chlorophyll-a (Chl-a) synthesis, loss of cell viability and

Physicochemical factors affecting the spatial variance of monomethylmercury in artificial reservoirs.

The aim of this study was to identify how hydrologic factors (e.g., rainfall, maximum depth, reservoir and catchment area, and water residence time) and water chemistry factors (e.g., conductivity, pH, suspended particulate matter, chlorophyll-a, dissolved organic carbon, and sulfate) interact to affect the spatial variance in monomethylmercury (MMHg) concentration in nine artificial reservoirs. We hypothesized that the MMHg concentration of reservoir water would be higher in eutrophic than in oligotrophic reservoirs because increased dissolved organic matter and sulfate in eutrophic reservoir

Modeling the distribution of Geodia sponges and sponge grounds in the Northwest Atlantic.

Deep-sea sponge grounds provide structurally complex habitat for fish and invertebrates and enhance local biodiversity. They are also vulnerable to bottom-contact fisheries and prime candidates for Vulnerable Marine Ecosystem designation and related conservation action. This study uses species distribution modeling, based on presence and absence observations of Geodia spp. and sponge grounds derived from research trawl catches, as well as spatially continuous data on the physical and biological ocean environment derived from satellite data and oceanographic models, to model the distribution of
