A case of primary diffuse synovial chondromatosis of the ankle with long-term follow-up is reported. Trauma is implicated as a precipitating factor. This unusual, distinctive synovial neoplasm presents readily recognizable pathological features (Fig. 2). Specific diagnostic criteria are presented. The differential diagnosis of primary synovial chondromatosis includes secondary reactive synovial chondromatosis and synovial chondrosarcoma. The usual sources of osteochondritic loose bodies, on the other hand, are traumatic joint disruption, osteoarthritis, and infectious disorders. Acute primary …

BACKGROUND: Thyroid cartilage hemangiomas are exceedingly rare. We present a rare case of an expansile tumor within the right thyroid ala th … ness on flexible laryngoscopy. Initial primary differential consideration was chondrosarcoma versus chondroma. He underwent open resection with reconstruction of the right thyroid ala using a rib graft and titanium plate which was used to secure the graft to the contralateral thyroid ala and the ipsilateral inner thyroid perichondrium. Intraoperative frozen …

BACKGROUND: Maffucci syndrome is a rare disorder characterized by multiple enchondromas associated with soft tissue haemangioma. We report a case of Maffucci syndrome associated with epidermal verrucous nevus.
CASE REPORT: A 33-year-old woman, with no previous history of note, had presented multiple episodes of vascular tumefaction of the toes and verrucous lesions of the right lower limb since childhood. Clinical examination revealed multiple pain-free and round haemangiomas on the toes; some were hard and evocative of chondromas while others were soft and suggested angiomas. In addition, th…

We report on 554 bone tumors and tumor-like lesions of the foot, which have been diagnosed within the period from 1945-1985 in the Departmen … By contrast 13% of all benign bone tumors are localized in the foot. However, 90% of them are osteochondromas and chondromas. Other benign lesions are rare, especially tumors arising from connective tissue of bone. In several cases correct diagnosis was only possible by histologic examination whereas modern digital imaging did not substantially add to conv …

Histopathology revealed that the mass in the first dog was consistent with a benign chondroma, while in the second dog the morphologic characteristics, mitotic activity, and infiltrative growth justified a diagnosis of chondrosarcoma. According to a pathological definition, a bony sequestrum is defined as a piece of devitalized bone that has been separated from the surroun … ne sequestrum. These include osteoid tumors (osteoid osteoma, osteoblastoma), cartilaginous tumors (chondroma and chondroblastoma), lipomatous tumors (lipoma), and benign fibrous tumors (fibromyxoma, myxoma, and desmoplastic fibroma). Therefore, various conditions may present at imaging as a small area of osteolysis containing central calcifications. Howeve …

OBJECTIVE: To study the surgical management of tumors in the conjunctive area among the neck, thorax and axilla and its efficacy.
METHODS: From Oct. 1999 to March 2006, eleven cases with benign tumors in the area between the neck, thorax and axilla were collected and analysed. Among them, five neurilemmoma, three neurofibroma, two chondroma and one meningioma, respectively. CT scans showed that the neck, thorax and axilla were affected simultaneously more or less. In this group, direct invasion to the vertebra was found in 4 cases, and spinal compression in one patient. After the disarticulat…

Tenosynovial chondromatosis has not been well recognized because of its rarity, but it is clinically important because of its high rate of recurrence. We report here a case of tenosynovial chondromatosis with deposits of crystalline material that appeared to be sodium urate (gouty tophi). A 37-year-old Japanese man was admitted because of a hard mass in his left third finger. He had undergone surgery at the same anatomical site four and seven years previously. The roentgenogram revealed a soft tissue mass in the flexor aspect of the proximal phalanx. At operation, the tumor was found to have a…

BACKGROUND: Enchondromas are the most common benign bone tumours found in the hand. They are usually accidentally diagnosed on an X-ray, because they grow asymptomatically. In some cases, a pathological fracture of the involved phalanx may be the first sign. The objective of this study was to assess the results of operative treatment of enchondromas involving hand phalanges and metacarpals.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: The study group consisted of 24 patients, 16 women (67%) and 8 men, (33%), aged a mean of 31 years, who were operated on at our centre. The surgery consisted in curettage, and - in mo…

A 35-year-old woman presented with a pathological fracture of a solitary cystic enchondroma in the proximal phalanx of her right index finger (extending to the articular surface with expansion of the cortex). The affected segment was excised and reconstructed with an autograft from the proximal phalanx of her right third toe. At the 2-year follow-up, the graft was well taken, the articular cartilage was intact, and the range of motion was good. There was no evidence of osteoarthrosis.

The endobronchial hamartochondroma is a very rare, slowly growing benign tumor. We report a case of hamartochondroma conglomerate located in the left main bronchus. The resection via rigid endoscopy with ND-YAG laser and forceps was successful, and no complications occured. The rigid endoscopy with laser-application in such case is a safe and effective procedure in endobronchial hamartochondroma.

Chondromyxoid fibroma is an unusual, benign tumor of cartilaginous origin and represents less than 1% of all primary bone tumors. It usually … as of hyaline cartilage. The differential diagnosis includes giant cell tumor, chondroblastoma or enchondroma as well as chondrosarcoma. The rarity of these lesions may render the diagnosis difficult to make, especially when the lesion involves an unusual site such as the acromium.

Enchondroma are benign cartilaginous tumors and are localized most often at the site of the phalanges. Between 1982 and 1993 73 patients with monostotic enchondroma and 5 patients with polyostotic enchondroma were operated at our clinic. Clinical signs of monostotic tumors were pathological fracture (38.4%), pain or swelling. Eleven percent of cases were accidental findings. Surgical treatment was performed by complete removal of the tumors and filling the bone cavity with autologous spongiosa taken from the pelvic bones, the elbow, or the radius. Three patients (4.1%) had to be operated a sec…

Nine patients with multiple hereditary osteochondromata underwent ankle surgery for valgus deformity. The indications for operation included pain from trauma of the prominent masses, pain in the ankle joint associated with the deformity, limited ankle motion, and undesirable cosmesis. The procedures included excision of osteochondromata, fibular lengthening, and medial tibial hemiepiphyseal retardation by inserting staples. Excision of osteochondromata as an isolated procedure relieved pain and improved cosmesis but did not alter the tibiofibular length discrepancy or the ankle valgus. Lengthe…

Synovial osteochondromatosis is a benign lesion characterized by multiple cartilaginous and osteocartilaginous nodules of the synovium, as well as loose bodies within the joint. Present theories of origin include spontaneous metaplastic changes of the synovial cells or bursal tissues, which form foci of cartilage. The cartilage detaches, enters the joint cavity, and ultimately becomes calcified and ossified. Several authors have suggested trauma to the synovial tissues as being causative, but this has never been statistically confirmed. Others have even mentioned the spontaneous metablastic ch…
