Ventricular involvement in experimental Hemophilus influenzae meningitis.

We determined the frequency of ventricular involvement during Hemophilus influenzae type b meningitis in ten bacteremic infant rhesus monkeys. Meningitis was defined as cerebrospinal fluid obtained from the lumbar subarachnoid space or cisterna magna containing bacteria and ten or more leukocytes per mm3. HIB were cultured from 22 of 22 ventricular CSF samples. In 17 of 18 comparisons of bacterial density in ventricular and cisternal CSF, the values were within one log10: similarly, 5 of 8 quantitative ventricular-lumbar comparisons were within one log10. This concordance was present at bacter…

Multimodal imaging maps spinal glymphatic transport in health and its disruption after injury.

Spinal cord injury (SCI) is an incurable neurological condition in which post-traumatic edema contributes to secondary ischemic damage because the spinal cord is confined within the rigid vertebral canal. However, glymphatic transport in the healthy and injured spinal cord remains poorly characterized. We hypothesized that spinal cerebrospinal (CSF) and glymphatic transport is shaped by anatomy, administration route, and molecular size of the tracer; is disrupted after SCI; and is further impaired by loss of aquaporin-4 (AQP4). CSF tracers were administered by cisterna magna or lumbar intrathe…

MRI-derived three-dimensional modelling reveals cervicothoracic subarachnoid space narrowing in syringomyelia-affected cavalier king charles spaniels.

BACKGROUND: Syringomyelia (SM) is a disorder of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) circulation strongly associated with Chiari-like malformation (CM) in Cavalier King Charles Spaniels (CKCS). Although CM is nearly ubiquitous in the breed, not all affected dogs develop signs of CM-related pain (CM-P) or Syringomyelia (SM), raising questions about underlying mechanisms. CM-P without SM has been linked to brachycephaly, whereas SM involves additional craniocervical conformational changes. This study tested whether CM-P affected CKCS with and without SM were more likely to have reduced cisterna magna volum…

Effect of cervical sympathetic block on cerebral vasospasm after subarachnoid hemorrhage in rabbits.

PURPOSE: Cerebral vasospasm (CVS) is a major complication after subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) induced by the rupture of intracranial aneurys … th cervical sympathetic block group (Group C). Models of delayed CVS were established by puncturing cisterna magna twice with an injection of autologous arterial blood in Groups B and C. A sham injection of blood through cisterna magna was made in Group A. 0.5 ml saline was injected each time through a catheter for cervical sympathetic block after the first inje …

Expression of c-fos-like immunoreactivity in brainstem after meningeal irritation by blood in the subarachnoid space.

The expression of c-fos protein was examined by immunohistochemistry in serial sections of brainstem following the instillation of either autologous arterial blood (0.3 ml) or mock cerebrospinal fluid (0.3 ml) through a catheter placed in the cisterna magna, or following catheter placement alone in pentobarbital-anesthetized Sprague-Dawley rats. After injection, blood was distributed within the subarachnoid space surrounding the brainstem and in the region of the circle of Willis. c-fos protein-like immunoreactivity was present at 1 h, peaked at 2 h and decreased by 8 h. At 2 h, immunoreactivi…

Prenatal magnetic resonance imaging diagnosis of molar tooth sign at 17 to 18 weeks of gestation in two fetuses at risk for Joubert syndrome and related cerebellar disorders.

We report on the prenatal MRI diagnosis of Joubert syndrome and related cerebellar disorders (JSRD) in 2 unrelated fetuses at 17-18 weeks of gestation who were referred to us with history of siblings with JSRD and additional renal affection in the second case. Ultrasonography (US) showed non-specific cranial findings in both fetuses such as prominent cisterna magna and ventricular system as well as bilateral renal enlargement in the first case. MRI identified the molar tooth sign (MTS) and suggested a JSRD affection in both fetuses. The final suggested diagnosis for both cases was Joubert synd…

[Ruptured aneurysm of distal posterior inferior cerebellar artery located at caudal loop].

We report an unusual case of subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) due to ruptured aneurysm originating at the caudal loop of posterior inferior cerebellar artery (PICA). The patient was a 77-year-old female presented with a sudden onset of headache and vomiting. Initial CT scan demonstrated a SAH with thick hematoma mainly in the cisterna magna. Vertebral angiogram revealed a saccular aneurysm arising from the tonsillomedullary segment of the left PICA, and communicating artery with supplying a territory of contralateral vermis as an anastmotic vessel. At surgery, no vessel branches were confirmed in…

Polymicrogyria and deletion 22q11.2 syndrome: window to the etiology of a common cortical malformation.

Several brain malformations have been described in rare patients with the deletion 22q11.2 syndrome (DEL22q11) including agenesis of the cor … elopment rather than a primary brain malformation. We also noted mild cerebellar hypoplasia or mega-cisterna magna in 8 of 24 patients. Although this was not the focus of the present study, mild cerebellar anomalies are probably the most common brain malformation associated with DEL22q11.

A craniocervical injury-induced syringomyelia caused by central canal dilation secondary to acquired tonsillar herniation. Case report.

The authors report on a 19-year-old man with an acquired tonsillar herniation caused by a craniocervical junction injury in which serial magnetic resonance (MR) images demonstrated patent and isolated segments of the central canal participating in the dilation and then formation of a cervical syrinx. The patient was involved in a motor vehicle accident; he developed tonsillar herniation as a complication of subarachnoid and epidural hemorrhage, predominantly observed around the cisterna magna and upper cervical canal. Repeated MR images obtained over an 11-month period indicated the for mation…

MRI for the assessment of the malformed fetus.

Ultrafast MRI sequences have changed the use of MRI for evaluating fetal abnormalities. Currently, the best application is the demonstration of normal fetal brain development and the further definition of suspected brain abnormalities found on ultrasound. MRI differentiates well the various types of fetal ventriculomegaly. Superior posterior fossa visualization allows differentiation of Dandy Walker malformation from a large cisterna magna. Anomalies of the corpus callosum and some disorders of neuronal migration can be seen. MRI is also valuable in the evaluation of fetal giant neck masses fo…

Vasospasm due to massive subarachnoid haemorrhage--a rat model.

Although the pathophysiology of chronic cerebral vasospasm following subarachnoid haemorrhage (SAH) is still unclear, it is certain that the amount of subarachnoid blood is predictive of the severity of cerebral vasospasm. Accordingly, massive subarachnoid haemorrhage (greater than 0.5 ml) was induced in adult rats via direct injection into the cisterna magna. Compared to other previously published models of experimental SAH in rats a much larger amount of blood was injected. The basilar artery was exposed 72 hours post subarachnoid haemorrhage and photographed under controlled conditions. The…

Changes of neuropeptide immunoreactivity in cerebrovascular nerve fibers after experimentally produced SAH. Immunohistochemical study in the dog.

The immunoreactivity of vasoactive intestinal polypeptide (VIP)-, substance P (SP)-, and neuropeptide Y (NPY)-containing nerve fibers in the basilar artery (BA) and proximal portion of the middle cerebral artery (M1) was immunohistochemically examined in the dog after experimentally produced subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH). The SAH was produced by a single injection of fresh autologous arterial blood (1 ml/kg body weight) into the cisterna magna. The density (the averaged number of nerve fibers in a unit area) of VIP-, SP-, and NPY-immunoreactive perivascular nerve fibers in the M1 segment and t…

Barrier disruption in the major cerebral arteries during the acute stage after experimental subarachnoid hemorrhage.

The effects of experimental subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) on the blood-arterial wall barrier in the basilar arteries were studied during the acute stage after SAH. SAH was induced in rats by injecting fresh autologous blood into the cisterna magna. Horseradish peroxidase (HRP) was given intravenously before killing the animals to assess the integrity of the barrier. In the basilar arteries taken from the animals that were killed 30 minutes after the cisternal injection of either mock cerebrospinal fluid or arterial blood, HRP reaction products were diffusely observed in the subendothelial spac…

Positive contrast ventriculography in cats with experimental obstructive hydrocephalus.

Cerebrospinal fluid pathways were studied in both normal and experimental obstructed hydrocephalic cats by positive contrast ventriculography. Either water soluble or insoluble contrast material was injected into the lateral cerebral ventricles, and radiographs were taken of the head and spinal cord. In the normal cat, the contrast material freely flowed throughout the spinal fluid spaces. The contrast material accumulated in the cisterna magna, and from there extended into the cranial and spinal subarachnoid spaces. In the kaolin-induced hydrocephalic cat, the outlets from the fourth ventricl…

[Some characteristic features of RI-cisternography in infancy and childhood (author's transl)].

There are few reports which discussed normal RI-cisternography in infancy and childhood. The cisternograms of the children between 2 months and 13 year-old were classified under a criteria into three groups; 17 normal cases, 135 borderline cases and 77 abnormal cases. The former two groups were compared with each other and characteristic findings of RI-cisternography in infants and children were appreciated clinically. And we attempted to establish normal RI-cisternography. The characteristic findings are: 1) When the images of cisterna magna is dilated, it can not be concluded directly that t…
